About This Pipe

This bent Bulldog was made by Francis A. "Fran" Rose, an artisan who worked for the original Tinder Box in California, making pipes for them that were likely much like this piece. With a nearly full bend to its shank and stem, the posture of this pipe is quite striking, especially given its muscular bowl and trim, though still thick, shank. The waist on the bowl is quite high-set, placing the ridgeline which wraps around it nearly at the top of the transition. Though the band it wears around its shank end was applied after being made, it fits the composition well, and its textured surface contrasts handsomely with the smooth shank.
