Peter Stokkebye - PS35 Champagne
Tadpole Sips Champagne and Only Gets the Bubbles
Alright, Tobacco Tadpole here with my thoughts on Peter Stokkebye’s PS35 Champagne. My first bowl in a Rossi briar was actually pretty nice — lots of berry flavor running through the whole smoke, some citrus notes, and a pleasant rooty sweetness. I even got a key lime pie vibe at times. It was definitely flavorful. But then I tried it in a Churchwarden and it fell apart — lost most of its character. That pretty much sums up how I feel about the blend overall. It’s trying to be this fancy champagne aromatic, but it doesn’t quite pull it off. Would I smoke it again? Sure, I’ve already got it. Will I buy it again? Probably not. Two pipes out of five.
Lane Limited - 1-Q
Tadpole Discovers the Magic Smell
Alright, the Tobacco Tadpole here, fresh off trying Sutliff’s Vanilla Custard. I’ll be honest — flavor-wise, 1Q doesn’t quite stack up to that custardy goodness. The Virginia underneath is solid but pretty average compared to Cornell & Diehl’s Opening Night. It’s a classic, traditional smoke… just a little one-note. But holy smokes, that room note? It’s straight-up magical. It smells exactly like the warm, comforting pipe tobacco I remember from childhood. It’s the kind of scent that makes people actually happy you’re smoking. I can’t wait to light this up around the family and watch their faces light up. So while the flavor gets a respectable “meh, it’s fine,” the room note gets a standing ovation. If you want your house to smell like everyone’s favorite grandpa, this is your tobacco. Three and a half pipes for the room note alone.
Sutliff - Z92 Vanilla Custard
Corncob Converts the Tadpole
Alright, your favorite Tobacco Tadpole here, finally brave enough to try an aromatic. I approached Sutliff’s Z92 Vanilla Custard with the same caution I’d give a sketchy alley — I’d read the horror stories about tongue bite and chemical flavors. First bowl in my fancy Savinelli briar? Meh. Kept going out, flavor was playing hide and seek. I was ready to write aromatics off completely. Then I switched to a narrow corncob pipe, dried the tobacco for forty minutes, and just toasted it instead of blasting it with flame. Game changer. Suddenly I’m getting thick, custardy clouds with real vanilla flavor, that silky oily mouthfeel that coats your tongue, and a pleasant lingering sweetness. The tin note is basically dessert in a can, but the actual smoke is surprisingly mild and enjoyable. For my first aromatic experience, Z92 knocked it out of the park. Even this tadpole approves. Four pipes out of five. The corncob gets all the credit.
Cornell & Diehl - Haunted Bookshop 2oz
The Tadpole’s First Haunt
Alright, fellow bookworms and pipe puffers, your friendly Tobacco Tadpole here finally met Cornell & Diehl’s Haunted Bookshop — my very first burley. I picked it because the tin art looked cool, the name screamed Christopher Morley’s classic novel, and I figured why not haunt a bookstore? This blend’s got real character, like an old bookshop ghost that’s been around for decades. It’s bold, round, and rich with that deep burley nuttiness, a solid nicotine punch, and just enough Perique to keep things interesting. It feels like it’s got roots — no kitschy new kid on the block, this one’s paying proper homage to the traditionalists. As Roger Mifflin would say, this shop is haunted by the ghosts of all great literature… and now my evenings are haunted by this blend. Perfect after-dinner smoke when you want something with substance. This one’s officially my barometer for all future burley adventures. I’m in a full-blown love affair with the genre already. Five out of five pipes. The tadpole has found his evening haunt.
Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning 2oz
From Skunk to Hooked in Three Days
Alright folks, as the self-proclaimed Tobacco Tadpole, I dove into Cornell & Diehl’s Bayou Morning completely blind. I’d seen all the online hype about VaPers, so naturally I expected fireworks. Instead, I got smacked in the face with an earthy, skunky aroma that made me wonder if my pipe had died in there overnight. I almost gave up on it right there. But I jarred it up, gave it a few days, and holy cow — it completely transformed. That weird funk mellowed into this wonderful, mellow Virginia with the Perique punching through just enough to give you that tangy, peppery, slightly sour kick. Now I’m having at least one bowl of this stuff every single day. It’s officially become my benchmark for any other VaPer I try. Straightforward, smooth, and just funky enough to keep things interesting. Four and a half pipes out of five. Sorry, but the tadpole is officially hooked.
Cornell & Diehl - Opening Night 2oz
From Harsh to Heavenly in a Week
Listen, I’m a brand new pipe smoker, so when I cracked my first tin of Cornell & Diehl’s Opening Night, I expected it to either taste like victory or instant regret. My very first smoke was actually a little harsh — I thought I’d already screwed up the hobby. But I let the tin sit for a week, and man, what a difference. It mellowed out and turned into this sweet, smooth Virginia flake that’s nicer than my grandma’s compliments. The stuff burns clean, hits you with that hay-and-bread vibe, and has just enough tang to remind you it’s real tobacco, not some fruit salad. Even us tadpoles can get through a bowl without looking like total amateurs. Veterans, if you’re tired of your usual Virginia trying to murder you halfway through, give this one a spin. Would absolutely let it open another night… and probably several after that. Solid four pipes out of five.
