Captain Black - Cherry 7oz
My first ever aromatic.. I am impressed.
Alright, so I am quite new to pipe smoking, but not at all new to smoking good tobaccos in cigar form on and off. As per recommended by friends and other pipe smokers much wiser than me, I did not go with an aromatic blend as my first tobacco. I heavily enjoy sweet Virginias and just about anything with warm, crisp fruity notes. Still do! But being in Georgia with the current heat wave on top of living near a water source with O+ blood type.. I needed something with a great indoor note, haha! If I rolled back time to my first night firing up a pipe, I would not have been thrown off or disappointed! Now, I don't think I'd recommend *any* aromatics to folks freshly new in the pipe smoking world for use in their first bowls. But if you did choose this to be your first, it will definitely grow on you. When I first opened this one, I was mentally taken aback like "WHOA that is strong cherry", but every time I've opened it since it's getting harder and harder to not want to eat it.. lol. I did not originally buy CB Cherry from SmokingPipes.com and while mine is certainly not old, it is not fully fresh either. I assume it was sitting on a shelf for quite awhile before I bought it, so the dry-to-moisture ratio is perfect for me. I'm not one to write reviews let alone put myself publicly on the internet in any way, but I've enjoyed this blend so much for indoor use in my study that I didn't want to be quiet on it. The flavor is not nearly as strong as what it smells like when you first initially open it, the cherry flavor at least to me is a couple notches above mild and somewhere in the realm between medium and mild, but more prominent at the start of the bowl. It gets more full bodied the further down the bowl you smoke, and moves into a warm "full body" type of flavor, while still retaining decent notes of the initial cherry. Very very mild smokey boldness once you get about halfway, which I really enjoy. And it makes wonders to smoke indoors on a hot humid night with a good book! I don't drink hard alcohol so I can't speak for what spirits would go even better with this blend. Again, this is my personal flavor palette and how I pick these notes up in the taste. But the room notes, are just.. wow. It's not a strong smell, just a nice light sweet bold scent that pairs well with the late hours of the evening! I hope this review helps someone who's on the fence about Captain Black Cherry, or aromatics in general. Just be wise in your choice of tobacco blend if it's the first one you have bought or plan to buy, for choice of family of your first blend can make or break the first time experience. ^_^ I won't be buying more *just yet* as I still have a lot in my 8oz tin, but I am officially sold on aromatics after trying this and have been given a much deeper appreciation for them!
