All Pipes Considered: Grechukhin Pipes
Ted and Chip discuss Grechukhin pipes
In this All Pipes Considered video, Ted and Chip discuss Vladimir Grechukhin, focusing on his work as functional pieces of art.
Vladimir Grechukin first started making pipes in the 1970s, when he was just 18 years old. Having worked with wood and other mediums since adolescence, it was a natural step into pipe making, and a well-guided one too. You see, it was at this time that Grechukhin began studying under Alexei Borisovitch Fyodorov, who many consider to have been the master pipemaker in Russia during this period. Under Fyodorov's guidance, Grechukhin learned quickly, obtaining a firm grasp on design principles and execution with briar and ebonite. Over the years he experimented and perfected his technique, earning an esteemed reputation for his work, first in his home country and later abroad.
Fast forward to 2017: Vladimir is now one of the most prominent and skilled pipemakers in the field. His style is honed and sharpened, his execution of design flawless. He's even spearheaded entire aesthetic movements and strengthened the pipe making community through his PS Studio workshop, collaborations with Hiroyuki Tokutomi and Jeff Gracik of J. Alan Pipes among others, and his own private line as well. He is, in every sense, a master artisan.
Whether you're drawn to his complex, striking shaping style, deft use of accents, gorgeous finishes, or expert stemwork, it's easy to see why pipe enthusiasts all over the globe have come to collect Grechukhin's work. If you'd like to start your own collection of Grechukhin pipes, you can find some of the artisan's work both as new and estate pipes. There's plenty of styles, shapes, and finishes to choose from.
