Back in that Summer State of Mind

It has been a cold winter here at the beach this year. Sure, some other places have been way colder (sorry New Englanders), but I have had just about enough of those inevitable winter time blues. The other day, I decided that I needed something that was going to put me back in a summer-like mindset and maybe, just maybe, make me feel a bit warmer.
With images of white, sandy beaches, bright days, and gentle summer nights running through my head, I wandered down to the warehouse, and decided to grab me a few bowls of Sunset Rum by Sutliff. After all, nothing screams summertime evenings like sun and some rum!
The moment I opened the bag I was in LOVE. The rum gave it a nice undertone, along with a sweet combination of vanilla and caramel notes, but there was also something citrusy or tropical there as well. The cut ribbons were very dark and a little moist, so I let it sit out for a minute or so to get ready for my pipe. I grabbed my Ropp Billiard, packed a bowl, and BAM, I was hooked.
It was a very cool smoke, with very little bite, and the room note was out of this world. The aroma was just enough to be pleasant without being overpowering, offering hints of vanilla, caramel, and rum on top of citrusy Virginias, nutty Burley, and sweet black Cavendish. I was surprised to find a lot of those same flavors present in the smoke itself, the tobaccos coming through just fine with a great taste of vanilla and tropical fruit on top.
Something about that combination of aroma and taste really caught my attention. As I savored each and every puff, it did seem to put me back in that summer state of mind. Overall, this is a tobacco I would definitely keep around in my rotation permanently, no matter the season.
Winter blues getting you down? Try a bowl of Sunset Rum and think warm thoughts, folks. Summer will eventually arrive, and probably before you even know it.
