Erinmore Flake: Tasting Notes
I decided to revisit this classic Irish-style flake after many years. Since it had been so long, I didn't know quite what to expect. Popping the tin for the first time unleashed an "in-your-face" fruity aroma and very dark, neatly-stacked flakes.
The complex tin aroma might deter some smokers, but I'd encourage anyone who has dismissed this unique flake to give it a little drying time before loading up. You'll be rewarded with a refreshing mixture of spicy tobacco, licorice, creamy coconut sweetness, and tropical fruit flavors. The topping plays well with the mature-tasting base tobaccos and seems to recede further into the background as the bowl progresses. Erinmore will definitely make my rotation, and I can't think of any other blend quite like it.

I have smoked this off and on for over 35 years. I have never found anything like it. It is truly unique. The aroma really hits you as you peel off flakes that look like dark bacon. Wonderful stuff.
For the VA purest, don't let the "juicy fruit" reference deter you. The tin note is quite pronounced, but the smoke itself is a good mature VA. The flavors, as Shane mentioned, just come in and out. For me and my palate, it's slightly tangy, slightly fruity (in a good way) and sweet. I've personally never picked up on the "soapiness" or "licorice" like flavors. But, each palate is different. It's not strong, but it's not light either. A solid medium smoke in my book, can smoke all day, but it's also quite satisfying. The bit of burley in it gives enough Vit N to keep you happy.
Burns nice all the way down, resists over-heating and leaves a charming after-taste. An added plus - it has one of the best room notes of any flake out there. Personally I highly recommend opening the tin, and then letting it rest for a few days, or a week before smoking.
It also ages beautifully. I always keep this around. A perennial favorite. Side note - it does tend to leave a very subtle ghost. In pipes devoted to VA's this isn't a problem.
