A Gold Star for Doblone d'Oro

Savinelli Doblone D'Oro Pipe Tobacco at Smokingpipes.com

When the Savinelli blends first came out a few months ago, we, of course, all lined up to try them (including those who had been testing out the various prototypes long beforehand). Somehow, though, I never got the opportunity to try Doblone D'Oro. How this happened, I have no idea, as I'm usually the first, or at least one of the first, to snatch up a tin of something new. Well, with our new Savinelli promo currently in full swing, I thought it was about high time to try it. I've had my eye on a Savinelli Tandem for a while now, so I picked one up, purchased it, and received my free tin of Doblone.

Upon opening the tin, I found the note to be rich and earthy, with subtle tones of molasses and something slightly sweet that reminds me of tonquin bean. The coins are dark, with just a few lighter Virginias seemingly scattered about. The moisture level was perfect for my tastes, with very little drying time needed, and preparation was quite easy — breaking apart with very little effort into a nice fluffy ribbon.

Initial light greeted me with a smooth, full-bodied smoke with that same robust earthiness of the tin-note coming to the surface, along with a bit of nuttiness as well. A few puffs in, the grassy Virginias began to shine through, with a subtle citrusy sweetness rounding up the background. The Kenyan dark-fired leaf is quite similar to Kentucky variations, I think, just with perhaps a more earthy, root-like flavor and even more body. That being said, what makes this blend for me, though, is unquestionably the Perique. The dark-fired, Burley, and Virginias all set up a nice backdrop for the spicy leaf — allowing you to pick up on both the sweet, raisiny qualities and peppery spiciness all at once.

Overall, the flavor remained consistent all the way through. The aroma was pleasant, slightly perfumed with a musky richness. There was very little bite, and the smoothness was really nice. Strength-wise, it was slightly above medium, with the Burley and dark-fired not failing to deliver both in body and Vitamin N. If I had to compare it to another blend, it would likely be an older rendition of Three Nuns both in flavor and smoothness. Though as far as spiciness goes, I was reminded of Riverboat Gambler minus the Turkish.

It paired quite nicely with a black dark-roasted coffee, as the rich bitterness of the beverage complemented the robust flavor of the mixture perfectly. I've smoked four bowls of this stuff since yesterday, all in different pipes, and each time I found something new: curry, molasses, fruit, pepper, etc. Will I smoke some more of it? Yes, most definitely. Simply put, it's a rich, flavorful blend you could just smoke all day. And I intend to.

I agree... have purchased four rolls for smoking and aging. This is probably the number one tobacco in my rotation & I also thought it was similar to the older Bell's Three Nuns which was also one of my favorites... loved it & love these "Gold Coins" just as much. I think it will age beautifully. I can't describe what's in a blend as far as flavoring or in some cases types of tobacco. I'm one of those who either like it or don't like it and can't say why this tantalized my taste buds. Great stuff that I hope remains on the market.
