5 Pipe Accessories For Your Everyday Carry

I don't know about you, but I consider my pipe to be an extension of myself. Like any fashion the shape and finish of a pipe become a statement about who I am, or at least who I consider myself to be, and most definitely whom I wish to be seen as. As a seemingly brash, jovial, outgoing personality, I contrast with smaller, elegant, understated pipes. Or maybe that's just a window into the shy, socially awkward individual I know myself to really be.

Just as important are accessories. After all, if your pipe says something about who you are, surely what you keep it in and what you light it with are just as telling. Much like the Armani wearing salesman would look out of place in a rusted out Fiat, you don't want to be carrying your pipe and some Ziplocs full of tobacco in a Crown Royal bag.

What's an Everyday Carry?

Used to describe the items found in one pockets or bag on any given day, the "Everyday Carry", "EDC" or "Pocket Dump" is, at its heart, a prompt. Much like setting a topic for a writing competition, a prompt sets a common theme or language between users on platforms like Instagram and Tumblr, especially between and within communities that don't necessarily interact often. I run a pipe blog on Tumblr, for example, but if I see the "Everyday Carry" of a photographer, I still grasp the concept, even though our subjects will be vastly different. There can also be practical benefits for breaking down what goes in your pockets every day, so to that end I'll go into said benefits of each item as well.

Here are a few accessories we've selected to help you, and your Everyday Carry, stand out.

Pipe Cleaner Holders

I've stressed the importance of never being without pipe cleaners before, but where to keep them? If I'm carrying a combo pouch I might fold a few in half and throw them in the accessories pocket, but if I'm leaving town, or just want some cleaners in my soft briefcase for work, etc, I need a more elegant solution than carrying them loose in a spare compartment. On these occasions a Claudio Albieri cleaner holder is just the ticket, as its low profile means I can chuck it in my suitcase or in the document holder of my bag, without the risk of bending cleaners or having them strewn throughout your luggage.

Tobacco Pouches

If you have a combo pouch, you've probably lamented over the fact that no matter how many pipes it'll carry, there's only ever the one pouch for tobacco, meaning that you're stuck with multiple pipes but only the one tobacco to smoke in them. A separate tobacco pouch gives you the ability to carry one more blend with you, and, if you're anything like me, you'll be carrying a combo pouch and a tobacco pouch or two. When you're heading out for the night and don't want to deal with a bulky rollup or combo pouch, a tobacco pouch in the trouser pocket will be the perfect companion to a pipe in the breast pocket.

While they're not pouches, these English tobacco boxes have proven popular around the office, store plenty of tobacco, and will keep tobacco fresh for a day or two. We've even taken to giving the inside a coating of carnauba wax to keep things fresh for a few extra days.

English Tobacco Boxes — 6 Styles — $39.95

Lighters

You won't be smoking anything out of that fancy pipe without some form of flame. And what better than the perrenially stylish pipe lighter, especially an Old Boy or one of our more budget minded, but still ever-so-dapper Kiribis.

Kiribi Mikazuki Short Black Matte — $72.00

Kiribi Kabuto Shiroi (White) — $88.00

Tampers

Another essential, but one often overlooked when considering accesorising, the ever faithful tamper comes in more options than the utilitarian pipe nail or Czech tool. Try these leather bound, double ended 8deco tampers for something that offers more style and more function, especially with the ventilated foot that allows the air to pass through while tamping, giving you an extra edge in that long smoking contest.

8deco Leather Double Ended Tamper — 2 Colors — $18.00

Pipe Rolls

For those who either carry pipes with them every day, or just need a more elegant solution for traveling, the leather roll up offers a compact way of carrying multiple pipes, without the need to carry multiple combo pouches, or even dedicate a whole carry-on allotment to a larger pipe bag.

Claudio Albieri Italian Leather Roll Up — 3 Colors — $325.00

Savinelli Roll-up Pipe Pouch — 3 Colors — $100.00

I have the ability to make one of a kind pipe tamps. The last one I made was from red cedar. I you are interested in having some made to your specifications contact me. I am sure they will be at a fair price.

Tamper from California Ironwood. Easiest shape for you to make or octagon shape.

What's missing in your EDC, and even more important now than they were 20 years ago, is the pipe cap. Not a wind cap, but a flexible, non-toxic, and heat-resistant rubber cap to put over a partially smoked pipe, or even a loaded pipe to keep the tobacco in place for later. Since it is so extremely rare to be able to keep the pipe going when one goes inside somewhere these caps were marvellous. These were made by a German company who also supplied a car pipe rest. Sadly my last one wore out almost 15 years ago and I have felt "naked" pipe smoling out and about ever since (and my pockets keep filling with ash). I have searched for years but they are just not available anymore. No EDC can be properly complete without one!

    Greetings,

I travel around with the original tins of tobaccos, few blends that I would like to smoke. I'm not a fan of tobacco pouches, because I've few blends to smoke and only smoke 1-2 bowls a day, and I'm afraid it will effect the flavours if kept too long in the pouch. I'm not sure is it wrong to travel with tins of tobaccos. Anyone can please tell me or guide me?

Tony, you just keep on traveling with those tins. It's my favorite way to get tobacco around.

I 've always enjoyed Lane products. Looking forward to trying the new COPPER but can't find it in my area.

I'm not exactly sure what constitutes a "Scottish" Blend. Could be a new experience.

Essentials for my Crown Royal bag: ziplocks of tobacco each with a coin-sized humidor (of course), 8 penny galvanized nail tamper, Bic lighter (flame set as high as possible), and my Castello Collection bent Dublin in its chamois pouch.

It reminds me to dig deeper and look harder for quality ... everywhere
