Pipe Posters 2015

Each year, at about this time, Smokingpipes.com creates a poster. This is something we all look forward to, as it's featured not only on our website, but as an insert in Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine, and, of course, on the walls of our offices. I've had my hand in helping with the poster in years past, and, of course, there were many impressive designs before that, but to me, the poster this year is quite special.

Front Side

Smoking Pipes Poster at Smokingpipes.com I love the first side of the poster for a number of reasons. First of all, the artist, Alisha Mann, also happens to be my older sister. Where most people see the work of creative talent, I have memories of a determined seven-year-old, whose idea of a good home-video was an art show à là Bob Ross. Of course, by this point, it's no surprise that she is as great as she wanted to be; she graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from Winthrop, currently showcases her work in a studio in Bend, Oregon, and is the Art Director and an Instructor at an educational center for children in the same town. With this work of art, however, our worlds (hers and mine) collide.

Affectionately called "Pipe Man," the work is a mixed-media composition which features a mechanical contraption typical of Alisha's colorful creations; essentially, it is a brain-powered pipe lighter. An artful kind of Rube Goldberg machine, the original painting was a gift which is proudly displayed in my living room, but at one point it hung here at the office, where Pipe Man made many friends. To my delight, this dapper guy, who is always ready for a good smoke, is about to befriend many, many more.

Back Side

Smoking Pipes Poster at Smokingpipes.comOn the second side of the 2015 poster, highly contrasted in black and white, is a collage of famous pipe smokers. I think it does a great job of showcasing how diverse a group of pipe smokers can be. From actors, writers, musicians, politicians, scientists, and more, the faces on this poster are not only recognizable, but are known for greatness. What you may not realize about this design is that it was also painstakingly painted on the walls of our new office when we moved. The mural, which Kelly was kind enough to help paint and document, not only spans multiple walls in the SPC marketing and merchandizing areas, but was also used as a theme to incorporate in rooms throughout the building as well. Furthermore, now that the poster is printed, it is amazing to know it will be present in even more rooms, for pipe smokers near and far to enjoy.

So, if you're a subscriber to Pipes & Tobacco Magazine, you've already got one of these coming your way, but if you're not, and you'd like to see one of these gems on your wall, you can find them HERE Better yet, at $3.99, why not get two to display both sides? Cheers.
