A Pipe-Smoker's Guide to Everyday Carry (EDC)

Today we're going to be talking about pipe smoking EDC, or everyday carry. EDC is a theme across numerous industries, but it's especially applicable to pipe smoking for those of us who like to smoke a pipe every day; We need a setup that allows us to do that as easily as possible. These are my essential tips for EDC, and I hope they are helpful for curating your own setup.

Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Gather Your Essentials

It is important to consider items for everyday carry that are reasonably priced but also durable and able to hold up to everyday use. Veteran pipe smokers: many of you probably have your own setups already, but for the newbie pipe smoker, the novice, it can be a little intimidating. So what do you need for EDC?

When it comes to having an EDC kit for pipe smoking, there are numerous ways you can gather your essentials. There's really no right or wrong answer. Personally, you're going to want the typical pipe-smoking tools: A lighter, a tamper, pipe cleaners, and some sort of case to hold it all.

Pipe Cases

The good news is, when it comes to pipe cases, there are a lot of products that are entirely all-in-one in design. For example, I have a Brigham One-Pipe case here, which is perfect for everyday carry. If you're just carrying it every day, rather than a case for a trip, you don't need something that carries multiple pipes, unless you're planning on smoking more than one pipe in a day.

There are a ton of other options out there but what I really like about this one is it's got your zippered slot here for the pipe and an accessories pocket for pipe cleaners, a tamper, and a lighter. Also, the real benefit of any bag like this is an integrated tobacco pouch, which means you're taking one more thing off your plate that you have to remember to grab because it's already taken care of within the bag itself.

This one's lined with surgical, food-grade, flavor-neutral rubber, which isn't going to keep your tobacco hydrated indefinitely, as it's not a cellaring technique, but for daily use, it works well.

Lighters

For lighters, there are a ton of great options at an affordable price. This IMCO butane lighter runs about $20-$25 on-site. You've also got Zippo lighters at a great value. I will say I personally prefer butane lighters just because you don't have to refill them as often with lighter fluid. Some people also say there's some flavor imparted from the lighter fluid, but your mileage may vary and that's for each person to determine for themselves. The IMCO lighter is durable and not very expensive.

Be Careful with EDC Selections

In general, for everyday carry, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that you don't always want to be carrying around your choice lighter, prized pipes, or your limited-edition tamper, as it can be susceptible to damage or loss.

It is beneficial to always consider if you're willing to misplace the items in your EDC kit, or scratch them up? This IMCO lighter is a great example because it's not going to break the bank if something happens to it while you're out.

It's also got a handy little tamper. I always recommend having an extra one at the very least, specifically one with a pick inside because if you're smoking in your car or you're on a walk, it's really handy to have to be able to get the ash out when you're done, especially if you're not at home and have you accouterments set up there.

I also have an 8deco tamper here. These run anywhere from $5-$15, so again, we're talking about a really good value. This one specifically has a vented foot, which is convenient. It's also got this threaded pick, which is great when you're done with the bowl.

Last Tips: Accessories and Pipe Selections

I suggest getting one or a few wind screens/caps. They're as cheap as they come. I think they're $1-2 for a two-pack. They're super convenient when you're on the go, not only for protecting against wind if you're smoking outside but while you're out and about but also to keep tobacco contained.

When I take my pipe out, I'll actually pack the pipe beforehand because where I'm going might not be the best setup to rub out a flake or something like that. I'll pack the pipe beforehand and use this as a sort of cap to keep the tobacco from falling out when I put it in my pouch. That's a little handy tip and they fit almost any chamber. They're spring-loaded, if you will, and will expand to fit whatever pipe you're using them on.

When it comes to choosing the pipe for your EDC kit, obviously that's personal preference, but I would recommend something the size of a Peterson Junior. It's lightweight, doesn't take up much space, and is convenient. Think of pipes that you can easily slip in a pocket if you need to and pipes you can clench while you're walking.

I also love choosing a pipe with a rusticated finish because it's going to hide any handling marks you might pick up along the way. It's important to note, with EDC stuff, that you're going to have to just accept the fact that stuff's going to get a little bit beat up. That's the whole point, and that's also the fun. It shows character and how much you enjoy using these various items.

I'll end with a reminder to not forget your pipe cleaners. Always keep them in the pocket of whatever travel bag you're using.

There you have it! Help newcomers out by responding in the comments with your own EDC tips. It's always good to hear what other pipe smokers are using and what some of your personal favorite EDC things to carry are on a daily basis.

Packing the pipe beforehand and capping it! Didn“t think of this before. That was actually great advice!

I usually forego a tamper and keep a Czech tool on hand. More versatile, lighter, and very cheap.

Excellent video! Makes me want to step up my EDC game for sure. And the windscreen/pipe cap for a prefilled pipe... genius idea.

I bought an inexpensive cloth and vinyl zippered lunch box. It even has a net inside to hold things in place. The seal is good to keep orders from escaping. If I only need on pipe, easy. If I want a three day set to travel, not a problem. I'll still have plenty of room for tobacco, lighters, cleaners, etc.

For pre-packed pipes I've been using Save a Bowls. It's a silicone, heat resistant, bowl cover that keeps the tobacco in the bowl until ready to light. Also works to snuff out a lit bowl if you're interrupted. Obviously they're made for a different kind of pipe, but I've found them useful for most common shapes and size briars.
