Note: The following transcription has been edited for clarity and brevity.
[Shane Ireland]: Alan and I are excited to be smoking the newest cigars from Lost & Found: Late to the Party, Out of Towners, and Don't Sit on the Furniture. It's a cornucopia of different flavors and components between all three of these highly limited releases.
[Alan Britt]: This feels like a throwback to older Lost & Found releases. As a Lost & Found and Caldwell fanboy, admittedly, that's kind of playing to the nostalgic cigar smell. There are whimsical, cartoony vibes in the artwork, which I really love, and I'm super excited to smoke these blends made by Henderson Ventura.
[SI]: I think it's worth noting that all of these were in development basically just before the Caldwell merger with Laudisi Enterprises. So this is the stuff that Robert was working on with Henderson right before all of that went down. And we're finally able to offer it to everybody.
Late to the Party
[SI]: Late to the Party is the strongest, fullest, and spiciest of the three. There are only 1800 cigars produced in total for this blend, and that's for nationwide release. This one is 5.75" by 52. It's right in that sweet spot for the Toro smokers. Right off the bat, the spice is evident and I was not surprised to find out that this does include some tobacco from Condega and Nicaragua.
The wrapper is Habano Oscuro, with a San Andrés binder, which adds a really interesting element to the cigar, and the fillers are mixed between Corojo, Condega, and Broadleaf. There's lots of spice, complexity, and richness. It's on the stronger side of cigars blended by Robert, as far as I've tried over the years.
[AB]: Yeah, it's definitely not atypical of modern Lost & Found to have something a little stronger, with a little more kick.
[SI]: The influence from Mina del Rey and from Henderson is evident the most in Late to the Party.
[AB]: Henderson's been bringing Robert to the dark side.
[SI]: Yeah, this is awesome. It's pretty early on in the smoke, but I am getting a little bit of a dark chocolate vibe as well. I love the earthiness and the spice that you get from Broadleaf and Condega. The way that they're playing off each other is really interesting. I can't really think of anything else on the market that's quite like it.
[AB]: It's definitely unique, and that's one thing I love about Henderson's profiles in general. He comes up with these playful blends that aren't really anything you can get elsewhere. That's a really special thing in this day and age when there are a million brands and factories.
[SI]: To still find something unique takes a lot of blending prowess and expertise. I think these guys came up with a winner here.
Out of Towners
[AB]: I am smoking Out of Towners, which features our very own Sykes Wilford on the band, which we're excited about. It's a 5" x 50, and a super delicious cigar. It's what I think of when I think of Caldwell's palette.
We're looking at an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Sumatran binder, some Dominican Corona and Piloto fillers, as well as some Nicaraguan. There's spice coming in from the Ecuadorian Habano, as well as the Nicaraguan. And if you are a fan of Henderson's or Robert's work, I think you'll love this. Only 2000 of these cigars were made.
[SI]: That is technically the most mild of the three releases but what I liked about that one is that it has the most classic flavor profile that Robert loves. Considering that he made that in collaboration with Henderson, I feel like it's both of them channeling William's palette. The maestro himself. It's something that I think Henderson's dad would be proud of both of them having come up with together because it has that vibe. It's just so refined.
Don't Sit on the Furniture
[SI]: Lastly, we have Don't Sit on the Furniture. A 6" x 54, this cigar is billed as the medium, medium to full of the three releases, and only 2000 were made of this blend. This one has one of the most unique components out of not just these three cigars but on the market in general.
[AB]: Yeah, it features a Habano Aromatico binder, which we've seen in a couple of other Caldwell releases sparingly, but it adds, as soon as we lit these cigars up, a floral note in the air that's kind of unmistakable as something different.
[SI]: Absolutely. In the side stream, it's extremely aromatic, evoking the aroma of cooking spices, and definitely floral as well. There's a crazy flavor that I'm trying to put my finger on here.
[AB]: Yeah, I'm getting some kind of cocoa, but there's just something else in there.
[SI]: I was going to say mole. It's kind of sweet, kind of spicy, and really rich.
[AB]: I think that's spot on.
[SI]: The way that my tastes have been leaning these days, I think this is the most unique and complex flavor-wise of these three blends.
[AB]: I think you're right. It also features a San Andrés wrapper, Pennsylvania Broadleaf fillers, as well as Corojo and Habano fillers. But it is not at all what I think of as a typical San Andrés cigar.
[SI]: Not at all. It's got a similar body and complexity, but I would say it tastes like an aged San Andrés cigar. It's got a mature vibe to it. It's really a well-balanced cigar. All of the components individually offer the best of themselves without muddying each other.
[AB]: It's very umami. There's just the right amount of sweetness and spice. I didn't go into it thinking I would really like it much because I prefer milder cigars, but this is my favorite out of the bunch.
[SI]: All of the food flavors are coming to me, man. This is such a rich and savory experience. I said mole and I stand behind that, but the more that I get into it, the umami is coming through. It tastes like miso broth, miso ramen, or something like that. It's got some really interesting vegetal notes.
[AB]: I'm getting bay leaves, which kind of ties into the whole mole deal.
[SI]: Yeah, bay leaf is on point. Especially when it comes to aromatic herbs, that's not something I can ever recall picking out in a tobacco before, but the Habano Aromatico is one of the most interesting components. I actually was fortunate enough in the Dominican earlier this year to be able to taste it on its own. It's a crazy tobacco.
[AB]: This is 100 percent a winner. I'm speechless.
[SI]: Considering how limited all of these runs are, I think they're likely to go down in Lost and Found fandom as being super strong releases. If you want something complex and unique, start with Don't Sit on the Furniture.
Three bangers dropped all at once. Definitely give all three of these a shot, available now on Smokingpipes and any fine retailer across the US in a highly limited production. Make sure you get your hands on these before me and Alan smoke 'em all.
