Tasting Notes: Carter Hall
In this episode of Tasting Notes, Shane revisits a blend we've all likely tried at some point: Carter Hall. Though often recommended for beginner pipe smokers, this old-school Burley blend actually offers more nuance and character as your palate grows and develops. Plus, you can pick up a pouch just about anywhere.

Respect to the OTC's ... Great review 👍
Great review, Shane ! CH was the tobacco I started out on and it remains a favorite. (Sad to see that they dumbed-down the packaging.)
I love Carter Hall . It's my favorite I think . By itself or mixed . I mix it with Sutliff's Black Cordial , makes a perfect tobacco .
CH is my go-to, every-day (almost) choice, and works well for me mixed with several other tobaccos. My wife smokes it, too, and loves it in her Specialty Tankard P-Lip. I have other tobaccos - flakes and blends - cellared and aging that I also enjoy, but am never far away from a bowl of Carter Hall.
Carter Hall. It is simple, unadorned in my opinion. My preference is English blends, but I find myself smoking Carter Hall at least once a day. I could easily smoke nothing but Carter Hall, it is a good, all-day blend. I smoke usually in the afternoon after lunch, two to three bowls full of my rotation of blends. When I have an after-dinner pipe, my last of the day, it is Carter Hall. I could easily never smoke another aromatic, but this Burley blend, I will always make sure I have a supply on hand. It is mostly Burley, with, it seems, a bit of white Virginia added. I would say to Burley blend folks, to not turn up their noses because it is a classic OTC blend, but to give it a try. As far as price, it is inexpensive so a small pouch won't set you back. Smokes fine right out of the pouch, without any need for drying. Matter of fact, I am smoking the last of a bowl full while I type this review.
