About This Pipe Tobacco

Like the more mellow-bodied Capstan Yellow, Capstan Blue was originally created by W.D. & H.O. Wills of Bristol well over a century ago. It's remained a favorite to countless pipe smokers across generations (J.R.R. Tolkien having been one of its most noted aficionados), a testament to the quality of this fine Virginia flake, here offered in ready-rubbed form.

Good, but unjustifiably expensive

This is a must try blend for all pipe smokers. It's a long time classic and was allegedly a favorite of Tolkien, so it's a must for fans of his legendarium. It has the classic sweet, grassy flavors that you would expect from a straight Virginia, but I also get floral and black tea notes that make for an overall interesting smoke. That said, $20+ USD for a 1.75oz tin is absurd for anything other than a limited edition small batch blend (and even then it's a bit much). There are simply too many other Virginias and VaPers that I like as much - and in some cases better - for me to purchase Capstan Blue on a regular basis....Read More

Terribly overrated. It's popular because of Tolkien id imagine. It's why I wanted to try it. I wasn't impressed. If you haven't had it, you should definitely try it. It's one of the ones everyone should at least try. But I found it to be very bland, mild, and just don't want it in my pipe. I've heard time will help. But a year ain't enough, pulled some out the other day, still taste horrible. It's just a crappy blend....Read More

The cost and need to age for at least 6 month to a year make this a blend I would not regularly buy. If I’m in a brick and mortar and they have a ton with age on it or it is on sale I may buy a tin. The new price makes it double the cost of many other blends. Not certain it is twice as good. First time trying this and must say I am not disappointed. This is probably my second virgina that I have tried and I am comparing this to Sutliff Virginia Slices. Definitely, a mild smoke and I could probably smoke this all day long if I wanted too. I find that it is mellow and has a good taste throughout the bowl. Definitely, recommend. I did buy some Capstan Flake to age in my cellar. The ready rub I smoked straight out of the tin and it was a good blend....Read More
