SWR & Vinegar

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
I use to love SWR. It was a comfortable codger blend. But lately, every pouch has smelled and smoked of vinegar! Ugh. They have ruined a wonderful pipe tobacco.

I can just barely taste the SWR goodness through a very unpleasant, vinegar sourness. I hope I just got one bad pouch, and it's not the new normal.

I understand why Americans are so in to their vapers now. This blend isn't one but it is so tangy. Almost like smoking chocolate vinegar. In a good way. 👍🏼 for this blend. Classic easy every day smoke 0 bite and you can really smoke bowl after bowl and it is still great each time. Similar to st bruno, same vinegar but no floral....Read More
Granddad and I (Part 2)
April 07, 2019
Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
I loved my Granddad. He remains my watermark of a real man. A Bataan Death March survivor, he came home from WWII determined to make the best of life. He retired a Lieutenant Colonel and moved to the open country of Texas where he raised two sons and loved my Grandmother unending. I was his only grandchild and he would do anything for me... anything. He had taken up the pipe and it gave him much joy. But, sadly I was a kid in the 70s brainwashed by PSAs every Saturday morning. I used to cry every time I saw him smoke and I'd say “Granddad, I don't want you to die.” Eventually, he gave up smoking entirely. When I was in High School he passed away of cancer anyway. I choose not to cry over this memory. It makes me mad because he had every right to do whatever he wanted and he loved the pipe. I blame the anti-smoking campaigners for using a naive child to do their dirty work. He deserved to smoke his pipe and love his grandson and not to have to choose between them. I choose not to dwell on it, I'd rather look forward. Granddad always said, if you want to do something “Just do it.” (he had a way of cutting through the BS). What I wanted to do after I began smoking a pipe myself was find and try what he had smoked. After a lot of searching the only tobacco I've found that seems to be the one is SWR Regular. I tried SWR Aromatic too, but it's the Regular that brought back memories... the smell of Granddad's wood working shop, of the Summer air riding with him on the tractor, of all those Christmas mornings, and yes, even the Saturday mornings watching cartoons. Everywhere he smoked his pipe I have fond memories of today. He was a man that lived life to the fullest on his terms. That's the sort of man that would like Sir Walter Raleigh Regular. I have no way to know for sure, but my gut says “That's the one.” every time I taste it. A SIDE NOTE: If you've read some of my other reviews, you know I also struggled for a long time with Burley blends, so it was quite a shock that I liked this one at all, let alone more than SWR Aromatic. Since then I can't get enough of it and smoke it on a daily basis. I can't believe it took nearly three decades to try this classic. Life is funny. Enjoy....Read More
Sour!

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
The bag/tin note on this was straight vinegar to my nose. I thought that would burn off in the pipe, but not so... It was very sour tasting. I like the taste of vinegar, but not in my pipe tobacco. I may revisit at some point in the future to see if it improves/changes. This isn't for me....Read More

An unassuming pouch with a picture of an Elizabethan man - Sir Walter Raleigh himself - when you open the pouch you’re greeted by the smell of tobacco. Just that. I lived once near a tobacco factory and this is what it smelt like. It is a bit moist but absolutely smokeable. It is. Chunky ribbon cut of dark brown tobacco. It packs quite easily from the pouch and light easily. I usually need a charring light followed by a tamp and rarely a second light. It tastes like burley. Nutty and rich. With a hint of sweetness that comes and go throughout the bowl, but is more prominent towards the end. Not much variation or change in profile, which makes it a simple, mindless all day smoke. It behaves really well, smokes down to a fine ash. Leaves no moisture in the bowl and doesn’t bite at all however hard you buff, or windy it is when you smoke. And it has a lovely sweet room note, that had been complimented by non smokers passing by the front porch where I smoke. Overall a decent tobacco and its more affordable price makes it a great tobacco....Read More
Ok Blend

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
On my codger blend journey that I have slowly taken as of late this is so far the best. Can't say much good about it but I may still smoke a pipe if this is all I could get which is my best observation of codger blends so far.
Ol' Trustworthy Pal

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
One of the brands started out with long time ago and still rely upon to this day as a trusted, everyday smoke. It is a brand that is reliable and savory straight from the can without much attention, just like an ol' trustworthy pal. I shall never get tired of this cut or its flavor.
