Granddad and I (Part 2)
April 07, 2019

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
loved my Grandmother unending. I was his only grandchild and he would do anything for me... anything. He had taken up the pipe and it gave him much joy. But, sadly I was a kid in the 70s brainwashed by PSAs every Saturday morning. I used to cry every time I saw him smoke and I'd say “Granddad, I don't want you to die.” Eventually, he gave up smoking entirely. When I was in High School he passed away of cancer anyway. I choose not to cry over this memory. It makes me mad because he had every right to do whatever he wanted and he loved the pipe. I blame the anti-smoking campaigners for using a naive child to do their dirty work. He deserved to smoke his pipe and love his grandson and not to have to choose between them. I choose not to dwell on it, I'd rather look forward. Granddad always said, if you want to do something “Just do it.” (he had a way of cutting through the BS). What I wanted to do after I began smoking a pipe myself was find and try what he had smoked. After a lot of searching the only tobacco I've found that seems to be the one is SWR Regular. I tried SWR Aromatic too, but it's the Regular that brought back memories... the smell of Granddad's wood working shop, of the Summer air riding with him on the tractor, of all those Christmas mornings, and yes, even the Saturday mornings watching cartoons. Everywhere he smoked his pipe I have fond memories of today. He was a man that lived life to the fullest on his terms. That's the sort of man that would like Sir Walter Raleigh Regular. I have no way to know for sure, but my gut says “That's the one.” every time I taste it. A SIDE NOTE: If you've read some of my other reviews, you know I also struggled for a long time with Burley blends, so it was quite a shock that I liked this one at all, let alone more than SWR Aromatic. Since then I can't get enough of it and smoke it on a daily basis. I can't believe it took nearly three decades to try this classic. Life is funny. Enjoy. Read Less

rientals giving you a different taste on every puff?
If so, then take yourself someplace else fancy boy, Sir Walter Raleigh isn't for you. What you get from SWR is the expected Burley nuttiness with a little bit of something else. A lot of people say cocoa, but for me it's just a bit of sweetness behind the Burley. Not layered, not complex, just a decent all day tobacco.
It isn't fussy about how it's packed. With SWR I generally use the "stick the pipe in the pouch and cram it full" method and that seems to work just fine. Doesn't really need a charring light, and will generally burn through with a minimum of fuss and bother. If you're an unapologetic puffer then it MIGHT burn a little hot for you, but no one else need worry.
It's a good choice for smoking when you can't devote your attention to the pipe...when doing chores, driving, times like that. Read Less

blend, and other classics have very much improved and I believe they have returned Sir Walter to its original recipe. You get a chunky ready rubbed/ cross cut blend of white and dark burley with a light molasses topping which I believe comes from dark rum. People mention licorice and or anise but I don't get that. There is mostly just the nutty, dark chocolate notes you find in any quality Burley. The tobacco also comes on the dry side but that works in its favor because it seems to taste better the drier it is. If you liked Edgeworth or Lane Limited Ready Rubbed this is very similar, maybe better. Read Less

done. So I turned the bowl upside-down, the ashes and a tiny bit of dottle fell out and....that was it. It had burned almost down to the bottom with zero re-lights. Burned fairly quickly, but didn't burn hot. Perfect for camping, chores, driving or anything else that doesn't require paying careful attention to what you're smoking. I would never buy a huge quantity of this to store, and I think that's part of its charm. What you see is that you get, and what you get is pretty darn good. I think I now understand why this brand has been around since before my grandparents got married. Read Less
Simplicity in a Smoke

btle hints of complexity over a very basic burley blend. The cut makes it easy to light and burn without relights. Over time I’ve realized that the complexity I detected initially is an anise note. Further smoking also brought a brown sugar taste, especially deeper in the bowl. Additionally, it’s a very smooth and silky smoke for me, almost as much as a straight black cavendish.
This is a pleasing simple tobacco, and there isn’t a thing wrong with that. This is my morning smoke! Read Less

uns steady through the whole bowl, lightly nutty, with hints of cocoa, coffee and molasses. Pretty well behaved and cool smoking if you keep a good 30 sec between puffs. Not goopy or suffering from harsh spots or chemical taste. Just cool sweet nutty burley. Makes a great companion any time of day. I prefer it in a small cobb like the Missouri Pride. The OTC pouch is pretty sturdy and I like to use it as a poor man's carrying case. It will hold a small pipe (stem and bowl separated), Czech tool, lighter, and several bowls of tobacco and still roll up nice and tight and fit right in your coat or shirt pocket. Very handy! Taking into consideration the blends history, simplicity, great price, wide distribution, pleasing flavor profile and cool smoking all day attributes, I give it 5 stars. Simply lovely! Read Less

ke sweet with a little liquorice note. Smoking it, it has a chocolatey/marshmallow flavour, with, oddly enough, a finish similar to black tea. I was expecting an earthy burley presence, but didn't find any. The cut allows for easy packing, and though it did burn a little hot, I can look past it. Overall, a really nice blend I can see coming back to. Read Less

ike it, it is affordable it is high-quality and I’ve never had another tobacco that taste even close to it. It has a very unique flavor. I don’t know how I would explain it acorns, coco and black currant maybe? Back to the point though the reason why I’m giving this 4 stars is because it’s my was daily smoke for years I probably smoke 5-10 bowls a day seven days a week and 3/4 or so of them were Sir Walter Raleigh. I will add, full disclosure like I said it’s a very unique tasting tobacco if you’ve never had it even if you like straight burley non-aromatics buy a pouch before you buy a tin. Simply the Best

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
t. I get why it's an OTC that has withstood the test if time. It's a mild burly blend that to me smells of chocolate cake in the tin. There is a hit of alcohol to it, so it's got a note of rum cake. Honestly the course cut of it took some getting used to for packing, since it is a bit dryer too. But I found that codger scooping packed the best for this blend. There is an amazing earthy quality to it, and a creamy texture to the smoke. It smokes like coffee. Not that it tastes like coffee but it hits the same comfort feeling for me. It smokes easy, tastests like how I "think" pipe tobacco should and is a rewarding and comforting experience. There are hints of anise but it isn't overwhelming. I find there are hints of baking spice but mostly it tastes like good burly tobacco. The room note is not intended for others but to be frank it smells like what pipe tobacco burning should smell like. I think you do yourself a disservice if you don't pick up a pouch and try it out. Truly swr is a comforting, easy smoking blend that is easy on the mind, toung and pocketbook. Read Less

a bit on the sweetnut side then has a nice kiss of flavor that gives a dark sugar hint.
The pepper in the nose is mild and can be considered almost a spice.
The right pipe, smartly filled, with a measured cadence will give a lovely flavor from top to bottom of a bowl.
I was skeptical as I do search for only the sweet or nut style burly and I rarely find it so this blend is a nice surprise.
So I join the ranks of Enthusiasts who have rediscovered a blend in revival.
I say revival as there is a basic quality underlying the entire blend.
Tobaccos seem high quality and topping are lightly applied and quite appropriate.
Recommend to all Enthusiasts and all newcomers.
This is an accessible blend on many levels and creates a good starting point when exploring burly blends.
My personal note to STG is “Well Done!”
UPDATE:::
I have some Esoterica Tillsbury that frankly has way too much PEG applied and is still “damp” with over a year in a jar. Being hard to come by, I have been saving it for the day it finally dries out.
What Luck I find that Sir Walter Raleigh is a great counter to the Tillsbury.
Mixed 50/50 to find a smooth flavorful taste that is better together than each is separately.
A soft sweet cinnamon appears during a bowl!
I find it piquant irony that such a supposed top tier tobacco as Esoterica is made so much better by a “lowly” OTC blend.
