Vinegar, but somewhat fixable
June 30, 2025
Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
Never tried this so I got a pouch, opened it, it stung my nose with vinegar. Obviously something has gone badly wrong with fermentation. Hidden behind that assault there is an amazing smell.

Instead of throwing it away I laid it out and let it totally dry out, warning it will make the immed
iate area smell of vinegar. After drying all the moisture out of it the vinegar smell vanished. I RE-hydrated it and its now usable but that amazing smell has also become much diminished.

I smoked a bowl of it, but have nothing to compare it to having never smoked it before, it was okay.

If you have a vinegar batch, maybe give that a try instead of throwing it away.

Hopefully one day the classic SWR returns because that smell behind the vinegar was really nice.

What Is This? Vinegar weed?

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
What happened to SWR? This tobacco used to be a favorite OTC... but now? I recently bought a pouch, and upon opening got nailed in the face with a sour vinegar smell. It kind of reminds me of a corked bottle of wine. Something has to have gone wrong here. I can't believe STG is selling this. It is literally terrible....Read More
I'm changing the name

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
This is now called Sour Walter Raleigh. What a tragedy. I used to love SWR. I had heard that it had changed but wanted to see for myself. Just ordered a pouch from P and C (had some credit to use). I opened it last night 3/3/25. the sticker said it was 2024. Upon opening it was indeed vinegar smelling. it used to be a nice nutty raisiny smell. Smoking it, the taste was a sour twang like sour patch kids decided to jump in the tobacco game.
I don't know if STG just made a huge batch that went bad or switched toppings or cased it with something weird but let's pray they fix it. I can't see anybody actually liking this or thinking this was an improvement. Im pretty upset because SWR used to be a great codger blend for me. Guess I'll have to switch to granger which I've heard is similar. never tried it though. Maybe if enough people complain to the STG overlords they will fix the issue. my advice is check the manufacture date. I bought a pouch a year ago that was fine so anything pre 2024 is probably ok. ( i never smoked the US made so my opinion is based on the denmark made SWR).

Granddad and I (Part 2)
April 07, 2019
Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
I loved my Granddad. He remains my watermark of a real man. A Bataan Death March survivor, he came home from WWII determined to make the best of life. He retired a Lieutenant Colonel and moved to the open country of Texas where he raised two sons and loved my Grandmother unending. I was his only grandchild and he would do anything for me... anything. He had taken up the pipe and it gave him much joy. But, sadly I was a kid in the 70s brainwashed by PSAs every Saturday morning. I used to cry every time I saw him smoke and I'd say “Granddad, I don't want you to die.” Eventually, he gave up smoking entirely. When I was in High School he passed away of cancer anyway. I choose not to cry over this memory. It makes me mad because he had every right to do whatever he wanted and he loved the pipe. I blame the anti-smoking campaigners for using a naive child to do their dirty work. He deserved to smoke his pipe and love his grandson and not to have to choose between them. I choose not to dwell on it, I'd rather look forward. Granddad always said, if you want to do something “Just do it.” (he had a way of cutting through the BS). What I wanted to do after I began smoking a pipe myself was find and try what he had smoked. After a lot of searching the only tobacco I've found that seems to be the one is SWR Regular. I tried SWR Aromatic too, but it's the Regular that brought back memories... the smell of Granddad's wood working shop, of the Summer air riding with him on the tractor, of all those Christmas mornings, and yes, even the Saturday mornings watching cartoons. Everywhere he smoked his pipe I have fond memories of today. He was a man that lived life to the fullest on his terms. That's the sort of man that would like Sir Walter Raleigh Regular. I have no way to know for sure, but my gut says “That's the one.” every time I taste it. A SIDE NOTE: If you've read some of my other reviews, you know I also struggled for a long time with Burley blends, so it was quite a shock that I liked this one at all, let alone more than SWR Aromatic. Since then I can't get enough of it and smoke it on a daily basis. I can't believe it took nearly three decades to try this classic. Life is funny. Enjoy....Read More
SWR & Vinegar

I use to love SWR. It was a comfortable codger blend. But lately, every pouch has smelled and smoked of vinegar! Ugh. They have ruined a wonderful pipe tobacco.
Horribly Strong Vinegar taste

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
I was so excited as a new pipe smoker to get to try my grandpa’s old standby that I loved to smell so much as a kid and hoped to love it as much as he did. I hoped to make it a daily smoke of my own. I was so disappointed when from the very first puff it had a horribly strong vinegar that seemed to cover your tongue with the sensation. Why on earth someone would put vinegar on tobacco is beyond me but I am confident grandpa wouldn’t have smoked something so awful. Surely they changed this blend somewhere along the line. It did lessen a little down the bowl but the vinegar never went away. It was hard to taste anything but that. I’ve tried a dozen or more blends so far and nothing has had maybe 10% of the strength of flavor as the vinegar in this. I hope that this is a fluke but from other reviews it seems to be their new recipe or else they got several batches of bad tobacco that got submerged in vinegar…I really hope they make this to what I can only imagine it used to be as there is no way it could have been as popular as it was if they tasted like the pouch I got. I may give it 6 months and try another as I really wanted it to be good so badly. Maybe you will be lucky and get a good pouch but it seems as several have had the same experience. Hopefully the company sees these and makes some changes. P.S.- I noticed that there are experiences like mine that are all in the last months of 2024, so hopefully it was just some bad batches that got out of them testing a new recipe that they hopefully backpedal on. I notice before the last half of 24 you don’t really hear of this vinegar issue so it must me something new or isolated cases as of late....Read More

I can just barely taste the SWR goodness through a very unpleasant, vinegar sourness. I hope I just got one bad pouch, and it's not the new normal.
Sour!

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 1.5oz
The bag/tin note on this was straight vinegar to my nose. I thought that would burn off in the pipe, but not so... It was very sour tasting. I like the taste of vinegar, but not in my pipe tobacco. I may revisit at some point in the future to see if it improves/changes. This isn't for me....Read More
