About This Pipe Tobacco

The 2025 edition of Cornell & Diehl's Carolina Red Flake with Perique is a masterful tribute to the United States' historic Old Belt growing region, featuring two exquisite Red Virginia grades alongside genuine St. James Parish Perique from C&D's exclusive farm in Louisiana.

Grown, harvested, cured, and barrel-aged all at 31 Farms — a single, family-owned farm in the heart of St. James Parish, Louisiana — C&D's authentic Perique contributes unparalleled richness and complexity, ranging from deep stone fruit notes to bold, piquant spice. This rare varietal — the rarest in the world, in fact — combines with several top-tier flue-cured grades, including heirloom 2013 Mahogany leaf from Virginia; 2017 Red Virginias from North Carolina; and matured 2019 Orange leaf from Georgia. Together, these impeccable Virginia grades empower a kaleidoscope of complementary flavors, from baked goods and warming spices to brighter, citrusy highlights — all elevated by 31 Farms' Perique.

Components:

  • Mahogany Virginia from Virginia, United States. (Crop year 2013, 12.00% sugar.)
  • Red Virginia from North Carolina, United States. (Crop year 2017, 12.40% sugar.)
  • Orange Virginia from Georgia, United States. (Crop year 2019, 17.72% sugar.)
  • Red Virginia from North Carolina, United States. (Crop year 2019, 10% sugar.)
  • Orange-Red Virginia Tips from North Carolina, United States (Crop Year 2022, 13.53% sugar.)
  • Genuine Louisiana Perique from C&D's exclusive Perique farm (31 Farms) in St. James Parish.

Carolina Red Flake with Perique is enticingly cellar-worthy, with ample potential for aging. A dream-come-true for Virginia/Perique aficionados as well as a solid prospect for Virginia smokers, this blend is excellent for a range of smoking preferences and perfect for contemplative smoking sessions.

"Balancing deep undertones of port wine and stone fruits with highlights of pepper, spice, and citrus, Carolina Red Flake with Perique is rich, deep, and complex. It's how a Virginia/Perique flake should be."
- Jeremy Reeves, Head Blender at Cornell & Diehl

Thank you SmokingPipes!

Product: Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
I want to thank SmokingPipes for making such great tobaccos available to the keepers of the pipe smoking flame. Also wanted to say bravo for lowering the limit to 15 tins per day; it keeps the hoarders and resellers at bay and spreads the love around to guys like me who just want a few tins. SmokingPipes is first class in every aspect. Can't wait to try this latest iteration of CRFw/P!...Read More
So delicious

Product: Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
I like everything about it. Tin note, color palette, how it breaks apart and the smell it leaves in the air; all of this before it is even lit. IMO, it beats Steamworks. The vinegar note is lovely. The tobacco fires up so easily and the Perique is top notch, hits me where I want it and tastes oh so good all the way through. Bottom of the bowl is heaven in tobacco terms. Glad I stocked this one up with multiple tins for the next couple of years. Can't wait for the sister tin in 2026. It's the Perique, add more please😁....Read More
Excellent perique-forward VaPer

Product: Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
Being mostly an English smoker, this is the first VaPer blend that I've really fallen in love with. It strikes me as nice and heavy on the perique, as the predominant note on the retrohale is baking spice and pepper. As the bowl progresses, I get notes of stewed fruits, like figs and raisins and plums. I've been smoking this out of my new Peterson 124 Irish Harp, which is a great shape for this tobacco, I think. Looking forward to trying more VaPers from C&D....Read More
The best Small Batch?

Product: Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
I first bought Carolina Red Flake in 2020, and I thought it was just OK. Perhaps this was because I was not that experienced with this kind of tobacco at that time. Today, however, I love this small-batch version — both the new and old ones. Turning to the 2025 release, I can smell freshness, ketchup and hay, as well as chocolate when I open the tin, but I don't think this tobacco has any toppings. Not to mention the tobacco's nice cut and presentation. In the pipe, the tobacco smokes very well, with the flavour remaining consistent from start to finish. Currently, the tobacco is sweeter as I miss the spiciness a bit. Still, this is a great tobacco. There is no drying time required and it is consistent from start to finish. It needs some more relights than your usual tobacco, but it never bites, no matter how you smoke it....Read More
Small Batch Bliss

Product: Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2oz
I am an avid fan of VaPers, so I knew that acquiring this blend was a priority.

Upon investigation of this tin, a noticeable vinegar smell is present. Not unlike our dearly departed, McClelland.

The broken flake is soft and moist. The brindle strips look terribly inviting. It needed
some drying, just a forewarning.

Upon lighting, there is a deep, mature fragrance followed by a sour tang and prominent spice on the retrohale. The spiciness is very prominent and the sweetness embodied within the Virginias is remarkable.

As the bowl continued to burn, I noticed that I was no longer getting the same measures of smoke. That's when I noticed that it had in fact burnt, unnoticed, to the very bottom and there was nothing left, but ash.

Like many other fine small batch tobaccos, it is to be savored and sipped. These delicate tobaccos will in fact get their revenge if you smoke too hastily.
This is akin to a very high end, yet potent, bourbon. I doubt a newborn pipe smoker would be able to fully appreciate the melange of flavors present in this. While not necessary, a developed palate will enhance the experience significantly.

Given the limited production and high demand, this will be a blend that I only smoke on a special occasion or holidays. This will be the perfect after Thanksgiving dinner treat or the retreat from Christmas Eve into Christmas morning after stockings are hung and presents are spread under the Christmas tree.

CRF is nothing short of beautiful and masterfully crafted. Cornell and Diehel have given us another masterpiece.
