The 2025 edition of Cornell & Diehl's Carolina Red Flake with Perique is a masterful tribute to the United States' historic Old Belt growing region, featuring two exquisite Red Virginia grades alongside genuine St. James Parish Perique from C&D's exclusive farm in Louisiana.

Grown, harvested, cured, and barrel-aged all at 31 Farms — a single, family-owned farm in the heart of St. James Parish, Louisiana — C&D's authentic Perique contributes unparalleled richness and complexity, ranging from deep stone fruit notes to bold, piquant spice. This rare varietal — the rarest in the world, in fact — combines with several top-tier flue-cured grades, including heirloom 2013 Mahogany leaf from Virginia; 2017 Red Virginias from North Carolina; and matured 2019 Orange leaf from Georgia. Together, these impeccable Virginia grades empower a kaleidoscope of complementary flavors, from baked goods and warming spices to brighter, citrusy highlights — all elevated by 31 Farms' Perique.

I was about three or four bowls into this blend and I must say I had a rather blah opinion. Then I dried some out something changed. Being mostly an English smoker, this is the first VaPer blend that I've really fallen in love with. It strikes me as nice and heavy on the perique, as the predominant note on the retrohale is baking spice and pepper. As the bowl progresses, I get notes of stewed fruits, like figs and raisins and plums. I've been smoking this out of my new Peterson 124 Irish Harp, which is a great shape for this tobacco, I think. Update to this review, sitting here puffing on some Carolina Red 2025 while waiting on USPS to deliver my Carolina Red 2026. Just thinking CR 25 is going to be hard to beat this year especially with CR 26 don't have that St. James Parish Perique. It really is that good! Out of the tin, the presentation is excellent — well-cut flakes at an ideal moisture level, ready to smoke with almost no prep. The tin note leans dark and rich, offering figs, plums, and stewed fruit rather than the brighter hay or citrus common in other Virginias. The first light is subdued, but the quality is evident. As the bowl develops, the Virginias take center stage — smooth, bready, and slightly tangy — while the Perique stays supportive, lending depth and a measured spice without ever dominating. Mid-bowl, the smoke rounds out with a creamy, full texture that holds steady into the finish. Compared to other VaPers, Carolina Red Flake with Perique is less spicy than Sutliff’s Crumble Kake or Watch City’s Old Dominion, but it carries itself with more polish and refinement than either. Where those blends can lean sharp or edgy, this one favors balance, depth, and smoothness. The final third brings a touch more strength and spice but never loses composure. Overall, this is a refined Virginia/Perique — not a fireworks show, but a study in restraint and craftsmanship.
