’t say no and curiosity drove me the rest of the way. The tin note gives it away as a Virginia Perique mix. Fruity and rich. A very nice thinly sliced flake that was easily rubbed out for my recently acquired Professor. Jeff did the same but in a tried and true Savinelli . A little charring light and off we went. I was pleasantly surprised by the mildness, coolness and rich smoke. Almost as if the stuff had aged for a while. We broke out a bottle of sipping quality Bourbon and proceeded to enjoy the fine fall afternoon on full tummies with full pipes and a tasty dessert drink.
This is without a doubt the most well balanced blend I think I’ve ever smoked. Best quality leaf and expert proportioning were evident immediately. Lucky for me, Jeff is a Cavendish smoker so I was able to bring home the tin minus only two bowls. I tried a bowl after breakfast today and it was a bit smoother this morning than yesterday. I can see that it won’t last long but I’m always hesitant to buy too much nit knowing what it will be like. So I have most of two tins and that’ll keep me going for a while. I’ll pray for a re-release and get some more should it become available. I’d be happy smoking this one for a very long time. It hits all the right buttons and was worth the wait. Sweet earthy scent right from the tin. The flavors of dried cranberries and light citrus in the background. Slight hit of spice. There’s nothing about this blend I don’t like. Truly my favorite vaper. Can only hope they make more.

t the Perique seems to be stronger in this blend than in the XX Dark Flake. The red Virginas were certainly evident however (especially at mid bowl till the end), bringing forth dark fruity and earthy notes. The fermented character I assume comes from both elements.
If you are a lover of Perique, this blend will definitely satisfy. Their age and quality is evident. The Virginas are enjoyable, though age is needed I believe, to bring them forward and pull the Perique back a bit. Not a top VaPer for me and it settled slightly below my expectations, but it is still a solid blend that I will pull out of the cellar from time to time.
I would give XX Dark Flake a 9/10 and this blend a 7/10 (though age will no doubt boost the rating up) Read Less

why I use the term toasty instead. Its spicy, very spicy upon retrohaling. The earthiness of the Virginia's is subtle in the background of the perique, with a very slight sourness.
Overall it's a very enjoyable smoke, but I've never experienced a VaPer in which the Perique shines so brightly. As a predominantly english smoker, I confess the potency of the Perique is a little much for me, but it fits brilliantly with the chill in the air. It was pretty moist out of the tin, though I did not get any tounge bite from it, but I let my bowl sit out to dry for a couple hours before smoking.
I do enjoy this smoke, in general it's a good spicy VaPer, with tones of earthy Virginia in the background, and it certainly owns the title "W/Perique". Read Less

beginning of September 2021 just like the previous one. I never tire of mentally thanking the workers at Cornell & Diehl who put date labels on these tins.
The appearance of the tobacco is the same swollen flake strips that easily diverge into individual fibers as its sibling, Carolina Red Flake. But the color, of course, is different. Whereas there was a monochromatic yellowish-brown shade of fresh leaves, here the color is slightly darker, a shade of pine chaff. There is no dust, no excessive moisture either. The consistency is great, you can stuff it and light it up.
In addition to the basic aromas of wheat bread and fresh hay, there are obvious light raisin and cytrus notes, and on top of that the tobacco has a slightly salty, jerky smell with just a hint of pepper. Thanks to Russ Ouellette and his Golden Triangle collection, I've had the opportunity to sample perique from various regions of St. James, and if Cornell & Diehl added St. James perique here, at least some of it seems to have been picked somewhere in Paulina.
The flavor was luxurious for such a fresh tobacco. A very pleasant wheat note was complemented by a slight peppery finish mixed with unsweetened dried apricots and a subtle hint of cocoa. However, very soon another note was added to this bouquet - dried tomatoes. I think my guess about Paulina was right. The tobacco smokes very gently, doesn't bite or burn the tongue. Despite the wide bowl and overall consistency, it smokes quite slowly, leaving less moisture than a simple Carolina Red Flake. Of course, at the expense of the perique, it also has a different strength - it's higher, and you can get a nicotine hit from a large pipe. I felt a slight manifestation of it at the very end of the smoke, which gives me reason to consider the tobacco to be slightly above average strength. The aftertaste of the tobacco is caramel-malt with a slight saltiness on the tongue, quite pleasant.
The smoke from tobacco has a grassy, woody smell with a slight spiciness. I liked it very much, in addition, it is quite light.
The bottom line: This tobacco is very good even when fresh. I can only imagine how good it will taste in five years. Virginia perique blends age, gaining flavor and sweetness, and this one will be no exception. Considering it's a limited edition, you need to stock up on it now. It's worth it. Read Less

ht and builds to a medium spice level that lasted the entire bowl. It also gave me a fruity sour sensation on both sides of my tongue that complements the red wine flavors perfectly. The components of this blend work perfectly together, they are easy to pick out on their own but at the same time meld together to form one fantastic smoke from beginning to end. This has enough moisture out of the tin that I gave it about 15 to 20 minutes of dry time, just enough to help the burn without losing any of the flavors and it needed just a few relights and left some moisture in the bottom of the bowl at the end. The nicotine strength I would place at a solid medium to full, there was enough that you could definitely feel it when the smoke was done but it isn't enough to bowl you over even if you're more sensitive to it. Carolina Red Flake with Perique for 2021 brings everything I want in a VaPer blend: dark fruit Virginia flavors, a nice sour note, and plenty of spiciness to make one memorable smoke! Jeremy Reeves and company at C&D hit another home run with this one in my book. An easy five star rating for this one. Read Less
