Almost Great

Product: Cornell & Diehl Belmont Station Bulk
I didn't remember this was an aromatic until opening the bag where it was made immediately obvious. It has that syrupy texture and powerful smell that I associate with aromatics. The cut is very coarse and uneven, lots of large pieces of tobacco.

Initial light up was very easy. The init
ial flavor was very smoky, reminiscent of a campfire; with a prominent vanilla after taste. The flavor was very monotone throughout the whole smoke, but the topping became more apparent and left an odd feeling in the back of my throat.

I think this blend is trying to be somewhere between a full bodied tobacco and an intensely flavored aromatic, but I can't help but feeling it would be better without any casing at all.

Unique Blend

I bought an ounce to try. What intrigued me was the components. Aromatics commonly contain Virginia, Burley, and Black Cavandish in various ratios. This blend however contains Dark Fired Kentucky. I taste the Dark Fired which is tasty. The topping is present but light. It mixes with the sweet Virginias and Dark Fired very well....Read More

This was an interesting one, bought at a cigar lounge randomly.

At first, it seemed well balanced and exceptional, for the first few bowls.

After jarring it up and leaving it for a few weeks, I now find it lackluster and not worth it. I do like seeing Aros with DFK, which is fun, but
it just doesn't stand out....Read More

Pipes:
*1st smoked in my M.M. "Mini" (break-in the pipe - I'll exclude these result though pleasant).
*Next smoked in my M.M. "Little Devil Cutty".
*Finally, smoked in my M.M. "Legend".

Overall Profile:
*The strength is low - never got a nic-hit, nor did it bite at any point.

*I found the room note to be pleasant.
*The taste falls in the middle - not overwhelming, nor underwhelming. Balanced in my opinion.
*Bulk Blend
*Ribbon cut aromatic
* Not overly moist. In fact I found the moisture level spot on.

Flavor:
*I'm not experienced with Dark Fired Kentucky but it seems to be used in a condiment proportion here. There is a floral note that I assume is coming off the DFK that I've read as Lakeland like. I haven't had Lakeland, however, the floral notes match the description.
*The dark rum takes center stage with note of molasses popping in and out through the first half of the bowl.
*Vanilla is present but as what seems like a flavor softener. I noticed it only because I just finished up smoking the last of my Backwoods Buttered Rum, so the softer edges and rum note I believe comes from the vanilla.
*All around the flavor reminds me of ginger bread/spice cake. Not exactly, but reminiscent.

Although this is a rather mellow aromatic it is not flat or one dimensional. The tobacco components (I feel this is a Virginia based blend) don't ever seem over powered by the topping (which is moderate to light). Nor does one tobacco component seem to dominate the bowl.

Overall this is a enjoyable and balanced aromatic. I will be ordering more as a year round smoke.

The C&D Bulk Blend Library Project

Belmont Station
Smoking Pipes Rating : 2.6

This ribbon cut aromatic is visually pleasing with hues from gold to black , comprised of Virginia, Dark Fired Kentucky, Burley and Black Cavendish.

I smoked two bowls in a new MM Missouri Pride.

This blend stumped me. Upfront I’ll say I didn’t care for it , not because it was bad per se, but because it wasn’t anything.

When I opened the bag and took the library jar, the aromas I noted were sweet potato, black tea and something that reminded me of a Lakeland sauce. Kinda like the ghost of Condor. That got me excited. (Remember , for most of these I have not read the description - that’s important as you will see.)

Bowl one and I was confused. The “Lakeland” scent was yielding nothing but the faintest of faint tastes. It was like smoking hot air. Looking at my notes I didn’t cite anything directly negative or offensive - just that it was “nothing”.

A second bowl did me no better. I tried a slower cadence to no difference. Same when I pushed it a bit. At this point I gave up and red the description- and when I saw “dark fired” and “rum” I was even more confounded.

I’m guessing the rum is where I was getting the Lakeland like note. But I love DFK and damned if I identified it anywhere in this blend.
More of the same feeling that it was nothing , and so as I finished my bowl of hot aromatic air , I read the 13 reviews and was amused. They run all or nothing , with many other saying similarly that the blend doesn’t match the description, it wasn’t what they expected , etc , while others sing its praises.

For me , it’s a “never need this again” blend.

My rating : 1- I never want to have this again.

(This is the 9th of 101 C&D bulk Blends I am reviewing, starting with the lowest rated and working to the best.)
