An aro that smoked like a non aro

This blend smoked well for me. It had that body that I crave in a Virginia. The bourbon and vanilla makes it a smooth finish. Thi s has been moved into my rotation and smoked in my Bing's favorite.
Rustic and Harmonious Notes of Bourbon and Vanilla
April 23, 2020
Product: G. L. Pease The Virginia Cream 8oz
This is a beautifully rustic and harmoniously topped mixture. Pease recreates the nuance of a bourbon with slight vanilla notes, an oak charred cask and a sweet yet spicy finish. The topping is slight but accentuates the semi-sweet, grassy, woody an... Read More
d slightly citrusy spiced tobacco. If you like the weirdly topped Sutliff aromatics which attempt to hide inferior tobacco via crème brulee or peach cobbler – you’ll feel deceived with this as those are unremarkably linear and just plain gross. The Virginia Cream is a high quality leaf infused with subtle notes of a quality bourbon and natural vanilla. I don’t smoke aromatics, but this is one of the two that I do smoke on occasion and will always have in my cellar. Strong notes of quality bourbon are present on a slightly sweet but more pronounced grassy, woody and smoky foundation of Red VA and Dark Fired Kentucky in the first third. The nuance changes at the halfway point to a caramelized vanilla on woody grassy leaf. The last third is predominantly Virginia grassiness with touches of woody, oak-laden Dark Fired Kentucky. I didn’t pick up any noticeable perique notes. It’s got more nicotine that you’d expect and lands at 2.5 on a 5 scale. Read Less

king for aros in order to be able to smoke inside the house without turning it into a wasteland for any visitors, I went through classics like Q1, BCA, Molto Dolce, Apricot n cream, Autumn Evening and even a tin of Germain's Plumcake. All of them tasted like candy and desserts, too sugary for me to take seriously as an option. I was filled with hubris and foolishly felt I was too sophisticated of a pipe smoker to be pleased by those lowly aros.
I was giving up on my fruitless quest and resigning myself to smoking outside the house when I stumbled upon "the" Virginia Cream. And considering my background as a Pease skeptic and an enemy of aromatics, I must have been guided by fate to give it a go. Or by the marvelous tin art, who knows.
In the bowl it looked like nothing. The bourbony tin note simple, almost comic. Just a regular false light. Under tamping and the first relight it behaved like an ordinary gas station baccy. And then, suddenly, high above it, grassy, wheaty virginia. A full mouthful hanging there, unwavering. Until the creamy topping took over and gently sweetened it into a puff of such delight...! This was no concoction by an overhyped blender. This was a tobacco I had never smoked. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was smoking the breath of God.
Or maybe not. Pretty good though, and very smokable inside the house. Read Less

It doesn't really taste like an aromatic to me. I would put it in more of a navy blend category. You taste all the natural tobacco but with a slight alcohol topping. you are into the vanilla and bourbon, there are much better aromatics as well.
To bring out the flavors of the bourbon and vanilla I decided to blend Virginia Cream 50/50 with Sutliff’s Black Cordial. It is a cherry/vanilla aromatic. This brought the vanilla to the front of the flavor profile with the baked bread and cherry in the middle while the bourbon was in the background. It also produced a very rich, sew, cool, and creamy smoke with great burning qualities (once lit, it burned to the bottom of the bowl without further relights).
Next I tried 50/50 Virginia Cream with Sutliff’s Creme Brulee. This time the caramel/bourbon were up front with the vanilla and baked bread following slightly behind. It also produced the same smoke qualities.
In conclusion, as a straight up smoke I can’t recommend Virginia Cream. However, in my opinion, as a blending agent, it’s wonderful. Read Less

an unusually warm day here and so I loaded this blend into my Peterson (also purchase here at smoking pipes.com.....thanks guys!) and put my feet up in the sun.
The tin note on this one is fantastic!! I'm a great fan of a good bourbon but I would not say this smells as if it has been topped with a mature bottled bourbon. Instead what comes comes through from the tin is more like a sour mash or a young bourbon that's just beginning to take on the barrel notes of vanilla and wood tannins. The aroma is sweet with a touch of sour or piquancy in the nose. There are notes of dried orange peel or candied orange and vanilla and the smokey notes of bourbon.
Some have complained of tongue bite on this one and so, as a new pipe smoker who is still learning to slow down and not try to keep my pipe lit by over-drawing, I worried this would be a problem for me. To the contrary, I found I got virtually no tongue bite at all. It took to the match quite well with only one relight after my char. It has a nice creamy white smoke with good vanilla notes, and a bit of spicy perique in the retrohale.
Many have called the flavor of this blend sweet.....which it surely is.....but I found, and particularly enjoyed, some slightly sour and spice flavors coming through. If one were to stay with the bourbon theme I would have to say the spice reminded me of a really nice glass of Rye while the sour really evoked a bourbon like Mitchner's Sour Mash.
This may be the first blend I've tried where I actually enjoyed the development of the entire bowl. It evolved a little for me as I worked my way though starting with the Mitchners Sour Mash flavorings early on....mid bowl I started catching flashes of my grandfather's cigar....and then near the end an unexpected sweetness came through again at the bottom of the bowl.
I've tried other aromatics in my efforts to figure out what sort of blends I might like. In general I've found I may not be an aromatics fan. I find many of them are at their best in the tin. Most become fairly off putting as the bowl progresses and become downright unpalatable at the bottom of the bowl.
Virginia Cream is the first aromatic (is it really an aromatic??) that progressed wonderfully and finished clean with the original flavors coming through right to the end...again....sweet with a hint of spice and sourness that, for me, was just right. I ws surprised to find it smoked down to a clean and surprisingly dry white ash leaving a very clean bowl.

pect to try everything he makes, at least once. So, I can't compare this to other Aros.
When I opened the tin, I thought it was doomed. It smells like, well, an aromatic! It has that big bold foodsy aroma that to ME screamed "wouldn't it be nice if I were as pleasant to smoke as I smell" Some coffees are like this for me,the beans smell like Heaven, but once ground and submitted to 200* water, it tastes nothing like that aroma. Not BAD just, not the same.
This, more than maybe ANY other smoke i know, tastes JUST like it smells. I'm serious. I couldn't believe it.
This is a lovely and lighter Va blend, on it's own, as a foundation for the enhancements of, as I understand, bourbon and vanilla. If the flavorings weren't there, it'd be a nice, forthright Va smoke with not much strength, and also not too little going on. Its what you'd expect from the blender you already know, the one who gave you Union Square, and Sixpence (my darling).
I doesn't smell or taste like cream soda to me. It smells like "pipe store" and tastes more like Peach Cobbler a la Mode. I can't say I taste bourbon, but I think I feel it in there. I don't really smell it, but, sense it. It's all come together in a way that is almost like the added flavors are another type of leaf. Like Va/Per. This is similar but instead of Perique, its lightly sweet Vanilla liqueur.
I can absolutely see someone not liking this if they pack it too tightly, or puff too fast. For example, its the opposite of Sextant in that way, which seems to love to be run fast like a sheep dog. It just gets more "itself". The Virginia Cream is a lapdog, and like the slow jam with puffing cadence, and strength. Sip at this one, and it rewards you like a nice dessert. Not mass produced birthday cake, but a lovely filled pastry.
Likewise, my wife said that no matter how much she may like any smoke, they're all hard to be near while I smoke them, except this one. Not sure why, but she found it easy on the second-hand.
Folks, give this one a spin. Its different. Its nice, and mellow. I tend toward heavy Balkans and English and heavy strong Va Per, but this is a welcome change of pace for me. Read Less

boozey casing. I DO NOT taste vanilla, or cream soda, or any other flavor that is promised in describing this blend. Even the tin aroma, described as cream soda, beechnut gum or bourbon whiskey, is missing my olfactory senses. All I smell is a VA Navy style tobacco and that's not a bad thing. It smokes like a VA, with the slightest hint of any additional sweetness. Calling this a "Rare for it's genre" aromatic-ish VA is in my opinion a mistake. I for one, am generally put off by the term "Aromatic". But increasingly I'm learning that the definition of THAT word has become a bit blurry. The stuff packs easily, lights well, and tastes fine. I'll smoke it any day, despite the fact that it doesn't "deliver on it's aromatic promise" for me. This bears little resemblance to it's advertised fanfare. But I like it, and if you like VA blends, you'll like it too. If you're looking for an Aromatic, I'm afraid this will disappoint you. Read Less

An atypical exceptional aeromatic

Product: G. L. Pease The Virginia Cream 2oz
I was very fortunate to be a lab rat on this blend and it really made me question what an aeromatic is, yes this blend has a great room note, and yes this blend is noticeably top dressed, but this isn't some mild tasteless tobacco someone threw a lot... Read More
of glop on to make it smell like candy, the tin note is fine tobacco, mainly premium Va's and an ever so slight vanilla and bourbon note. Now the complexity of this blend begs to be sipped slow and savored, this is a fine tobacco blend with a complementary bourbon vanilla both flavor and aroma. I highly recommend it it! Read Less
This is not your father's aromatic.

Product: G. L. Pease The Virginia Cream 2oz
This is a rare treat for tobacco lovers. It's not the first natural aromatic tobacco that prioritizes the taste of the leaf over the topping, but it's the only one I can think of that you can get without searching for a small boutique blender. This... Read More
is not the goopy, mostly black cavendish, never dry nonsense so often sold as an aromatic. It has a delicious sweetness, but the taste of the leaf is never obscured for a moment. In fact, after a DGT, you have to strain to find the topping and there's a nice spicy kick. That said, it's low on the Dark Fired compared to other Pease blends and one of few I can smoke without a raw throat. A wonderful blend to start at dessert and finish with coffee in the morning. I for one wholeheartedly recommend the new smoker exploring tobacco families choose this one for the ideal example of an aromatic. Read Less
