Nice and Simple
July 11, 2017
Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
As a former cigar smoker, I go through this blend if I want a straight, strong, spicy smoke. I don't detect anything fancy here, just a solid, simple smoke.
Not bad at all!

Now I have to note a few things to start off: This was the first ever tobacco I purchased for a pipe. I have rolled cigarettes, etc, but I am new to pipes. So this may not be the best review for seasoned smokers. Anyway, here goes:

ening the tin (nice tin, opens well), you notice incredible aroma of hickory and smoked meats (I kid you not. I have spent times in smoke houses and with butchers, and it is the smell of amazing high quality bacon that I detect!), along with some earth tones (think of a nice cool autumn morning in a Canadian/Northern US forest).
The tobacco is a little damp/wet out of the tin (hence not a full star for that). I let it sit on a piece of paper for about 10 minutes, and its the right moisture/dryness. A note about it, the ready rubbed is still pretty chunky (like a flake cut up into strips). I spend some time actually taking those clumps apart, and making it a TRUE ribbon. Then pack it a bit tighter than normal, and it burns well :)
As for flavour/strength. The first time I EVER smoked it, I had a pretty bad case of nic kick/nausea, but that, it turns out, is caused by the fact that I had an empty stomach and was drawing it too quickly to get it to light. After that, no problem, all smooth sailing. I would say it is a Medium strength tobacco. Flavour is quite nice and natural, without too many added "overtones". Like the description states, Earthy and rich.
I highly recommend you try a tin, if only for the fantastic aroma right out of the tin! :) Read Less

I love American-English blends, most of them found in the great Cornell and Diehl blenders. Still, I decided to buy JackKnife once more (this time ready rubbed), for I had not smoked it in years.
I loved the Ready Rubbed JK in most respects. The r... Read More
eviews on this page describe very well its rich and intense character. However, something was missing for me. I went to bed, and at around 3:30 AM I woke up and I had the solution.
The next day, I added a pinch of C&D's Latakia to my JK bowl, and this became a heavenly smoke! Read Less
Just as good as the plug!

Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
This is as good as the plug! Not as spicy, but very close, might last longer than the plug, but if you like the plug, you'll like this all the same!
Not quite like the plug, at least for me

I ordered the ready rubbed by mistake. My experience was not like most others. With the plug I like the smoky-raisin smell. For me, the ready rubbed was different; smoked OK, but I prefer the taste of the plug. So but I promptly ordered the correct t... Read More

Great DFK/Va Blend
October 20, 2017
Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
After having tried both the plug and the ready-cut, I would say there is very little discernable difference. If you like the work that goes into the plug, go for the plug but if you want the convenience of ready-cut, go for the ready-cut. You won't..... Read More
. be disappointed in either. The tin note is very rich and enticing. I am in agreement with Dr Brandon's assessment that the scent is quite BBQ like. Upon smoking, you will be rewarded with a sweet, flavorful taste where the DFKs and VA compliment each other perfectly. The room note is pleasant. As noted, there is a bit of a nic kick in this little gem but it is very manageable. I'm always looking for great DFK blends and this is one of them. I really love this blend and will be keeping this one in the rotation for a long time. Read Less

Tin note of sweetish barbeque and spices. Tobacco is brown and light brown Ready Rubbed. Moisture content is good, but drying may be preferred for some. Larger pieces may need attention and rub out easily. Burns slow with few relights. The strength i... Read More
s strong and nic is medium to strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is full and very consistent, with notes of wood, dry vegetation, floral, bitter, bread, nuts, spicy, rich earth, mildly sweet, mildly oak smoky, a mildly tangy citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Kentucky is leading with Virginia supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is good. Read Less
Ready Rubbed vs. Plug
September 07, 2022
Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
A pipester pal sent me two tins of the ready rubbed a few weeks ago. Since I finished my Jacknife plug, I opened a tin of the ready rubbed. This is great too. What I like is every bowl is exactly the same as the last bowl. On plug, I use scissors to ... Read More
break it up, and sometimes (not sure if it's my imagination) I get more or less of one component. The consistency on plug is different. Both are very pleasant though. So now I can be a fan of both. Next plug tin, I am going to break up the entire plug, and ready rub it, then put in the humidor. That should settle it. Read Less
Trustable blend

Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
I call it trustable beacuse of It can satisfy you whenever you want it. It doesn't as strong as Irish flake, also less sweeter than C&D burley flake #1. You never tierd to smoke it.
nice and simple

For some reason this version just won't produce a decent flavor for me. The plug tasted wonderful, not sure what's going on with this one. It's much easier to prepare, though.
This Ready-Rubbed Has You Ready For Bliss

When I spotted GL Pease’s Jackknife, I assumed I’d like it overall simply based on the ingredients. Burley and dark-fired Kentucky? With a smaller addition of Virginia? Sounds like some of my go-to favorites. I hit the buy button.

even prefer this to Sansepolcro, the small batch charmer from one of my favorite blending houses, Cornell & Diehl. A blend I’ve both smoked and cellared. In that blend though, there is Black Cavendish and the Virginias play a larger role. Yet, I’m far more a fan of burley than Virginia. I prefer string blends and Jackknife is a notch stronger than Sansepolcro. Thus the opening for Jackknife presents itself...
I can puff Jackknife faster than my rubbed-out Irish Flake, one of my top favorites. This offers practical value, as I can opt for Jackknife on my smoke breaks during the workday to get that special combination of flavors I love: barbecued brisket, toast, nuts and hay, with a hint of chocolate and coffee here and there, and a touch of spice. To my mouth, the dominant flavor, however, is that of a sandwich of barbecued brisket on toast.

Masterpiece blend

Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Ready Rubbed 2oz
Not for the faint of heart, this is a full strength blend of finest components managing to hit you with a powerful, strong flavor that has persistent light sweetness. As I write, I have a cob full going. It’s a very satisfying smoke that pulls no pun... Read More
ches with dark fired strength but has the finesse of quality Virginia’s contributing to its flavor. It’s a slow burner that is at ease when being sipped and a medium size bowl will easily go for at least an hour with no changee in taste or residual moisture at the end. I’ve tried both the plug and the ready rubbed but enjoy the ready rubbed for its ease of use...they both taste the same to me. It’s easy to get going and require no real effort to keep it lit and smoking. Pease really knows his stuff and this is a finest example in my opinion. I’ve been through several tins before writing this. Not necessarily an every day smoke but great for a change of pace and as a reminder that there are really fine unadulterated pipe tobaccos out there. This tin was opened by me in the store and smoked immediately. It’s date code says 060718, less than a year but great right out of a freshly opened tin. Relights aren’t harsh, just more of the same after a half hour pause. Seems like there may be a little Perique in there too...sort of a peppery nose. Read Less
Like A Good Cigar

I agree with the previous poster. This is an "old school" type blend with a nice nicotine kick. Try it with a little "blending cigarleaf" for a nice change of pace.
