A very strong, but very cool smoke is the result of combining in equal proportions only Malawi Dark Fired Leaf and Indian dark air-cured leaf. After maturing through processing and stoving, Gawith Hoggarth applies the traditional British flavors of licorice, maple and tonquin bean.

2025 December drop batch is proper

GH has been experiencing a quality downfall ever since 2023. Dark flake aro was negatively affected by it too. 2023 and 2024 batches were terrible - broken or loosely pressed flake, mild flavour, good burn. However, this year’s batch turned out right - well pressed flakes, full earthy flavour, bad burning characteristics requiring multiple relights. Now that’s a flake I fell in love with. So if you wanna buy some, but hesitate because of a lottery like experience GH is putting us through then rest assured this flake that is currently on sale (February 3rd, 2026) is of good proper quality.
PS. This year’s Bosun plug was terrible, Coniston was below average. My condolences to those who chose to buy them and wasted their money

This is what they smoke in Lakeland heaven. If you like lakelands, this is one of the best things you will ever put in your pipe. One word of advice: dedicate a pipe to this flake. The lakeland essence is strong with this one, and it will ghost. But when you enjoy lakelands, that's a plus.
Good, but one year has changed it.

I received this nearly one year ago. I tried it and the floral/rose 'perfume' was too much...for me. So I passed on reviewing it then and put it into a jar with vacuum applied. Today I tried it again and the floral/rose is nearly gone??? A year ago I thought if this were to occur, after some time, it would be more like "Dark Flake Unscented." But I was wrong in assuming this. For it's now a bit on the weaker/more-mellow side of both the strength and flavor of 'DF-unscented'. I still enjoy this, the 'Aromatic', but I am not sure I would order more. So I suggest...if you enjoy the floral 'notes'...purchase but a little of this at a time and smoke it immediately. But if those aromas are too much, you can let it sit and try again to see if you prefer what it morphs into. Also...this is even good with some "G.H. & Co. Exmoor Mixture" mixed in....Read More

Finding I’m smoking this and nothing else. Smooth, creamy, cool, no bite, just hard to beat. Does need to be dried out, depending on your humidity. Wife accepts the light perfume room note. Tried all the Lakelands, don’t mind the “old lady” notes. But DFA is most similar to 1792, which I also hold high. Waiting for more…...Read More
Delicious, but hard to deal with.

I love Gawith Hoggarth blends. Coniston Cut Plug and 1792 flake are both two of my forever blends. I thought the dark flake aromatic would fall somewhere between the two. It's flavorful and strong, but that's where the similarities end. It bites like a pit bull with a hemorrhoid. It's wetter than a Mississippi summer. It's higher maintenance than a trust fund chick on holiday. In India. I can see the appeal the flavor has. It's delicious. But I'm no masochist. I'll stick with the other options that don't leave my tongue feeling like a dominatrix just stepped on my tongue in stilettos....Read More
