I can't understand how so many people hate this blend; the only thing I can imagine is that they're smoking it too fast or in big gulping puffs (which many people do, especially those who use filters). When I first got this blend, I didn't even know how to pack my pipe correctly. I was packing too tight which caused the smoke to be steamy, incredibly bitey, and ruined the flavor of this delicate blend. When I see reviews that say "all I taste is cigarettes and ashtray", I realize that is all I tasted when I was packing and smoking this tobacco wrong. I've since learned how to properly pack this blend; gravity and some taps on the bowl is all you need. Use a gentle yet frequent sipping cadence (small sips) to coax the flavor out of this blend. Big puffs are just going to leave you tasting black pepper and ashes. When smoked properly this stuff is nutty peppery bliss, with just enough VA to round out the edges and add a slight bready note here and there. The flavor of this blend will get stuck in your nose and have you thinking about it right up until the next bowl. If you like burley, this one's a no brainer. If you tried it and hated it, try it again more gently, and perhaps without a filter. If you're new or nicotine sensitive eat and take it slow 👍 Thanks Matches, and thank you Bob 🤝...Read More

Good blend with a earthy but slightly sweet taste. Good hit of nicotine that keeps me away from cigs.

Bold and earthy, with some spice. It’s the perfect all-day smoke for Burley lovers, and I find myself reaching for it more often than anything else. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a strong, straightforward blend with character.
2nd time I loved it...

The first time I smoked this it really shocked me like I was smoking a cigarette. But at that time my palette was all autumn evening and other aromatics. I wasn't really good at even smoking a pipe yet. But then I had a season of being really into cigars which I think really smarted up my tobacco palette. Then I got back into pipes with non aromatic tobaccos and really came to prefer the pipe. In that time my haunted bookstore had aged in a jar for 2 years. I just pulled it out tonight and it I love it now. The nic hit is reminiscent of a cigarette and so is the flavor, but like the most delicious cigarette you've ever had. A chemical free one you rolled yourself. It's great. The virginia sweetens it up just enough, but I like the roll-your-own cigarettiness of it....Read More

The C&D Bulk Library Project

Haunted Bookshop
Smoking Pipes rating 3.9

This (possibly most controversial) burley blend is a rather bland uniform cut with the color of paper grocery bags. It’s dry to touch and has a dusty, earthy woody main profile with hints of hay sweetness and h
erbal spice.

I sampled two bowls for the review in a MM Missouri Pride.

Disclosure: I have had - and keep on hand - this blend for several years. For the integrity of the project I did order a fresh ounce and did not sample from my on hand supply.

Ok. This is one folks seem to love or hate. And interestingly I’ve been in both sides of the coin.

Haunted Bookshop is the poster child for the advocacy of cellaring burley blends.

When it’s is fresh , it’s kinda rough. The C&D trademark burley is all up in your face , the Virginia just flashes in and out with hot sweetness and the Perique can come off like spice added for the sake of adding it.

However - this review will veer off track a bit because I know from personal experience what some rest does for this blend. 6 months and it’s a little better - a year or more and it’s a totally different blend.

I like it. It’s bready, heady , strong and tasty.

If you have been on the fence for this one , I totally recommend you do not buy a tin - for basically the same amount of a 2 oz tin, you can get 4 oz of bulk. Divide it up I to 4 one ounce samples - and smoke one now , in 6 months, 9 moneys and a year. I bet you see the changes.

My rating : 4

This is the 46th of 101 C&D blends I am reviewing for this project.
