only because that by doing so, they also know they are discrediting the traditions and culture of rural life and history...their critique of Carter Hall is just one such example. I actually grew up on a farm in North Carolina; not in Boston, or NYC, or Seattle, or some place like that. We didn't farm tobacco because we didn't have any allotments, but the farmer down the road did. My granddaddy every year would be allowed to harvest a small portion of tobacco as a barter to things we had and/or grew. He would air cure it, and shred it himself, lightly spray something like simple syrup on it (i.e., sugar water), and guess what, it tasted just like Carter Hall when we smoked it (yes, I started smoking a pipe at a young age--12 in fact). Carter Hall doesn't have "undertones of honey" or "vanilla" or anything imaginary like that...it's simply a clean, smooth, great tasting tobacco that smokes cool and tastes consistent throughout the bowl. Please don't get caught up in all of the ignorance and pretentious idiocy that comes from others on the internet about Carter Hall; if you want an excellent traditional tasting smoke, this should be the first one you try (the other may be Sir Walter Raleigh's original blend). ch each of Carter Hall, Half & Half, and Sir Walter Raleigh on the table and said "try out what your grandfathers smoked, boys." We did, and I found that I had given these OTC (over the counter) blends short shrift. Are we all tobacco snobs sooner or later? ;-) We get so wrapped up in our tinned blends of Balkans and Syrian Latakias, Virgians and St. James Perique, that we forget that sometimes simple is okay, and maybe even good. I've got perhaps fifty blends at home and am cellaring many good ones for even more variety, so perhaps that's why I was open now to these OTCs, of which I personally liked Carter Hall best. It is a nice blend of Burley--which I've always slighted--and Virginias. Some claim a top note--perhaps, but it is undetectable by me over the flavor of the Burley and Virginia. One large point seems worth making. It seems common knowledge that one "sips" Virginias, rather than smoking them like the pipe is a runaway locomotive on a steep downhill grade. Well, this applies to a Burley-VA blend as well, and in my further experimentation with straight Burleys of late, I suggest that Burleys are to be sipped as well. I guess my approach is this. If the flavor of a tobacco is subtle, sip it slowly and let the smoke move around in your mouth, approaching your various taste buds until it finds the ones that resound with pleasure. If you accordian the smoke in and out, your taste buds will not enjoy the tobacco. Frankly this is why so many new smokers go headfirst into heavily cased aromatics, or, lately, strong Latakia tobaccos early on. I believe they are looking for a flavor hit that engulfs their taste buds like a jalapeno. The pipe smoker with a few thousand bowls behind him comes to realize that in this way at least, smoking a pipe is like drinking a fine bourbon or single malt scotch. (Or wine, for you guys reading this and still wearing your tie). You get nothing but drunk gulping booze. That's only fun until you pass your teen years. With a pipe, smoking it like a cigarette is not fun at all, for you or your tongue--or your palate.
I bet you thought I'd never return to talking about Carter Hall. Tobaccos like this are a great treat for your palate because they are mild, yet when smoked slowly, in small puffs (sipping), they reward us with a very pleasing flavor and yet are gentle on a tongue that may have been abused by our experimentation with other blends that are not nearly as gentle. I recommend Carter Hall as an inexpensive and pleasant way to while away the hours between the next pipeful of Samuel Gawith 1792. Read Less

This is not inferior or cheap tobacco by any means. This is one of the blends that have stood the test of time. Mostly a burley blend with just enough virginias to make it interesting. Has a nice aroma and nicotene content. Mouth watering good!

按照sp的风类标准，这款草属于burley，不属于调味，实际抽吸感受，v草甜和枫糖交相呼应，不辣舌。即使在口条不舒服的时候也能来一斗，很柔和甜，如果对调味草抽完后嘴里有怪异回味比较介意的斗客，可以试试这款，介于微调和调味之间的一款高性价比草。

, one day I was out and about and bought a Dr. G on-the-fly and needed a smoke...and there was a box of Carter Hall. It was cheap, handy and had an age-old reputation – sold. I'm not sure where things went south. The Grabow pipe is still around and smoking fine, so it wasn't that. The weather was nice. I was with good company and even in a good mood. Inside the box was a nice vac-sealed pouch containing a dark flat-ish ribbon cut, burgundy in color, that seemed an alright moisture level. Everything was going good. I loaded it up and started a char-light. That's when my taste buds screamed at me...”DIRT!!! WARNING: YOU ARE SMOKING DIRT! Remove from mouth and rinse to continue.” You think I'm joking? No way, that's the only flavor I got from Carter Hall - dirt. I tried hard to give this a fair evaluation. I think I wanted it to be good so bad that I tried convincing others “it's not too bad”. In the end, I don't think I could finish the bowl. Truly, this is the worst tasting tobacco I've ever had. To this day whenever I hear about a bad blend, I want to ask, “Is it Carter Hall-bad?” I give it one star – one for every time I've ever thrown tobacco away. UPDATE: I continue to try CH every so often just in case. I've grown fond of many Burley blends over the past couple of years and think CH may yet hold some secret I've missed. I've heard that the tubs taste better than the pouches. I'm not sure how that could happen, but I suppose it's possible. I know CH has its fans, and for that I try to keep an open mind about it. er about 4 1/2 minutes that tasted mellowed into a bland, mild, tasteless smoke. That allowed me to finish the bowl. My son, smoked a couple of bowls, to same effect. Needless to say, this is not the worst blend I smoked, but it is definitely close to it. The only redeeming quality I can find is that if I had made a bet to see if I could finish the bowl, I would only had to suffer for 4 1/2 minutes until the awful taste was gone. Read Less

morning coffee. I like my coffee to be dark roast with a smokey taste. My taste buds like Carter Hall because it mixes with the coffee flavor to give it an almost cocoa taste. I don't know if it is an all day tobacco because I don't smoke all day. I like a pipe with my coffee and in the evening. My evening pipe tobacco is different and may be an aromatic so that my wife can enjoy it too, but with my morning coffee Carter Hall is a good mix. I am not a Burley fan, but for this morning experience it does an admirable job. One last point, I have read some reviews that the reviewer seems ashamed that they like this inexpensive tobacco. Inexpensive does not have to mean bad. Carter Hall hasn't been around for 125 by being a bad product. Put your pride and ego on the shelf and enjoy Carter Hall with your morning coffee. I don't think you will be disappointed or ashamed. Read Less

I love this one. The fruity notes out of the can or the pouch are the same as the taste and room note. I mixes well with half and half and Sir Walter Raleigh. It does tend to smoke fast though.

you, I have bought and smoked some of the more expensive Burley blends, didn't care for them. But CH, I really like it. Simple, straightforward, a true delight when I want a break from my favorite Balkan or English blends. It is nice to light a bowl and just go on about your business. Matter of fact, while I type this review I am smoking some. This is not a cheap tobacco in the sense that it is an excellent value for what you get. Yes, I am going to keep a supply on hand and it will be a regular smoke. OTC blends tend to get shortchanged. Too bad. If you are a true Burley fan, I urge you to at least buy a 1.5oz bag and give it a go. Read Less

The aftertaste proved inconsistent: at times I disliked it and at times I liked it—and the sugar from the Virginias and to a greater extent the topping can give you tongue bite. I notice it burned my nasal cavities a bit, too. Still, I do prefer it to the recent incarnation/version of the old British OTC blend, Gold Block. And importantly, I’ve smoked through pouches and tins far more respected that I found less enjoyable than Carter Hall (most were aromatics). The flavor was above decent. That drugstore pouch is a venerable old blend, in production since 1950, while its current blender, John Middleton, Inc. Has been around since 1895. Generations of pipe smokers have loved and enjoyed the blend. In the pouch it's a rough cut mixture of burley with a little bit of Virginia. The tobacco looks and feels natural, its not goopy, its organic to the touch and its actually the perfect moisture level, its dry enough to smoke when you open it. The pouch note is nutty, almond and sweet. You can smell a flavoring but make no mistake, this is an old school American burley. In the bowl it lights easily and rewards you with rich notes of toasted pine tips, earth, wood and espresso. ;, this is one of the best. It is a quality tobacco, not at all an inferior leaf. A nice consistent silver ash with good burning characteristics all the way to the bottom, little to no dottle.
Not an intense blend, or complex. Not something that is going to give a lot of satisfaction on vitamin N. But, I can see why folks have enjoyed it for years. It's just a smoke, nothing more, nothing less. Little bite, a great cake builder burns very well. Room note is pleasant, has that old school smell to it. I bet with a little more Virginia added to the blend it would be excellent.
Slightly aromatic, maybe... a hint of wine? It's hard to pin-point. Sort of reminds me of the same flavouring used in Half and Half, just much more subtle.
Does really nice in cobs in my opinion. I'll give it a whirl in a meerschaum. I've found it doesn't taste as well with pipes that have been broken and solidly smoked with mature Virginia's. Maybe I'll crack out an old Kaywoodie and reminisce on pops and granddad.
A classic American pipe tobacco, enjoyed for generations, with good reason. It's something that is definitely worth a smoke, with an open mind and a little nostalgia in your heart.
This is one of those brands, that all American pipe smokers should give a try. With every whiff I can stir up memories of casting a line with the old timers, or sitting in the duck blind with them. Read Less
