Escudo is well represented in my cellar and for good reason. This blend ages with the best of them. Although, I really enjoy this blend with just a year of age on it. At this time when you crack a tin it has an incredible tin note of muscadines. The smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. The blend supports a wonderful mix of fruit, spice and a touch of hay (particularly when it is young). Give this one a try if you have not done so already. Read Less

I don't write reviews often, but this one seemed to be a given. As is my usual practice, I opened a tin of Peterson EMP, the day after I got it, and the day before I smoked it. The introduction of air to a vacuum sealed tin always tends to excite the poor tobacco that has been deprived, and it gets it pretty excited. Well I must say I was incredibly happy to have EMP back. From the moment I opened the tin I could remember the wonderful scent of Dunhill EMP. From the moment of the 1st burn, everything was right in the world again. Thank you Peterson for picking this back up, and keeping it exactly the same!! Read Less

This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. A standard; a classic. So terrific when your pipe aquires a taste for it after a few bowls. I cannot state enough how beloved Orlik Golden Sliced is. It is as perfect of a flake as one can hope for. This, in my opinion, is a firmly "middle of the road" VaPer. Tin note of raisin bran, smokes sweet and vaguely fruity. No particular flavors stand out from the constituent tobaccos. The perique is barely noticeable and the virginias are very mild. I suspect the flavors will improve with age. EDIT: I smoked another bowl this afternoon from a cob after letting the tobacco sit in a jar for a few weeks. You know, this blend isn't too bad. I still think it's middle of the road, but it packs enough mellow flavor that I added another star. I could see myself going to this tobacco for afternoon smokes when I'm not craving anything in particular. Read Less

Smokey, rich, and everything you want a on a brisk fall night. I was given a sample of this from a friend, and once finished I immediately ordered some and brought it into my rotation. Heavier on the Latikia side than I would have thought, but still those orientals find their way into the mix. I've heard this could be an all day smoke, but I usually like to end my day with it. The strength of the nic isn't going to push you over however, if you're looking for that I'd go with nightcap. This is my "sit by the fire and contemplate writing the great american (or english, I guess?) novel" blend. Full flavored, and feels like you're sinking your teeth into a rich, and savory treat. Beautiful presentation: nice tin which doesn't require a coin or pipe tamper to open. Beautifully pressed flakes wrapped in gold foil paper - similar to MacBaren. A little too moist straight from the tin but a few hours of drying and exposure to oxygen made it perfect. Semi-fermented figgy flakes steeped in their own juices is the base note. It has a Juicy Fruit gum kind of vibe going on. Its sugar content isn't terribly elevated, and the traditional effervescent herbal and floral notes experienced with Izmir, aren't here. I suspect it was topped and then pressed with a fruit extract and a type of Rosolio Wildflower liqueur. The spiciness comes on halfway and reminds you it's a sun-cured. It reminds me a lot of Savinelli 140 Casa Fondata Nel 1876 - 2022 Edition, though much fruitier. Won't bite but the spice prickles. It's a medium flavor and body flake with plenty of meatiness. For those that enjoy Oriental... this will be a treat. Nicotine is 2 out of 5. Read Less

This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! Now I'm the first to admit that this review may be quite subjective - but this tobacco has made it to the top of my list and has become my all-day smoke; to the extent that I'm hesitant filling my pipe with any of the other great tobaccos in my collection.

I love everything about Presbyterian, starting with opening the tin, feasting my eyes on the coarsely cut mixture of bright and dark leaves. This is accompanied by the delicious musty, earthy, and spicy aroma. The cut is ideal for the way I fill my pipe (similar, but not identical, to the 'air pocket' method).

The tobacco lights easily, even when slightly moist from a freshly opened tin. When it has dried out just a little, it can be smoked all the way down from the first light, although I would rarely smoke a bowl in one sitting; that is no problem though, as it maintains its delicious taste and aroma, even after cooling down and sitting for some time before a relight.

As a lover of Orientals, I find these tobaccos to be the star of the show, perfectly complemented by the Latakia and Virginia. I have always loved Latakia, and still do, but these days I prefer its use as a condiment rather than a major ingredient (as found in many English and Balkan blends); and in this regard, Presbyterian really shines. The components combine to give the tobacco a somewhat sweet, almost aromatic note, but one can sense that it is all natural, without any casing or flavoring.

I love retro-haling, and this brings out even more flavors, adding a delightfully pungent note to the smoke; and to me that must be Presbytarian's greatest achievement - providing so many delicious flavors without resorting to anything artificial.

As a previous reviewer has mentioned, my main regret is the fact that it is not available in bulk.

A lot has been said comparing the latest version of (Bell's) Three Nuns and it's predecessors, but all I've ever had is the modern take. And that I can tell you, is pretty good. It's dominating character is some tasty dark-fired Kentucky. The Virginia and Burley fall in behind the DFK with Burley coming in second most but not all of the time. The cut is curly, a.k.a. coin, and they are not tightly spun. The coins are small and fragile, basically lending themselves to an easy rub-out and they have a good moisture level. You could try to stack these but they're too small to fold. If you've had Mac Baren Dark Twist, the cut is the same. In fact, the two tobaccos are very similar. In my experience the Bell's is fuller bodied and a bit stronger in the nicotine department, but the flavors are the same...smokey without the Latakia campfire. I enjoyed this one fresh off finishing a Dark Twist 100g tin to make a side-by-side comparison for myself and I think I prefer the Mac Baren, but because they are so similar this could just be the tins I had. The Mac Baren was 7 years old, and the Three Nuns only a few months and I know that can make a big difference. If either of these sound good to you, get a tin of each. Three nuns should be tried by all. Tobaccos with pedigrees as old as this one that are still around deserve a try. Enjoy. UPDATE: Since I posted this review, Three Nuns has expanded to a nine nuns lineup: Red, Green and Yellow. It's worth mentioning that the Green tin contains Perique like the original version by Bell's. If you're looking for something akin to older versions, you may want to start with Three Nuns Green. I’m primarily an English smoker, and this blend has made it into my regular rotation of four blends. It’s well balanced, medium in body, and complex.

The orientals are the star of the show here. They taste strongly of incense, such as frankincense and myrrh. This is the primary taste that everything else orbits around. There’s a dry, pleasant sharpness to this blend, which is once again imparted by the orientals. At times it almost feels fresh and menthol-like in a pleasant way in the retrohale. The general impression is that of resinous Mediterranean wood. Fantastic!

The Latakia is quite present, but remains as a backdrop to the orientals. It has its usual smoky taste, with a mild leathery flavor to it. I occasionally get a slight mustiness in the flavor, which I assume comes from how the Latakia interacts with the orientals.

The Virginias also remain in the background. I occasionally get a mild buttery toasty flavor, which I attribute to the Virginias. Sometimes you may get a slight fruity flavor from the Virginias such as fig, but this is very subtle.

There’s absolutely no bitterness in this blend. Just balanced English deliciousness. Nicotine is just a bit passed medium, but it’s not excessive by any means.

If you want a good, complex English blend, try it! Read Less

I've only been pipe smoking for 3 months now, after hand rolling for 2 years and then smoking Marlboro's for 25 years before that. I don't bother to give a review unless I feel it's worth 5 stars.... I was a real tobacco snob at first and resisted this stuff when I saw it in a smoke shop because the pouch brought back childhood memories and I figured if my Grand Dad smoked it, there had to be something better out there by now. I've been having great fun sampling various Lane and Sutliff aromatics, but did eventually get curious and buy a pouch. After just two bowls I jumped here and ordered a big ol' tin to make sure I never run out. This stuff provides just enough of a back-of-the-throat hit, along with nicotine satisfaction to keep this former cigarette smoker happy, without any cough or burn. I've been packing a bowl before bed every night so it's ready when I wake up. Get some and try it. Read Less
