This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! I've only been pipe smoking for 3 months now, after hand rolling for 2 years and then smoking Marlboro's for 25 years before that. I don't bother to give a review unless I feel it's worth 5 stars.... I was a real tobacco snob at first and resisted this stuff when I saw it in a smoke shop because the pouch brought back childhood memories and I figured if my Grand Dad smoked it, there had to be something better out there by now. I've been having great fun sampling various Lane and Sutliff aromatics, but did eventually get curious and buy a pouch. After just two bowls I jumped here and ordered a big ol' tin to make sure I never run out. This stuff provides just enough of a back-of-the-throat hit, along with nicotine satisfaction to keep this former cigarette smoker happy, without any cough or burn. The addition of Tonquin Bean probably gives 1792 the edge over similar blends, but I happen to love that flavor so it gets five stars from me. This is an extraordinarily strong tobacco. A surgeon friend of mine, a very long-time pipe man, got nicotine-sick on this when I folded a couple of flakes in one of his pipes--he is not a "folder" while I am and I wanted to show him how folding changes the experience with the same tobacco. I have never had an issue with 1792 but I can sense the strength of it. Frankly I find the comments of smokers who LOOK for a "nic hit" to be juvenile--sorry fellows, that's MY opinion--that's not what pipe smoking is all about. If I never noticed nicotine in my tobacco I'd be happy, but my experience here does urge me to caution new smokers or those susceptible to nicotine-sickness. I've had some other friends cut 1792 with a favorite VA or Burley blend and the wonderful flavor of 1792 still came through, they told me, they didn't get the same strong effect of the nicotine, and they enjoyed the 1792--cut back. I've never tried that but it's an option. You know yourself better than anyone. If you like strong tobacco, if you love Latakia, if you are a fan of the Tonquin Bean, and if you are also a fan of flakes, this might be just the smoke you've been looking for. This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. Savinelli got it right with their new tobaccos. I got a tin of this when it first came out and have been buying it ever since. The blend is well balanced, rich, flavorful, complex, and strong enough for the seasoned pipe smoker without being overwhelming for a newcomer. The flavors of the various components drift in and out, but none dominates the others. It comes a little drier than most, which means it's perfect for smoking without any dry time, and you get more smokes per ounce. It also ages well, burns clean, no bite. …but I’m just not getting the espresso or coffee in this blend. The tin note is overwhelmingly artificial caramel and that’s about it. Now, I knew I would have a certain amount of bias. I’m a professional coffee taster, my job is sourcing coffees and creating and maintaining roast profiles for blends and single origin roasts for a specialty coffee company. That said, I am regularly tasked at categorizing flavors in coffee, such as tobacco for example. I’m just not getting coffee folks. Perhaps a Starbucks caramel macchiato, and that’s about as far as I can go. I’ve given it several attempts in clay and meerschaum, I’m afraid to put it in a briar due to the overwhelmingly sweet aromatics. If you like yankee candles, you’ll like the room note. Me, not so much of a fan. But we all have our own likes and dislikes. As for the smoke, I find it to be bitter, bland and burnt tasting. If you like darkly roasted coffee, this may appeal to you. If you do, that’s okay I’m not trying to put you down, we could probably still be poker buddies, just probably not fishing buddies. I think I’m just not a flavored tobacco kind of guy.
