smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. 艾斯库多的甜度是可以的，点缀的珀里克烟草增添了烟草本身的强度，过鼻子很舒服。私以为，dunhill豪华海军切片后，vp圆切片调配里就是它了。不过这款调配对新人并不友善，注意后半段的变化！

n’t exude a keen tin note or distinct flavor on the tongue like Briarworks’ VaPer, Back Down South.
Escudo is a comparatively old blend, and is more of an old-school VaPer, more subtle and not extreme, not blown out by perique like many newer blends, in the same way that older India Pale Ales didn’t try to mow you down with hops (like many do today).
Its tin note is not distinct; it is instead very subtle and subdued. To my beak, it is of hay and is very faintly fruity with a tinge of black pepper. As I break up the coins and puff I detect two levels: that mild hay mixed with fresh bread, and then the light layer of black pepper. Escudo’s imminently easy to smoke, and I see why thousands of pipers going back five generations have stocked and puffed this, and why many who have piped for decades more than myself claim this as their all-day.
Interestingly, my first bowl didn’t charm me outright. It was just one of those blends. But after two or three more, I “got it”. And after I aged it, I understood it even more.
I’ll always keep some Escudo in my cellar, for both short-term and long-term enjoyment. Because I just have to! 4.5 stars Read Less

much more than what I got. I initially thought I must cellar it, which I did. I tried it after a week, then after a month, then I decided I'd cellar it for a few more months hoping to let it age a bit. It's getting there, but it's now in the cellar for the forseeable future as it'll obviously take a year or more. So, what was really wrong? Nothing really. It's pretty good. I tried the fold/stuff, I tried it rubbed out, in both briar and cob...it smokes good, not at all difficult. The taste was nice, but it seemed a little harsh. I had a similar experience with Dunhill's Elizabethan. I do enjoy other VA/Pers; I've had Stokkebye's Bullseye Flake which is often compared to Escudo and I liked that rubbed out. I also enjoy C&D's Bayou Morning which is stronger and yet not as sharp. Perhaps my favorite would be Murray's 1921 Cunningham which is near perfect fresh from a new tin. The Murray's may not be an apples-to-apples comparison though since it also contains rum, which I also like. We each know what we like. Escudo isn't bad - it's quite good. But, it's just not my go-to VA/Per. Read Less

Plain and simple, this is the benchmark VaPer blend. It has some grassy hay and fruit bites from the Va’s and some peppery and figgy notes from the Perique. The Perique has a solid punch to it. Highly recommend this if you’re getting into VaPers

I don't know if it's the perique or the plum topping but I get a lingering dark fruit taste in the back of my mouth, for days, from a bowl of this tobacco. Its a bit off putting. Read Less

kick because of the Perique; but it was a mixture of a very earthy fresh cut hay smell mixed with dried fruit. The taste was just as surprising as the smell! A very smooth and soft fresh cut hay taste with hints of dried fruit and toast! Very enjoyable and relaxing smoke. Some things to keep in mind though are that because of the VA content you need to be mindful of your cadence while smoking. VA tobaccos have a high sugar content which make them burn hot. I was enjoying my pipe so much and puffing so fast for the taste I got the thing so hot I had to put it down to rest for 10 min. So although it is very enjoyable I would be careful if you are a new/inexperienced smoker in that you should pace yourself. This is definitely one of my new favorite tobaccos and I will most assuredly be buying more in the future! Read Less

This is the first blend that I have ever had where I tasted the 'bready', 'bakery' virginas! The smoke is subtle, not like some of the others I mentioned, but if not pressed too hard you can find some deep, and rich flavors. Bready, sweet, and of course spice! rub out, but does come fairly wet. Once properly dried, this tobacco smokes very well with few relights required. Sweet but also with a little more depth than I expected. Moderate amount of perique. (serious, come to germany and smell some handcrafted bread!) with a slight touch of leather (distant) ... ok, rubbed ub the smell only gets better - a touch of fruit adds itself to the flavor ... bowl filled ... first puffs ... oh my ... so mild and somewhat slightly nutty ... no bite to the toungue ... after half of thew bowl the taste gets a lil more intense and -- only better ... three thumbs up for this superb blend !!! account bad english to my german roots, D'OH! 一个受追捧的混合物。相传以前的艾丝库多是陈化好的。我抽这个不是，它出生在2022年。打开盒子是正切圆薄片，它是盲的。一股京式果脯味，带了点青草和海盐。我通常把它揉成团按在烟斗里。一个字香!果糖，木材，白胡椒粉还有点罗勒叶的味道。慢慢的抽，不要着急，后段通常会因为抽的太快出水，只要你慢下来他就会持续给到你甜味。最后它没有那么香，可上边的美好时光足以让我对它有好感。储存几年会更好!

bready VA, which I think goes so well with perique. But I'm not sure it's worth the added cost over say, Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake (LNF). Cellaring this could get expensive, and who wants to wait years for something you could enjoy now AND years later? That's why LNF is my choice over this; it's honey sweet, smooth, a bit grassy but also has a pastry-like nuance. While LNF doesn't have quite the black pepper that Escudo has, that fine for me. But the #1 VAPER is Sam Gawith St James Flake... by far the best. Add some age to this and I suppose this would be a 3 star product. Read Less

Very good tobacco, it’s one of my go to tobaccos. I’ve had much worse and one or two netter va/perique blends. Smooth, no tongue bite, has a stone fruit note to it, good moisture content, easy to fold and stuff.

ell covered by many more brothers of the briar who are far more experienced in sampling tobacco flavors than I. For me, it 's much simpler... I either like it or I don't & the reason/reasons why matter not to me. Escudo is the sweetest & number one VA/Per in my rotation.
I bought a roll of the vintage Copes version of A & C Petersen Escudo... you know, the stuff in the smaller tins but of the same weight. It was ten years old when I purchased it about ten years ago for a hundred dollar bill & needless to say, it was sublime. I didn't have enough sense at the time to put any aside and because it tasted so good & mellow, what did I do? That's right! Smoked it all up in no time... seemed like it only took about two or three weeks to burn it all up. I think back what they might be worth today... priceless! I still had several new tins in the cellar, so, I really did a number on the old stuff. Read Less

Ribbon-necessary to cut into small pieces to make filling easier. Burns rather slowly but tends to leave more tar in the pipe and wet residue. Tongue bite is there and can reduce the pleasure a bit. Okay for occasional use...

Perique presence that isn't overdone. GL Peases Navigator reintroduced me to the fold and stuff method, and I'm not looking back. Sometimes we need a reminder to slow things down and relax, and since this is a basic tenet of pipe smoking it is something we should always keep in mind. The benefit to slowing down scales disproportionately between blends, but in general Virginia and dark fired blends benefit greatly from a slower cadence, and the same is true for Escudo. One thing that's nice about Escudo is that it tastes pretty good fresh out of the tin. It tastes even better with a little age, getting deeper with just a little time. Also, though im praising the flavor with the fold and stuff method, it still tastes great when rubbed out and it really comes down to preference. I'm just really into folding and stuffing right now. For my tastes, Escudo is up there in terms of flavor and flavor profile, and when combined with overall availability of this blend I think it should not be ignored if you enjoy VA/per blends. Opening a tin now I find a pruney sweetness and the perique has tamed a bit - replacing some of the pepper with depth and a dash of a taste that I can only describe as oatmeal with brown sugar. ew minutes but it becomes more of a medium as the bowl starts to progress and very low in nicotine. I don't normally eat breakfast and this is fine on an empty stomach. Between how great it tastes and smokes it is the breakfast of champions for me. I find it does the best in a smaller pipe. I get so much flavor out of this and I don't get the pepper from the perique like I get in many vapers, just pure goodness that hints more of figs and citrus. Only thing that could be better if the volume of smoke was a little more but it's still one of the tastiest vapers out there. I like how the flavors are there in perfect harmony but there are layers of subtle flavors that seem to hit you in every puff once it gets going good. There's not enough strength or fullness of flavor to satisfy me in the evening or especially after a meal, But that's exactly why it's so perfect for my mornings when some other blends would be too strong. is based on the presently available edition.
Neatly arranged Curly Cut discs and flavourful smell of Virginia-hay and fruity Perique out of the tin. Moisture is on the damp side, some may want to give it a short drying time. For me it’s ok to smoke straight out of the tin. I do not rub it out, I break and stuff the coins into my pipe for best results. Cool and excellent burning conditions. First class selection of robust Virginias, without being too strong. Typical Virginia flavours with a distinct note of earth. I miss a fuller development of the Virginia flavours though. In the second half of the bowl the Perique becomes more obviously present, eventually taking the lead towards the end.
ESCUDO NAVY DE LUXE is obviously a sibling of DE LUXE NAVY ROLLS. Both are manufactured by STG Scandinavian Tobacco Group, by the way. It is very interesting to compare these two! You will find many subtle differences. But I am not going into this here.
No doubt, ESCUDO NAVY DE LUXE is a high end Va/Per generally deserving 4 stars. I personally prefer mixtures with a fuller aroma from the Virginias and I’d also prefer to have the aromas of Perique released more regularly from the beginning on. Read Less

ted the coins and counted out 26 coins,in contrast to an earlier reviewer who only found 17 or so. I guess it depends on the thickness of the cut of the coins. The coins are about the size of a 50 cent piece. Here's the important part: It is a dream to smoke. Sure, it may take a few lights to get it lit and keep it going, but this is one premier smoke. You can easily get an hour out of each coin. This is a very smooth tobacco in the bowl. There's no bite - if you're patient. The only reason I did not give it 5 full stars is I believe that the price point is higher than, say, Samuel Gawith's Cabbie's Mixture (see my review of Feb 12). If you haven't tried Escudo, I believe you're really missing out. Read Less

h a bit of peppery spiceyness, yet mild enough to smoke all day, every day.
If I weren't such a wandering soul, I'd just smoke this, every day, all day.
Other's are close, and some are almost as good and cheaper but for me, this is the best I've found in VA/Per. Even compared to the venerable Three Nuns, I prefer Escudo, it's a little milder and after completing a full tin of Three Nun's, I'd have to say it at times can be harsh. Read Less

This is a very good anytime smoke. It has a nice grassy Virginia flavor and a good dark fruit flavor from the perique. Jar some up and give it some time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good fresh but taste even better with some age.

As with any Virginia forward blend, pacing is important to ward off tongue bite, but I’ve found this blend to be remarkably forgiving on that front. Escudo is easily one of my favorite smokes. It’s good fresh or with age on it. That being said I would still get extra tins to hide away for a few years. I would definitely recommend this blend.

very sweet and peppery notes coming from the bowl. I immediately associate the bowl note with the aroma that hits me the moment I walk into my local pipe and cigar store. All that is topped off with a sweet, robust and pleasantly tangy retrohale that tickles the nostrils.

Everywhere I read it says this is the VA to have and what not. I prefer Orlik, I also prefer Dunhills Light VA over this, and even C&D briar fox. But this is certainly as good as all the rest.

Its sweet, bready, dried fruity tangy goodness with a nice spicy under tone that gives this a little kick! Less then two coins are necessary to load the bowl. It's very easy to softly grind the coins between the finger.
The blend burns easy and cool.
After the first lit the tobacco needs some time to develop. During the first third of the bowl a sweetness and figgy taste and smell increases. Middle third of the bowl – delightful: more sweetness, more fig and a wonderful taste and smell of freshly baked crusty bread straight from the oven combined with some other roasted notes and a creaminess. Last third of the bowl: more creaminess around me and a more spicy taste.
No tongue bite!
The bowl could be perfectly finished leaving a grey-white ash with only little dottle in the heel.
Hours after having finished the bowl I still have a very pleasant sweet taste on my palate.
This is really one of my favourite blends. (I like VaPers anyway.) Read Less

First of all I am just starting and before pipe smoking I only smoked cigars. That said, the taste note of this tin is the closest i have tasted to the notes that appear on a cigar. So for me it is highly recommended.

This is often billed as the gold standard for VaPers, and I'd have to agree. It's really nice, can be smoked any time, and the coin presentation means it's consistent bowl to bowl.
Just wish it were a bit cheaper, or sold in bulk.

should be no more than a year! Recommends to fluff up the tobacco rings and let them lie down a little "breathe air" before stuffing into the tube. Already at this moment in the air there is a slight smell of Virginia with notes of fresh hay and a pleasant aroma of Perique. In a fluffed form, the tobacco is perfectly packed (do not clot too much).
The mix tastes like "damn good", ripe Virginia in the right portion and flavored with Perique. This mixture does not forgive hot smoking. With proper, thoughtful smoking, the taste is great, as soon as the rate of smoking increases, Perique immediately makes itself felt with its bite and Virginia with its bitterness.
This tobacco blend is definitely great made for the seasoned pipe smoker.
For the sample, I specially chose a tube with a small bowl. It seems to me a good combination with Vinche shell grain, Straight Panel Pot. Read Less

This tobacco had a slightly sweet ashy note as it burned. I smoked it in many different pipes and meerschaums. Still, it always tasted like a high quality cigarette. I thought it was nasty.
