About This Pipe Tobacco

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

Salty Dogs is, as its name implies, a classic Navy-style plug: Virginias and a pinch of Perique, flavored with rum, and pressed tight into hard, pocket-sized blocks. It hearkens to how many sailors would transport tobacco, the dense plugs preserving the tobaccos' moisture content and allowing smokers to cut flakes as-needed during long, ocean voyages.

A top 4 for me

For anyone needing a good method for smoking this I'll give mine that I've used for about a decade now. Grab a cheese grater, mind your fingers and grate you a bowl off. Do not let it dry, rum burns just fine and relights are actually a pleasant thing with this tobacco. I have a sav 121 ks solely for this tobacco because a large diameter bowl works well for the flavor. Sprinkle the fine shavings just enough to get a about a 1/4 bowl full and then vigorously but softly tap the bowl to let it find its own tamp. Do this 3 to 4 times until you have a 3/4 to 2/3 full bowl. Do not push the tobacco at all, or you'll think your trying to suck a frosty through a straw. On your char light be aggressive and get a good char, give it the lightest tamp you've ever done and then light and enjoy. When you think it might be going out instead of giving puffs give a quick easy light and it'll be like the first light of the bowl oddly enough. This stuff ages so good so if you can afford I recommend putting some back for 10 years, future you will thank you. The price sucks these days but what can ya do...Read More

This blend was amazing when it was 14-16 dollars, but at the baffling 28 dollars it's currently going for, two stars is the highest I can go.

Seriously good stuff. I get a deep rich flavors of vanilla, which I'm guessing is from the rum, some sort of caramel, and figs all playing together like perfect pre schoolers. Used a cigar cutter to get thin stips and let them dry for around 5 minutes packed my pipe and let that sit for another 10 minutes. The flavors popped out instantly and remained there the entire bowl. A few charing lights and a real light and I never had to light it again. Just amazing 👏...Read More

Very good dense plug. Fantastic flavors and blend quality but I couldn't not bring myself to enjoy it often at the current price.
Not the most enjoyable...

Not the most enjoyable...especially for its price point of $258.00/lb...or (with an average of 19 bowls per 50g) $1.50/bowl. Granted this is a rating given after but a handful of bowls. But I cannot yet rate it, even, 'good' for a few reasons. One; not found to be enjoyable...it's very mild and hardly has any taste/flavor. It's hit-or-miss, so to speak, and seems to be a tiny bit better in larger/wider bowls. Two; dry-time affects its taste quite a bit. It's most rewarding, so far, when dried very little, if any, and falls flat when dried too long. Three; it seemingly performs better, also, when not snuggly packed (leaving it loose for additional airflow) Four; its price. And for costing more than double of most of my favorites, I expected more from 'Salty Dogs'. I will say my first bowl was quite tasty and I intend to duplicate all I can recall from the first. So to have another rewarding bowl in the same manner. But, as you might do, I went and tried modifying the steps one takes to see if it can be even more rewarding. Only this has not happened, and it's been all downhill since the first. So if new to this blend...try your preferred slice and load method. Do not allow it to dry much; if any. And finally...take note of when and how it delivers! All so you can repeat when you discover its "sweet-spot." I'll *Update* this review as necessary....Read More
