Dan Tobacco: Salty Dogs 50g Pipe Tobacco

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

Salty Dogs is, as its name implies, a classic Navy-style plug: Virginias and a pinch of Perique, flavored with rum, and pressed tight into hard, pocket-sized blocks. It hearkens to how many sailors would transport tobacco, the dense plugs preserving the tobaccos' moisture content and allowing smokers to cut flakes as-needed during long, ocean voyages.

Cuts easy for me smoke it with no dry time. For me it stays lit well lots of fig,plum notes smokes cool no bite on it at all. Slow burning I get an hour to a hour and a half with a small bowl. Bold but not too bold.👌 first class tobacco. I think one plug will provide many hours of enjoyment. Well, finally bit the bullet and bought a couple pouches/plugs of the old Salty Dog. Excited to work with and smoke this VaPer, I shaved off the needed amount, rubbed it out to a near shag consistency, and filled the newly acquired Old German clay pipe. I must say this blend is quite the treat as it hit the spot for me. The smoke was powerful, yet creamy and smooth, and it made its presence known in the gut (good for me). I’m terrible at describing different flavor characteristics in blends, so I won’t even lie about what I tasted. I will tell you this though, Salty Dogs is a damn fine VaPer that I fully intend to have on hand at all times! It is far above what I prefer to pay per ounce, but it is well worth the splurge. This is definitely in my top ten list for best va-per! It checks all the right boxes for me! The pouch note is an awesome fruity, rum scent. The plug is a deep, dark, rich, almost black in color. Due to the density, you need to rub out enough to fill your pipe, and, let it dry for about an hour. Once lit, you are rewarded a sublime, raisin/plum from the highest quality perique and virginia's, with scrumptious rum flavor😋! It's also extremely smooth and bite free. I guarantee that it's definitely worth the extra effort of preparing this style of tobacco! Despite the price seeming high, the reward of smoking this is worth every penny! Three years ago, I purchased a pouch of Salty Dogs and I was not impressed. I tried various forms when cutting it down to smoke and it was a cloud of hot unflavored smoke. I gave up on it, put it away, three years later, the delicious aroma coming from the mason jar was irresistible. The experience while slicing the plug was enjoyable. It was sweet, sticky and aromatic. The smoke was very enjoyable. The sweet fruity flavors, full smoke, was exceptional. I'm stocking up as soon as this tobacco becomes available again. While I have smoked a pipe for nearly 50 years, somehow I never got the opportunity to try a Dan tobacco. When I saw it was in stock just last week I decided to try a few blends by them, Salty Dog being one that I chose. I winced a bit when I realized it was twenty bucks for a 50 g package, but I was intrigued by the description and it was one of the Dan tobaccos that I chose. While I love VaPers, and Navy blends I didn’t know what to expect. I opened the package and saw the tiny dense brick and thought, wow!……not much tobacco for $20……it better be good! Loaded a bowl, and started smoking just before I started writing this. Oh My God!!! What an incredible tobacco!!! I cut into thin flakes then rubbed it out and dry. Packed into a a Dunhill bruyere size 3 and smoked. At first, there was nothing much so I was kinda disappointed. After getting into 2/3 of the pipe, the flavors emerge. Hay like, slightly spicy and deep. Beautiful beautiful taste. But sip in small puffs as I find the nic hit deceptive because it was delicious. This one takes a bit of work. I love that it’s a true plug (close to rocks in density). I’ve tried cubes, slices, and thoroughly rubbing it out. Rubbing the tobacco out seems to bring out more flavor. Though it’s hard and feels dry, the moisture seems to return once rubbed out. It’s a light smoke, smooth and tasty.
