haunt my taste memory all day and make me want to return to it. I've not had the same first light sensation with any tobacco since. HOWEVER, I did find it to be a tad finicky getting and keep lit optimally. Not all bowls were consistently good (as I said, first light and first half of bowl seemed the best) and it seemed to have lost almost all taste once it got past a certain age. Still, it was one of my first tobacco and I think if I handle the next batch better my experience will be even more consistently great! :):):):) Thanks MuttonChop for the recommendation! Read Less

s to the mixture reminiscent of roasted chestnuts. This is a brilliantly sophisticated, well balanced, very tasty, and tremendously satisfying blend. The only drawback is; that it required a lot of dry time and several relights. It’s almost as if the tobacco was dipped into, what I believe to be, a mild ginger casing, like you would for a plug cut, rather than being sprayed on. That said, 40 minutes of dry time and a light hand when packing, at least in the tin I got, and your good to go. Read Less

ltese Falcon exclusively.
Latakia supporting an Oriental forward blend with Virginias in tandem. Smooth, smokey, sweet like honey, bold flavor, yet subtle spice and bread notes; in revolving harmony. I don’t care what they say, the elusive “flue cured” spice is akin to Perique in a robust sense at times; when it fades to the background it’s definitely ginger. I find first third to present the Smokey savory qualities, the second third to be mostly sweet, and the final third to be a bready culmination of the previous parts. The spice creeps in and out being more present throughout the bowl on the retro hale. A truly masterful contemplative blend. It’s cool and pleasant smoke calls for a large bowl to enjoy an hour or more of the seamless transitions. Pairs nicely with tea and honey (currently drinking a Bourbon Chestnut tea from Gatlinburg with a little honey) and maybe a couple pieces of chocolate, depending on your mood.
If you’ve been smoking the variety premium pipe tobacco for some time, I encourage you to treat and challenge your pallet. If you’d like to try an English for the first time, this may the best start and might, perhaps, be more of a Balkan than an English in my opinion.
I am now building a surplus of Maltese Falcon as to avoid running out before my time is over. I will continue to delve into this complexity by acquiring another briar, a meerschaum, and maybe a Morta; all dedicated to Maltese Falcon. This blend is everything I hoped to find in the hobby of pipe smoking and I have only come appreciate it as I try other blends and give each time a little more time before trying. I can assume what five years in the cellar will offer. Read Less

ltese Falcon is, pardon the pun, a bit of a tease. there is a bit of sweetness when first opening the tin--think that may be the flue-cured having its way.
The sweetness then takes a backseat to the Latakia and the Red Virginia, playing in with the orientals in a bit of minor key. The author of the description is correct, this can be an all-day tobacco, it is that good and that gentle.

t smokier in flavor, though it never tastes ashy. The Orientals shine through more than the Virginia, too. The whole is helped along by the scent in the tin and flavor in the palate of ginger. The ginger leaves a faint tingle in the mouth as a parting gift.
If you are sensitive to ginger, as I am, this is not ideal: it definitely takes this blend off the "all day" list. One bowl is enough to satisfy, though two or three bowls has never bitten me. But there are limits.
The tobacco came a little wet, but that has helped it stay fresh in the tin. It packs well without drying, burns without a care in the world, and does not spike temperature if you puff on it a little. The smoke is full and smooth, but not as creamy as Blackpoint. It burns down to a fine white ash at the finish and leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth.
All in all, this is a desirable change of pace for an English smoker, and it may even satisfy some aromaticons as well.

the cellar. Maltese Falcon is best fresh out of the tin, as are most blends that come in the American style of tin (especially c&d). As Greg Pease says, when you first open a tin, a delicate ecosystem has been exposed, and some of the more volatile and delicate particles, whether from the topping or aging process, will fade within a short period of time( I'm paraphrasing here). Whatever light topping that's added does fade with time, and gives a nice sweetness and spice that the description points out, but it is still a fantastic English smoke without that distinct flavor. Actually, with 6 months of age I found new life in this blend, and similar sweetness provided by the aging Virginia tobacco's. Many will likely disagree but with a little age on it Maltese Falcon has many similarities with Dunhills Nightcap for me. Obviously there is no perique in Maltese Falcon, but there is a subtle spice that doesn't fade with time, and a pleasant sweetness that I associate with aged nightcap. Nightcap is also stronger. Maltese Falcon is a medium strength English with a lot of style, and robust flavor for it's strength, and the fact that it can be smoked several times per day by the seasoned smoker grants it extra points for me. From first light to last puff I am always looking at my bowl, awestruck by how masterfully this English is blended. In my humble opinion, Greg Pease is "The" master of English blends and Maltese Falcon is just another top shelf addition to an already impressive lineup of GL Pease's English blends. Fantastic! Product: G. L. Pease Maltese Falcon 2oz
Not great to say the least. My tin was quite dry, the tin note had me really excited, didn't smoke to my expectations. Irritatingly enough, as dry as it was - wouldn't stay lit. Oh well, more to try out there.
After a handful of bowls I tossed the ... Read More

No knock on the quality. It's made well, maybe a bad tin. But the blend itself isn't an award winner. Pretty average and definitely not worth the price. Read Less

It definitely has a distinct spicy/sweet English flavor. I liked it for about half the tin. After that it made me crave my Virginias more and more. Ultimately it made me a Virginia fan and I stocked up with Dunhill Flake. MF is too rich for my tastes... Read More

pipe moment on next to no notice, you have to sit there and watch it dry for a good while before it's the right dampness. Then you don't feel like a pipe anymore.
I've read though that the dampness is purposeful, to make it store well, so I guess its worth it. Would be interesting in a few years.

When I first opened a tin of Maltese Falcon I was not very impressed with the smell. It came somewhat damp like all Pease blends tend to be, so I let a pinch dry out for a few hours until it was smokable. Like the initial smell I was not impressed.... Read More
I let this tin sit on the shelf for a while and came back to it. Now I'm impressed. The flavor is very subtle yet distinguished. The second half of the bowl is thick and almost creamy. Very earthy with a leathery taste. A great smoke, but like I said its subtle. No over the top flavors here. Highly recommended. Read Less
