Ashbury begins with a base of excellent Red and Bright Virginia tobaccos. Generous portions of small-leaf Oriental tobaccos provide a fullness and spice that give this blend it's wonderfully exotic taste and aroma. Finally, Pease adds a small measure of the finest Cyprus Latakia, providing deeper notes, hints of leather and campfire, and a refined finish to the smoke. Yes, it is mild, but the flavor has an almost malty sweetness, the orientals are not sour, but more "woody". This is always welcomed. The Latakia is present but subdued.
A wonderful blend for the evening, or afternoon.

Tin note of sweet, smoky, and raisins. Tobacco is a relative dry ribbon of brown and small amounts of tan, and even smaller amount of black. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is mild and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild and inconsistent, with notes of buttery, herbal vegetation, musty leather, floral, mild smoke, sour citrus, mild sweet grass, earth, bitter wood, and a mostly smooth retro. Orientals tend to lead with Virginias supporting, Latakias is present, but not too active. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is ok....Read More

Ashbury is a middle-English mixture that could be an all-day. I like the flavor profile, though I don't often detect the "leather" that others do. The problem is that this blend is not particularly memorable, and doesn't really stand out in the sea of all-day English mixtures. Comfortable yet Distinguished

There's a traditionalism and sophistication conveyed with Ashbury, traits which distinguishes it from the louder and more modern products that can overwhelm the tongue with Latakia. Ashbury is a departure from the dark-flavored, heavy latakia English mixtures we encounter today, and so Ashbury conveys a comforting lightness befitting of an all-day English mixture. Although lighter, it's a remarkably refined mixture which is richly aesthetic and generously flavored. It possesses a more pronounced Virginia flavor, slightly less Oriental and just a pinch of Latakia. The Orientals support the dominant VA and are redolent with a woody, verdant/floral incense. They are slightly piquant and savory. The dominant Virginias are of extremely high quality and reveal a soft pastry like sweetness with occasional sparks of sugary bright citrus to counter the dark, creamy, leathery, cedar-laden smoky Latakia, which is applied very sparingly. This light-handed application of Latakia complements the latter components so well, and it's this balance against the Virginias which reveal the expert hand in blending and allows for back to back bowls without overwhelming. Save you the trouble

My father had a hutch in the foyer of the house. A valet with cuff links, tie pins, money clips, wallet, and old Seth Thomas and American Watch Co. pocket watches passed down. A box of old pocket knives, a bowl with keys, and a pipe rack and tobacco. When he passed, all of it went into boxes. I recently opened one and found, among other things, 3 unopened tins of Sullivan and Powell Gentleman's Mixture. A quick search led me here. I'll save you some trouble if you're curious, Ashbury is the better blend. Sweet, buttery, and smoky with a wonderful light floral note just in the background. There are many reviews out there disparaging of this blend. Too mild, not Balkan enough, a starter blend, too much of a compromise, etc.

This is one of my favorite Pease blends. A very distinctive taste and smell. The only downside was the tin I received was cut pretty rough...a few "twigs" to remove. The smell and taste makes me think of someone puffing while listening to Jack Kerouac reading in the City Lights Bookstore or maybe a jazz-cat in a dark SF nightclub. I plan on smoking this while in the great outdoors....contemplative thought while surrounded by douglas firs. Highly recommended....Read More
