About This Pipe Tobacco

For their Kajun Kake, the folks at Cornell & Diehl start with naturally sweet Red Virginias and add just the right touch of everyone's favorite Cajun spice, Louisiana Perique. They then press it into an old-fashioned crumble cake which deepens and marries the flavors.

Disappointing. Low-quality perique.

I’m a notoriously easy rater here, with multiple five-star ratings. I try to rate things on what they’re supposed to be, rather than just what I like. But here, I’m a perique-lover, and this is supposed to be a perique bomb. And that’s exactly where this falls flat. First, the positives that kept this from being a one-star. Nice presentation, beautiful cake. Loads, lights, and burns easily. Typical, prodigious perique smoke. But it still doesn’t taste very smoky, and worse, only the mildest of typical perique spice is present, despite the high perique content. Many condiment perique applications in expensive blends have perique spice that comes through stronger. I doubt aging will help much here. Not so bad I won’t smoke it, but it’s hopelessly bland. Light smoky flavor, light spice, and the dominant flavor is of a burnt leather boot sole that’s been out in the rain....Read More
Dark, sweet, deep plummy flavor.

Regardless if you are a VaPer fiend o r a tourist this blend is like a portal. It's a doorway to the rich deep prune-like flavors so often promised but this takes it to a depth heretofore rarely visited. The first third of the bowl is a bit airy but then it gets going and it develops into a jammy bath of plum or even prune like flavor in fact I think prune is a better word than plum it's got that concentrated flavour with a darkness. It is in no way sugary or cloying it is even keeled and masterfully crafted. This tobacco really deserves a more visible profile. It's rather wet but crumbles and flakes easily. it does fine in any pipe. Sipping is just as satisfying as deep drags. There's a spiciness that comes in that's not overbearing it's just right and it comes in on the top and back end of the smoke. The whole experience morphs from hot air to ripe, smoky orchard to premium cigar with a jammy twist. Update: if feels like this is gonna be a really interesting deep cellar. I've tried cellaring everything deeply and been bitterly disappointed with certain blends that just don't run the distance like St James flake, Royal yacht, Dunhill dark flake all super failures. Each one relied on the flavored casing or just mediocre tobacco and failed over 7 or more years. Other blends have aged legendary like Peter stokkeby luxury Navy flake, Geometrie, and pretty much anything from McClelland. This, Kajun Kake feels like it's going to do very well. Thanks to whoever blended this....Read More

Sweet red and deep/dark Virginia bready flavor with Perique spice and figgy undertones.
Cake(kake) is gorgeous deep brown & breaks/tears and packs easily. Moisture out of tin is always perfect. Smokes easily and fully.
Simple perfection.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Kajun Kake 8oz
Time on deck is 10:27, 2nd of November, 2024. Just opened a three year old jarred whole square of Kajun Kake. Still had plenty of moisture, in a positive way. Smoked in a Savinelli Roma 804 KS. Verdict: Already a tasty favorite new, the age was worth the wait. The Cavendish, in a new tin, is quite good with smoothing the sharp edges of the Virginia; in the aged batch, the edge doesn't exist. An easy cadence develops the Perique much earlier, leaving the smoker with a smooth, figgy, musty feel, where consistent flashes of citrus color the overall experience. Primarily a Burley smoker....Read More
