Exhilarating and elusive, quaint and seductive. Prepared from choice Red Virginias, dusted with Latakia, and heavily flavored with Orientals, giving it a red tinge. It burns in the pipe with the spontaneity of a fine cigar.

Robust but tasty

This is only my second English blend I've tried, so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but this blend smells and tastes great. Seems to burn cool. I look forward to trying this in cooler weather because it's almost too strong for my taste in warm weather. This tobacco is very robust and can be overwhelming to your senses (in taste and in nic) if you aren't prepared for it....Read More

I'm told this is Scottish. It burns very nicely, I think the oriental and Cavendish make for a very nice smoke that's rather easy on the mouth. This can hit the spot if you want a full English flavor but also be an afternoon or warmer weather smoke. I do however have an issue very similar to Peterson 965 where sometimes or perhaps in some pipes it just seems off and tastes wrong. That's just a peculiarity though, it's worth trying....Read More
Unique Blend

Product: Rattray's Red Rapparee 100g
One of the finest English blends on the market today. I lean a bit more toward classifying RR as a Balkan rather than just an English blend due to the strong influence of the Oriental element (non-Latakia). But at the same time the Latakia presence is a bit more than you might find in any number of blends classified as a Balkan. I'm not sure that a classification really matters--not everything fits in a pigeon hole. I've been smoking Red Rapparee (RR) since the 70s--that's when it was still produced in Perth, Scotland. The flavor is faithful to my memory of the original with the exception of a bit more sweetness. Balkan Orientals on top, Virginias in support as the base, a pretty fair amount of Latakia and a bit of Black Cavendish to add sweetness and perhaps a little more depth. That's basically how my palate interprets this blend. Deserves 3-4 out of 10 for strength and 6 out of 10 for flavor. I can be a little old-fashioned in my views; I am always torn by the inclusion of Black Cavendish in what should be a quality blend. I often find that Black Cavendish "cheapens" a blend--it functions more as a filler. But sometimes its inclusion does help to expand the blend's flavor profile. With RR I consider the inclusion of Black Cavendish to be an enhancement offering a slight improvement over the original. The tobaccos meld together in a wonderful manner resulting in great flavor. It's certainly possible to spend more, but I think it's difficult to find better. Even though prices have increased, Rattray's blends continue to be worth the price....Read More

Product: Rattray's Red Rapparee 50g
Smoking Rattray’s Red Rapparee in my Rattray pipe. Love this gorgeous mixture that I would term Scottish, being oriental forward. Finishing my third bowl, it’s one of the few that takes me away from my Dark Flake Aromatic. I can meditate on the hills of Scotland, or the incense of John Knox’s Church. Or see with the same eye that God sees me. Some blends just take one away…...Read More
