I could definitely smoke this blend all day. I purchased 2 tins. Already smoked one and the other is cellared away for a later date. I will be buying more to keep in the rotation and add to the cellar. Thumbs up from me.
My first non-aromatic

A B&M recommended this to me when I asked for a non-aromatic tobacco. I will be forever indebted to them.

The dark-fired in this blend gives so much weight and body to the sweetness of the VA and pepper of the perique. It's satisfying and relaxing. heavier than Golden Slices so the sweetness
isn't as bright as other VaPers. The tin note is raisins and figs and the smoke remains true to that impression. The richness of the DFK really moves the sweetness from sugar to more of a molasses vibe. It smokes cool but could get out of hand if you're not paying attention. I recommend trying it if you haven't or are curious....Read More

A new favorite

Picked up a tin of this because the shop was out of what I'd gone in for, I've never been so happy for a shop to be out of the blend I wanted. I knew as soon as I opened this I had found something special, the smell of buttered toast and hay hinted at what was to come as I delightfully packed my pipe. A week and a half later I was back at the same shop picking up another two tins, one to smoke and one to cellar (I'd completely smoked through that first tin in that time.) I now have over half a dozen aging away happily in my cellar, and plan to add even more to that number. When I discovered this blend, I discovered my new favorite....Read More
Outstanding, no nonsense, tobacco blend

Product: McConnell Scottish Cake 50g
After about 3 years of smoking a pipe, I started stocking up on this stuff since it has a tendency to disappear for a while. The tin note is nothing fancy, just pure delicious tobacco. The loose cut makes it smoke extremely well mechanically with little drying time. The flavor is a rich dark fruit with a little kick from the perique. The dark fired burley adds just enough toasty flavor to round it out perfectly. Smokes great, tastes great, a perfect medium strength no nonsense tobacco....Read More

I’ve bought hundreds of different blends and yet never had McConnell’s brand for some reason. I have been into Scottish blends lately but they’re generally an English base. This one had great reviews and I love Virginias, lately with some orientals as well. I finally grabbed a tin and I already have added 4 more to my cart for the next round of spending money secretly. I won’t bother going into flavors etc as there’s plenty out there. I’m not disappointed at all and this to me, seems that it would age very well too. That said, it’s great right out of the tin. This one dated about 1 year....Read More
Still Not a Fan

Product: McConnell Scottish Cake 50g
For my evening pipe I was looking for a blend with these components -- Virginia, Perique, Dark Fired Kentucky -- so I reached for my jar of McConnell Scottish Cake, but it's still not doing much for me. It's mellow enough yet still has some kick, which is nice, but it doesn't have much flavor. With perique and DFK I always expect a flavor-bomb. Stewed fruits and umami spice from the perique, smokey robustness from the DFK, darkly sweet grass and hay from the dark Virginias. I'm just not getting those from MSC. It could be the pipe, a Peterson 150, perhaps a bit too shallow and not narrow enough to let the Virginias do their thing, but somehow I doubt it....Read More

Second Robert McConnell I test, and as the 1st one, it was a nice surprise. I thought it will be sweeter because of the name, but it was very pleasant to smoke. The kentucky and perique are there increasing the strength of the blend, and obtaining a well-balanced tobacco. It burns very well and produces a nice and pleasant long smoke....Read More
Smooth Sweet and a Bit Tangy with a bit of Spice.

Product: McConnell Scottish Cake 50g
Not bad. The invert sugar sweetens this artificially but is tolerable for me; the plummy tanginess of the perique is there but lacks the black pepper spice; the Kentucky is supportive and lends only a slight nuance of spicy, smoky oak on the back end, but make no mistake... it's there and it adds a good bit of nicotine. My guess is it's African and not American. It's smooth enough to smoke all day and the lingering artificial sweetness keeps the ashy aftertaste away. Kohlhase Kopp is known for adding sugar, and that artificial sweetness can sometimes sublimate the natural nuance we get from VA. The Dark VA used in this is on the woody side. Added sugar isn't a bad thing, but I prefer the more rustic and natural flavor of Cornell and Diehl. Nicotine is 3 out of 5....Read More

I've smoked and loved the flake version of this, this rubbed version is good but not as good as the flake.
