McConnell does a superb job in crafting this blend. For starters, the tin note is refreshing; pure tobacco. I also like the feel of it in the hand; it crumbles nicely, and isn't too moist. I like burley mixed in with other leaf, and feel the geograph... Read More
ical gathering of these tobaccos are the key to Scottish Cake's uniqueness. Tough to come by unfortunately. I had to pick my tin up last time I visited Iwan Ries. Highly recommended. Read Less
Not for me

I love Vapers and those that contain burley as well. This tobacco violates my palate and leaves my mouth feeling like I have eaten a whole raw pineapple for some reason. I am pretty sure it has some kind of nasty topping on it, it reminds me of batte... Read More
ry acid for some reason. I gave it to a friend who says he likes it ok if he smokes it mega slow but I'd try at least one tin before you buy too much like I did. Just because it is similar to other tobaccos I really enjoy in it's basic components does not mean it is either blended well or a good smoke. Read Less

A very good straight up tobacco Flavor, Sweet virginia’s and mild Perique! I have had this and a tin of the “Scottish Flake” and if I had to choose between the two I would say I enjoyed this one more. More sweetness that I enjoy and slight spice fro... Read More

Smooth Sweet and a Bit Tangy with a bit of Spice.

Product: McConnell Scottish Cake 50g
Not bad. The invert sugar sweetens this artificially but is tolerable for me; the plummy tanginess of the perique is there but lacks the black pepper spice; the Kentucky is supportive and lends only a slight nuance of spicy, smoky oak on the back en... Read More
d, but make no mistake... it's there and it adds a good bit of nicotine. My guess is it's African and not American. It's smooth enough to smoke all day and the lingering artificial sweetness keeps the ashy aftertaste away. Kohlhase Kopp is known for adding sugar, and that artificial sweetness can sometimes sublimate the natural nuance we get from VA. The Dark VA used in this is on the woody side. Added sugar isn't a bad thing, but I prefer the more rustic and natural flavor of Cornell and Diehl. Nicotine is 3 out of 5. Read Less

I've smoked and loved the flake version of this, this rubbed version is good but not as good as the flake.

Has quickly jumped ahead in my rotation when I am looking for a VaPer. Yes, there is burley, but its subtle enough where I do not really notice it

I am quite taken by this blend. Rich and earthy, it has a "woodsy" quality to to, like being out and about on an early fall day. To my taste, the burley predominates, and it burns to a clean ash leaving my pipes virtually dry. However, this has a bit... Read More
of "oomph" to it, so I don't think I'll be smoking this during a hot, humid summer. This blend caused me to look over the rest of the McConnell line, and I have a tin of the RDV aging in the cellar. Read Less

For my evening pipe I was looking for a blend with these components -- Virginia, Perique, Dark Fired Kentucky -- so I reached for my jar of McConnell Scottish Cake, but it's still not doing much for me. It's mellow enough yet still has some kick, whi... Read More
ch is nice, but it doesn't have much flavor. With perique and DFK I always expect a flavor-bomb. Stewed fruits and umami spice from the perique, smokey robustness from the DFK, darkly sweet grass and hay from the dark Virginias. I'm just not getting those from MSC. It could be the pipe, a Peterson 150, perhaps a bit too shallow and not narrow enough to let the Virginias do their thing, but somehow I doubt it. Read Less

Tin notes of figs, grass and a sweet vanilla like smell. The broken flakes are an orangish brown and slightly moist, drying not necessary. Some chunks may need further rubbing out, but mostly no prep needed. Burns slow with few relights. The strength... Read More
is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected despite tin note. The taste is medium and somewhat inconsistent. I taste notes of sweet bread, Rasin, wood, grass, slightly floral and a little pepper on the retro. Virginias leads with Kentuckey providing backup, The perique seems to linger in the background. Room note is pleasant to tolerable and has a good after taste. Read Less

The first several times I smoked this, I was not crazy about it. But it has grown on me and now I quite enjoy it. Burns cool, no bite, and stays lit even though it comes a bit wet in the tin. Good, flavorful anytime tobacco with just enough nuance to... Read More
be interesting. Burns clean down to the bottom of the bowl and a decent kick of nicotine but not overpowering. More of a slow crescendo. Closer to a ribbon cut than a broken flake and it burns a little faster than I would like, but that’s personal preference; I prefer flakes for the slower burn. Similar to Royal Yacht and C&D’s Five o’clock Shadow. If you like either of those, you will probably like this. Read Less

The Virginias here are very smooth, and not as quite as sugary as the tin note would suggest. While I couldn't initially smell the Kentucky, I can definitely taste it. There is a subtle Kentucky tang that interplays fantastically with the Virginias. ... Read More
Again, the Kentucky here is more of a supporting act - not quite as overt as those of, say, GL Pease's Cumberland.
By mid-bowl, this blend really shines. All of the flavors merge so harmoniously: sweet Virginias, tangy Kentucky, plummy Perique. Despite being tinned on the wet side, after some dry time and by mid-bowl, Scottish Cake delivers thick clouds of creamy smoke with absolutely no bite. Unlike many sipper's blends, Scottish Cake is very forgiving of heavy puffers. I should add that despite the initially moist tobacco, after some dry time this blend burned straight through after a charring and then true light, with only one re-light required.
Interestingly, in the final third of the bowl there are some peppery notes from the Perique. This is one of those rare blends that showcases both sides of the Perique flavor spectrum: stewed fruit at the onset and a hint of spice towards the close. But as much as the Kentucky and Perique add to this blend, the real stars in my opinion are the Virginias. You just can't make a great VaPer or VaBurPer blend without smooth, kind Virginias.
Overall, this is a very smooth and harmonious blend with the constituent tobaccos each playing their part flawlessly. Those diehard VaPer aficionados should be aware, however, that this is a relatively mild Perique blend. And that's ok: not every VaPer needs to be a "Perique bomb". This is simply a superb blend showcasing what a talented blender is capable of: balance, flavor, subtlety, and creamy deliciousness. Read Less

slices are easy to rub out or to fold-and-sink, either way it's a cool smoke. The flavour starts out sweet, with plum and figs in there, Red VA sweetness, somewhat honey-ish, a little spice... the flavour does not change overly much during the smoke, but there are all these nuances popping up in between, simply beautiful.
Lights up well from the fresh tin for me, burns slowly, coolly, uncomplicatedly, and leaves no dottle when rubbed out. This blend has a wonderful aftertaste that lingers on for a good while, reminding me of the wonderful smoke I had. Read Less
