Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 50g
This is my first bowl from a 2 year old tin. Im in love. Fresh bread, cream, and just the right amount of pepper from the perique. Very little tongue bite, so slow it down a bit for this one. The tin note smelled like vinegar and spinach, which was odd, because they flavor is nothing like it smells. All around a great Virginia flake. No complaints....Read More
This Might be a 5 Star...

I am reviewing this after only 1 bowl, so there is a chance that subsequent use might not be as high, but for now it is a wow. I had to keep reminding myself this was not an aromatic. Slightly sweet and earthy, perhaps nutty, but the dominant note was that of baking bread. Again, this is a first impression. Perhaps this will change after subsequent firings. This has moved into my top 5 list of tobaccos. After over 40 years of smoking pipes I have only had about 100 different blends, so I might ot be much of a judge....Read More

I didn't come here to step on anyone's Joy and it's very clear that the best part about pipe smoking is personal palette. I read all about this and was excited to try it. The aroma was confusing to me at first it didn't smell as good as it sounded but it wasn't bad it was more a notch above 'meh'. And it was not a bad smoke I smoked the whole tin but I won't buy another it just wasn't that impressive to me. The flavors are a bit muddled and as you get to the lower third of the bowl it just was acrid and not pleasant. Probably some of it has to do with my cadence which tends to run faster sometimes but I haven't had the issue with other rat trays blend including Sterling flake (which I love). There was a peppery component I guess it's the perique that just overshadowed and kind of stepped on the what would normally be more fragrant components in the bowl. YMMV. I would recommend instead Hal o the wind. More flavorful, a bit more refined than old gowrie, but not much. What compensates is the bolder and slightly wider complexity in HOW....Read More

Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 50g
Old Gowrie has quietly become one of my favorite blends, if not my actual favorite. It is warm, toasty, nutty and sweet. Almost like a roasted chestnut. There is just enough oomph from the burley (for me), without pushing into that light-headed state. It absolutely benefits from some aging; I can taste the difference between the tins from 2024 and 2025. But even young, it's still delicious. The only issue is availability, which unfortunately tends to plague all Rattray's blends. Stock up when you see it (or, preferrably, don't buy this so there is plenty for me.)....Read More
Rich. Robust. Dark fired?

Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 50g
I like Virginia blends that are smooth and mild but the flavor was too strong for me. Didn’t detect any dark fired whatsoever in the tin note or the taste. Just Virginia and some perique. It’s a rich, robust smoke (like molasses) but seemed to turn strong and ashy for me. For those who love strong Virginias, you’ll love this. I guess I’m one of the few people that don’t…...Read More
