Great blend.

It was great when it was new, and then a year later it seems to be even better.
Beautifully balanced

Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 50g
Old Gowrie has quietly become one of my favorite blends, if not my actual favorite. It is warm, toasty, nutty and sweet. Almost like a roasted chestnut. There is just enough oomph from the burley (for me), without pushing into that light-headed state. It absolutely benefits from some aging; I can taste the difference between the tins from 2024 and 2025. But even young, it's still delicious. The only issue is availability, which unfortunately tends to plague all Rattray's blends. Stock up when you see it (or, preferrably, don't buy this so there is plenty for me.)....Read More
Rich. Robust. Dark fired?

Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 50g
I like Virginia blends that are smooth and mild but the flavor was too strong for me. Didn’t detect any dark fired whatsoever in the tin note or the taste. Just Virginia and some perique. It’s a rich, robust smoke (like molasses) but seemed to turn strong and ashy for me. For those who love strong Virginias, you’ll love this. I guess I’m one of the few people that don’t…...Read More
More Civilized Version of Hal O' the Wynd

Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 100g
I have admired and appreciated the Virginias in the Rattray's blends for over half a century. They are some of the very finest. The biggest problem with Rattrays has been the sporadic availability of the brand over the years. If you enjoy Hal O' the Wynd (HOW);, but wish that it displayed a more temperate personality, this is the blend for you. Old Gowrie is very smooth and displays good manners with none of the sharpness and ill-temper of HOW. Simply put, Old Gowrie is primarily a mix of Virginias augmented by a little Perique and Dark-Fired Burley for added flavor and strength. It can be smoked anytime, anywhere or even all the time if you are so inclined. This blend is real tough to beat!...Read More
Six Years of Aging, but Now I Understand
December 31, 2025
Product: Rattray's Old Gowrie 100g
I bought this tobacco from a B&M back in December of 2019, opened it in the car and I can still remember the aroma: very bready/hay/tea biscuit with a hint of molasses and fig preserves. I thought I was going to melt it smelled so good. When I got this tin, I had only recently started smoking again after a few years and this was my very first Va/Per and nothing I had had (save for McClelland Dark Star, but let's not talk about that) up to that point smelled quite as seductive.
So I rushed home to smoke it. Pulled out my pipe, struck several matches and was off to pure, bitter, harsh, and treacherous disappointment. "What the hell happened to my figs!?" thought I to myself as I drank half a glass of ice water to cool my tongue. So I jarred it up and set it in the very back of what would eventually become my tobacco cabinet. At the time, I didn't know much about tobacco aging, but I have always had a problem throwing away even tobacco I don't like. So anyway, I forgot about that jar until I was going through my cabinet last night to check seals and found it, got curious (knowing now the benefits of aging) and set it on my bookshelf. First thing this morning I lit it up and was quite astonished. With now about six years on it, it has lost all of its rough edges, doesn't bite if you smoke with care and intention and is just as sweet as a dollop of jam, though it has also lost almost all spice from the perique while retaining a hint of the flavor which pokes through every third or fourth puff. But I love it. I'm going to smoke the rest of that jar pretty quickly and see how it does, but if I get even a remotely similar experience out of half of those bowls as I had this morning, I will have to buy more and see how it does with even more age.
