A truly Great Tobacco
January 04, 2013
Product: G. L. Pease Robusto 2oz
Not just a great tobacco but one of the all time great tobaccos - equal to or better than the best of Dunhill or Sobranie thirty years ago (I smoked most of them then and really loved some). It is a traditional English with some cigar leaf giving com... Read More
plexity, depth, balance and elegance. Smokes slightly dry rather than sweet at just over medium strength - taste most resembles one of the top Sobranies (Directors' Reserve Ready Rubbed in UK) but impact and complexity exceeds even that lovely tobacco from around 30 years ago. Through the bowl Robusto evokes varying levels of coco, nuts and coffee balanced by raspberries and dry plums. Improves dramatically with age up to at least eighteen months. Great but also friendly - a jolly good smoke at any and every time of day. Read Less

This is a powerhouses in the Cigar blend genre. The base flavor profile, a classic woody and smokey English, is paired with an unmistakably dark, earthy rich, cigar note. Extremely enjoyable, mildly complex and full bodied. The Virginia lays the foun... Read More
dation with notes of nut and wood. The smooth and smokey Cyprian Latakia teams up with the Oriental to produce overtones of smokey, nutty herbalness that combines richely with the espresso note from the Maduro. It's gorgeous! Behaves nicely on all fronts. Goes well after a big meal with a peaty scotch or coffee. Read Less

Fantastic blend. More cigar forward and hints of Latakia in the background, Smooth, creamy, mouth-watering blend of fine tobaccos. Truly robust on initial light, the Latakia slides in for added spice as the bowl progresses. Truly, one of the finest b... Read More

The tin note is a wonderful bouquet of earthy fruits and gentle smoky campfires. The Virginias add a bit of spice as well as a small sweetness, especially when smoked at a slow pace. The orientals round this blend well as they come into play about ... Read More
mid-bowl. The cigar leaf is ever present but not overpowering. Smoke this at a slow to moderate pace and it is a great afternoon or evening smoke. If you smoke it at a moderate to slightly fast rate, the cigar leaf tends to take the forefront. This blend is one that I will always have in my cellar. I do enjoy a mild cigar, from time to time but I find that this blend fills that niche nicely. I always get comments from folks stating "Wow, that pipe smells great!" The aftertaste will linger for a while but is pleasant. It burns reliably with few relights and as one would expect, a nice gray ash is left in the bowl with minimal moisture. It does cellar well and gets better with age. Read Less

A GLP blend that I have always enjoyed

Product: G. L. Pease Robusto 2oz
A GLP blend that I have always enjoyed. However, the last tin I seemed to notice latakia and orientals more. Perhaps I just noticed it more than in years past because my taste for latakia has diminished. It is an aged tin from 2017 (6 years age).

t was a full bodied blend, and I have always liked this one, especially the first half of the pipe. Certainly 6 years has changed the blend. I always preferred this over Key Largo, which is too sharp. The orientals in Robusto were minimal. The virginia and cigar leaf were the main components with latakia in the background noticeable. Nothing ruins tobacco blends greater than very sour tasting orientals and I don't understand with these are common in C&D blends.
I read that Pease wanted to blend something similar to the old Sobranie Virginia No. 10. My vague memory of that was cigar leaf and virginia
If that is so, this has way too much latakia. However this is a complex full bodied blend that is a classic in itself. Read Less

I am not tolerating cigar blends very well, but the Latakia mixtures seems to help. The cigar seems to be stronger in this one, it nips at my tongue a bit and has a strong lingering after taste. I got through the whole tin, but I won’t buy again.

avoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes of very earthy, moderately spicy, smoky wood, bread, floral, sweet grass, cigar, slight tangy lemon, mild creamy sweet background note, and a moderate peppery retro. Virginia is inching out the other leaf for the lead, Latakia and Cigar Leaf are battling for a supporting position. Oriental/Turkish are in the race, but mostly in the background. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is outstanding. Read Less

An excellent tobacco. Layered, complex aroma, dominated by excellent cigar leaf. Consistent from start to finish, leaving only fine, white ash.

Product: G. L. Pease Robusto 2oz
This blend has been such a disappointment. The Virginia is lovely, but the Latakia, though flavorful, overpowers everything. The Orientals show up to ruin what little good there is, and, as I stated at the top, I can't taste any cigar leaf. I'm halfw... Read More

I found this to be a nice blend. However not as good as Purple Cow or Mad Fiddler Flake. I think the Latakia and Orientals overpower the Cigar.

This is a nice harmonious English blend that smokes cool and stays lit. The cigar leaf presence is more forward in the room note than the taste.
