Super Balkan is mostly a bright flake mixture with Perique, Latakia, and Burley, spiked with high grade Turkish leaf. An even heavier dose of Latakia than found in Atlas Balkan. One of Cornell and Diehl's oldest blends.

Best bulk Balkan, by far.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Super Balkan Bulk
I rate based on what something is supposed to be, not some abstract standard of perfection, and this is the best bulk, $50 a pound, Balkan you can buy. As a $15 tin, it would be a 3-star, and it only rises to a 3.5 rating at the $13 price point. But it’s an excellent, strong smoke (though I think it’s not a 5 on Vitamin N), and could be an all-day smoke for the experienced smoker. All the ingredients and typical flavors are there, plus some delightful hay! The in-bag scent is wonderful! More importantly, there’s nothing there you won’t like, if you like Balkan blends. Does get a bit bitey if you smoke too quickly. Simply put, this is a more EMP and Chelsea Mornings smoke than Nightcap, Quiet Nights or Plum Pudding on flavor, meaning I’d like a tad more Perique and Lat for this strength level. Has just a few too many stems. But if someone, anyone, has found a better Balkan in bulk for this price, I’d love to hear it. I’ve never smoked it. Best on the planet at the price per pound, period....Read More

Super Balkan
smoking pipes rated 4.6

This ribbon cut Balkan / English is a masterful blending of Virginia, Burley, Perique, Latakia and Orinetals. The bag massages the senses with strong aromas of smoke, leather, orange peel, coal oil, iodine, molded hay
, and a sour funk over oak. It’s beautifully presented in consistent ribbons of tan, brown and black that are fluffy and crinkly.

Sampled in a MM Missouri Pride and smoked in a Peterson Spigot 05.

When I opened the bag on this blend this morning, I knew that it was going to be an absolute banger. The absolute thickness of the aromas coming out of the bag were almost so strong as to be cartoonish. The Latakia, Perique and Orientals perfume this blend so completely and thoroughly that it was all I could do not to smoke the entire sample in a day.

This is an absolutely beautiful bulk blend. My record is my record at this point - and it’s obvious that I prefer blends on the smoky side and blends that lean heavily into oriental leaf but what a treat this is to discover all the way at the 96th sample and a 101 sample project.

I can remember the epiphany like feeling I had the first time I had Balkan Sassini , and Balkan Sobrainie. Something about these mixes just absolutely speak to me and grab my attention, and this has definitely joined them in high regard.

Iodine. I speak often that the quality that I look for and enjoy. This one delivers.

Smoking a bowl of this to me is parallel to eating a rare porterhouse steak while enjoying a very hearty Malbec wine.

As a matter of fact, as I’m writing this review, I am enjoying a 2021 Pinot Noir with a Spigot 05 full and while it is absolutely delicious paired with it, it may be a little stronger than the wine can carry and demand a more hardy wine to completely pair it. Perhaps a stout Cabernet Sauvignon next time.

Oriental spice, Perique pepper, Latakia smokiness and a solid Burley/Virginia combination under pending to build it all delivers a symphony of sensory delights from flavor to aroma to taste even to the appearance in the bag.

Perfect All-Day Blend

Product: Cornell & Diehl Super Balkan Bulk
Absolutely loving this blend! Complex enough to focus on the varying notes, but perfectly balanced so your palate isn't constantly confused.

Tin note is like a wave of incense and spices wrapped in a seawater-logged leather. My spouse always knows when I've opened this jar in a room; as the h
eavy incense and chinese five-spice aroma lingers.

Similarly, I get the most comments from others when I smoke this with company. That Latakia is impossible not to notice, and the Perique gives it the bite it needs. The Burley, Orientals, and Virginia add beautiful floral-citrus notes that balance the dusty/leathery Latakia.

If you love English or Turkish/Orientals, this blend is a must! It's a great introduction to English blends for someone who typically sticks to Perique dominant VaPers.

Balkan-ish: Backwoods Balkan

A few years ago I gave C&D Super Balkan full marks, but today I give it just four. We all have our own definitions of "Balkan" but the classic definition is an Oriental-forward English mixture; that is, Virginia and Latakia setting the stage while the Orientals take centerstage. Super Balkan is not very Oriental-forward, as the Perique and Burley make rather loud contributions. Certainly we find both Burley and Perique in many English blends, the latter most especially, yet they are not supposed to steal the show in a blend labeled as "Balkan." The quintessential Balkan mix comprises the Big Three, i.e., Orientals, Latakia, Virginia, in that order. Super Balkan puts Burley in the driver seat with Perique navigating, while Virginia, Latakia, and Orientals act as mere passengers along for the ride. Consequently, it strikes me as more of an Americanized English blend than a true Balkan. It's very strong, loud, boisterous, rough around the edges, and uncouth — the stereotypical "Ugly American" on a trip across the pond as a tourist. It's good, and there's a role for it in any cellar, it's just not archetypal. It reminds me of something you might bring back from a visit with your estranged Appalachian uncle: a Backwoods Balkan. Homemade corn cob pipes, a mason jar of genuine moonshine, and a leather rollup pouch stuffed full of hand blended Backwoods Balkan, sure to knock you for a loop....Read More
