I've been pipe-smoking for 45+ years and "grew up" with the OLD Balkan Sobranie, Dunhill 965 and Standard Full, Rattray's Red Rapp and Black Mallory as well as Bengal Slices, State Express, etc. While I have found nothing like these old blends, some of todays are very smoke-able. This, however, raises the bar to another level. If you have been lamenting the old/good stuff, this is worthy of your attention! This is among my Top 5 Desert Island tobaccos. It’s perfectly balanced and rich in flavor. Never disappoints and gets better with age. Order this by the pound and keep some for cellaring.

As a general rule I avoid blends with latakia. Never cared for the taste and find much more enjoyment from Dark Fired blends. However, Arango Balkan to me seems to be lighter on the latakia than most and for me seems to have almost a creamy texture to the smoke. I haven't experienced that before and it was quite enjoyable. I also appreciate any blend that is available in bulk. BS is one of very few English blends that I would consider adding to the cellar....Read More

The smell of burning leather and plastic was very pungent, and it wasn't easy to light, which was quite unpleasant. I persevered until the middle to later stages when a sweet, creamy flavor appeared. Perhaps its lack of sweetness was due to the stark contrast created by the initial bitterness. Maybe after a few more puffs, I could get used to this bittersweet experience.
