About This Pipe Tobacco

While, Peterson's Sherlock Holmes pipe series is among the Irish marque's most collectible and celebrated, the Sherlock Holmes pipe tobacco boasts a much longer history, dating to a recipe from 1889 — just two years after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first publication, A Study in Scarlet. As a blend, it comprises Virginia and Burley tobaccos with a light citrus topping to highlight the Virginias' natural sweetness. A historic, vintage blend, Sherlock Holmes is a contemporary mixture of Doyle and Holmes' time period — the perfect commemoration.

The Case of the Tart and Tangy Blend

It is with no small degree of anticipation that I record the particulars of a certain tobacco, one which bears the distinguished name of “my dear friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes.” As an admirer of the stories and the character, and as a comparatively inexperienced pipe smoker, I approached the matter with equal parts enthusiasm and curiosity. Imagine, then, my surprise upon first breaking the seal. For where I had expected the “strong, dark shag” so often favored by Holmes in the Baker Street sitting room, I instead encountered a mixture of far lighter character — strands of blonde and toasted brown leaf, accompanied by a tin note redolent of citrus peel and damp hay after a summer rain. It was, I confess, not at all what I had been led to anticipate. Holmes himself, were he present, might have arched an eyebrow at such a discrepancy. Nevertheless, I resolved to proceed. Even after a patient half-hour of drying, the tobacco retained a notable moisture, requiring a certain persistence of flame to maintain. Upon lighting, I was struck first by a tartness that was sharp and insistent, akin to grapefruit, before it gave way, deeper into the bowl, to a curious sourness not unlike unripe mango. This progression, while intriguing, remained largely consistent over several weeks of repeated trials, though time did succeed in softening some of its more abrasive edges. “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data,” Holmes has once remarked. And so I gathered mine diligently. My conclusion, however, is a nuanced one. The blend is by no means unpleasant — indeed, there are moments where it proves quite agreeable, particularly when smoked in a pipe of larger bowl (a stout volcano, in my case), which seems to encourage a more measured and balanced expression of its character. And yet… It fails, in some ineffable way, to summon the spirit of the man whose name it bears. One does not, while smoking it, feel transported to the familiar comforts of 221B Baker Street… no glow of the hearth, no low murmur of Victorian London traffic beyond the window, no sense that Holmes himself might, in a moment of abstraction, reach for the tobacco tin. The illusion does not hold. I cannot help but think the blend might have been more aptly named for its creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle than its inspiration. It’s interesting, certainly, but lacking that singular, incisive character one associates with Holmes himself. Would I procure it again? Quite possibly. But I should, I think, follow a more patient course, cellaring it for a time, allowing it to mature and perhaps reveal qualities not immediately apparent. For as in all matters of investigation, it is often the passage of time that brings the clearest understanding....Read More

Great with age!

I tried this blend back in 2012 and didn't care for it. I recall it was pretty harsh on the palette with very little flavor, albeit I was an inexperienced pipe smoker and primarily enjoyed aromatics at the time. Fast forward 10+ years and my tobacco preferences have completely changed. A few years ago, as I was reorganizing my "cellar", I rememebred I had jarred the rest of that tin and put it out of my mind. Now having an experienced perspective on a variety of tabaccos, I gave this another try with age. Wow, what a completely different experience! The harshness that I remembered was completely gone, and what remained was a very smooth, sweet, and nutty blend that was gentle on the palette. This was the first time I had experienced such a dramatic change with aging my own tobacco, and has motivated me to buy more Virginias to cellar away. So my recommendation would be to buy a few tins of this each year to cellar away, and then start smoking them a few years down the road so that you can always enjoy this blend with age. When the tin arrived, I opened it up and loved the smell. So I did stupid and smoked a pipe with it right then. Very stupid, hot air with general notes of steam. Left sores on my tongue for a week.

Second smoke went better, left the tin closed on the shelf for 2 weeks. This time it was gentl
e on the tongue. The burley came to the forefront and stayed there. Virginias present at light up, tamping, and any relights.

The burley itself was more like cigar leaf blends I have smoked in the past. Not good, not bad, just very dour tasting and not changing.

Jared it, and let it have another week on its own. Very different animal. The virginias come out randomly during the whole smoke. The burleys are always present. The burleys are more docile and unsweetened. NO cigar note to it at all.

But through tamping the tobacco in the pipe got to compacted, and instantly became ashy cigarette tasting, heavy pepper effect on tongue. Nothing could undo this change. Dumped it.

Burns cool second two uses.

The citrus/lemon scent is extremely faint. Chasing it for a flavor by puffing will only cause tongue bite and burn. Chasing it for a scent will only end up with the nasal system and throat getting raw from the effort.

Its not bad, its not great. If they figured out a nicer burley to use, and evened the ratios of tobacco it would be good.

The topping is slight if noticable at all

Don't let the idea of a citrus topping scare you away as it did me. This is a solid Virginia/ Burley blend. Whatever topping is added blends in with the tobacco so well you won't even notice it. Unfortunately I was looking for a citrus topped blend .....
