About This Pipe Tobacco
When Dunhill announced it would no longer be producing tobacco, pipe smokers rued the loss of some of their favorite mixtures. Thanks to Peterson, however, those beloved blends are still available. They're the same recipes and feature the same tin art as Dunhill's, just re-branded for Peterson.
Elizabethan Mixture was originally an old Murray, Sons and Co. pipe tobacco blend, which Dunhill had recreated by the master blenders at Orlik. Like the original, Dunhill's Elizabethan combined pressed, darkened Virginia tobaccos with a dose of Perique to create an easy-to-enjoy blend with a tangy character and a bit of peppery spice. Thanks to Peterson, the Dunhill blend is still available, much to the joy of Virginia/Perique lovers.

nd is how it intensifies as it develops. I’m finding that the last third of the bowl is just blowing me away. I’ve only had a few bowls out of my beloved corn cobs so far, so as I get into briar and meerschaum the consistency might change a bit, but I’m not that worried about it considering the quality of tobacco and the lovely ribbon cut. I’ve been smoking so many flakes lately I forgot how convenient and easy to light a good ribbon can be. I finished a bowl earlier and when I was done only ash dumped out. Not a single piece of unsmoked tobacco. Damnest thing I’ve seen in awhile. So an obvious 10/10 on combustion. Can’t wait for me next bowl. and for these qualities, it's certainly a perfect 10 for how it handles.
I truly believe it's a great-tasting (possibly perfect VaPer) tobacco for my specific palate. My desires run towards the burley side of the leaves, and this blending gives a comfortable kitchen variety of baked goods in an oven, in an unhurried way (my grandmother's way). There's an old-world, unpretentious quality that's evident from the tin to the smoke, and some of the trendy tobaccos being shared around today are essentially made to look a bit "showier" by contrast. Could it be a burley lover's laid-back Virginia Perique? I really think it is. This doesn't jump up and down demanding to be extra spicy or jammy; it simply smokes easily and reveals a deliciousness centered on quality, straightforward tobaccos that unfold slowly and sumptuously at an understated, classy pace, in the same way.
If I could level any criticism or trite note, it would be that it isn't available in bulk. Then, I suppose it's the packaging and relative absence from the same that make my heart that much fonder of it.
A mystery might be why this isn't a wildly popular mixture, given the fairly strong trend towards large appetites where Virginia and Perique are concerned? I'd then recommend this to virtually anyone on either side of the scale of interest in these leaves, whether a beginner or a seasoned pipe smoker. It's a perfectly satisfactory blend that satisfies with modest strength, delicious (though possibly more subtle) flavors, and a "couldn't be easier" manual of arms in how easy it is to load, smoke, and maintain in any pipe....Read More

Wine and Dried Fruit

alities from it. The bready notes don’t really come out until the mid-bowl for me, and only if you sip it. Weirdly enough, the blend reminds me of a glass of a drier wine. It has a very dry finish on my palate, with strong wine like qualities. Almost like a natural grape flavor (there is no flavoring on this though). The perique is good but it’s certainly not C&D perique, but it’s good. In a sense, this blend tastes really similar to the Peterson De Luxe Rolls, but maybe my palate is fried from smoking a few hours ago haha
3.5 stars solely because there are better VaPers out there, but it’s certainly above average....Read More

l Elizabethan Mixture back in the 1990s, I can't help feeling that something has been lost along the way.
The Murray’s produced Dunhill version I remember seemed deeper, richer and more complex, particularly in the interplay between the Virginias and Perique. The current Peterson mixture feels a little lighter and doesn't quite have the same depth or integration I remember from those old tins. Perhaps it was the Virginia leaf, the processing, or the character and proportion of the Perique, but the old Murray’s blend had another dimension. Still a good VaPer and one I'll happily smoke, but it doesn't quite capture the magic of the Elizabethan Mixture I remember from the ’90s....Read More
