suspect the flavors will improve with age. EDIT: I smoked another bowl this afternoon from a cob after letting the tobacco sit in a jar for a few weeks. You know, this blend isn't too bad. I still think it's middle of the road, but it packs enough mellow flavor that I added another star. ver gets dull, it never bites, it never turns harsh. It's just satisfying overall. It also has very good potential for aging. When I cant decide what I want in my rotation for the time, or just burned out for wanting anything else, or just want to smoke away and not have to think about it, I chose Elizabethan. Let's face it, a lot of Virginias other there arent very user friendly. But you cant go wrong with this one for sure. Read Less

h is supposed to be a Match for DH'S Elizabethan. Compared to that, this stands up and holds it's own. The Sutliff is a little sweeter and the Peterson is more on the spicy side i guess owing to a greater Perique content. The sweetness tends to follow on the back end of the smoke for me. o in Continental Europe. But from the 1580s to 1603, when William Shakespeare’s literary powers were arguably at their height, what were the English people puffing? Those mostly broken clay pipes found in 2015 in the soil behind William Shakespeare’s house in Stratford-Upon-Avon in Oxfordshire—what mystery stuff was smoked inside those bowls?
Much of it was probably pure Virginias, some was probably blended with burley and Cavendish or some blends were possibly the last two married together. Some of the first tobacco was the the extra-bold and rough-hewn Rustica.
But Peterson has here is the old and widely-loved Dunhill recipe, showcasing fine and dark Virginias—but with a dash Louisiana perique. It does make for a delicious blend. But however mild the perique spice is herein, those Elizabethans never puffed Louisiana perique, something developed later and by another people.
Still—what’s not to like about Elizabethan Mixture? This finely-cut ribbon could easily be your all-day, especially if you’re a Virginia aficionado. If you love your VaPers, this medium-bodied or even mild VaPer is easy to puff and easy to really love. Because “Virginia is for lovers” and perique can be, too. 4.5 stars. Read Less

and grass complemented by the bright look of Golden virginia. Which is predominant in aroma and looks. The blend is cut to perfection - even more than the usual excellent Dunhill cut - and came at perfect moisture. I loaded the bowl which was a breeze and lit it up. It came out interesting, as I couldn't get much of that citrus taste whatsoever, it was richer and darker, but no light virginia or perique. And gradually towards the first third of the bowl the perique rises up to be the star of the show. Peppery, strong and nice, and this comes from someone who's not fond of perique. It remains so consistently till the very near end of the bowl. Dark and rich with a hint of pepper and zesty aroma. then just as I got to the end of the bowl, all this gets muted and the sharp, grassy virginia taste takes over. It is as if I am smoking a straight virginia. I tried 4 different pipes with it and got the same results, so I concluded that this is how it is. It won't make my favourite list for two reasons. One personal and one mechanical. The personal one is, I am fond of dark, rich virginia rather than bright ones, so that last part of the bowl becomes a tad annoying, and the mechanical part is that there is no complement of taste in that last part as well. It is as if the perique has disappeared from the blend. I compared this to one of my favourite VaPers which is Davidoff Flake medallions and I still prefer the medallions as it is more consistent and has aged virginia. But if you're unlike me, and you prefer sharp virginia, then definitely this is a top notch blend with the excellent mechanics of Dunhill tobacco.

blend and it got crispy dry. It was pretty sour and hot when you smoke it dry... I began to cellar it after I took a counseling and teaching from the said tobacconist. I've been cellaring for 5 years now. Just a month ago I opened it. That citrus tanginess wore off, blended into sweet aroma of Virginia. To compare with freshly open can. I can't say which is better. Freshly opened tins are great too, they are already balanced out in flavor and you can enjoy that citrus smell every time you stick your nose in. h perhaps that's just my taste changing. It's fresh tobacco in this blend, but the familiar aromas are there;. The sweetness of golden and dark Virginia with that delicious tang of perique, and just a hint of that green/fresh Virginia aroma. As one would expect with an unaged va/per, it could be considered a little harsh, but I enjoyed the added spice in my nostrils as I retrohaled. After 4-6 months of aging Elizabethan will be an incredible all day smoke, and I look forward to the deeper flavor and smoother smoke it reveals. Is it the same as the old Elizabethan? Yes! This is a great blend. If I could only have one, this would be it. A bit spicy, and thus a good fit for a slow smoker. If you are a fast smoker, it might be a bit too harsh. This is my favorite mixture that contains perique. Five stars!

nds haven't changed and that's definitely a good thing. Elizabethan is one of the great Dunhill blends that survived under the Peterson moniker. Probably, my second favorite VaPer behind Escudo Navy DeLuxe. It's a typical Dunhill ribbon, so it's cut is uniform and it packs well. I've always found that about ten minutes of drying time helps it smoke the best. The tin note, to me, has always been hay and raisins with a hint of crushed sweet peas. The virginias in this blend are very good, of course, but where it really shines is in the perique, or rather the extremely precise use of it. There's just enough to give you that wonderful pepperiness and tingle on the retrohale, without overpowering those excellent virginias. The flavors that come through for me are stewed prunes, lemon grass, pepper, and coffee beans. It all makes for quite a satisfying smoke. Read Less

he best option for packing was the air pocket method, any other way and I seemed to get tobacco plugged in the air hole of the pipe in the course a smoke, this is very bothersome since I like using a 6mm balsa filter which prevents me from running a pipe cleaner all the way to the bowl to clear the airway. I also found it to be a little on the strong side, not overpowering but enough to get an unexpected nic hit from. There is not a lot of Va. sweetness but the smoke is smooth and has a little spice to it, retro-haling gives a slight sinus tingle. No doubt a blend that everyone should try but I am not sure it will make into my regular rotation. For me, it cannot replace some of the VaPer flakes that are available most of the time.
After multiple before breakfast bowls I suggest not smoking this on an empty stomach, it is a bit too strong for that. Also, pace your puff, if puffed aggressively it will bite. Read Less
