This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! Escudo is well represented in my cellar and for good reason. This blend ages with the best of them. Although, I really enjoy this blend with just a year of age on it. At this time when you crack a tin it has an incredible tin note of muscadines. The smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. The blend supports a wonderful mix of fruit, spice and a touch of hay (particularly when it is young). Give this one a try if you have not done so already. Read Less

I don't write reviews often, but this one seemed to be a given. As is my usual practice, I opened a tin of Peterson EMP, the day after I got it, and the day before I smoked it. The introduction of air to a vacuum sealed tin always tends to excite the poor tobacco that has been deprived, and it gets it pretty excited. Well I must say I was incredibly happy to have EMP back. From the moment I opened the tin I could remember the wonderful scent of Dunhill EMP. From the moment of the 1st burn, everything was right in the world again. Thank you Peterson for picking this back up, and keeping it exactly the same!! Read Less

This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. A standard; a classic. So terrific when your pipe aquires a taste for it after a few bowls. I cannot state enough how beloved Orlik Golden Sliced is. It is as perfect of a flake as one can hope for. Ive smoke about a quarter pound of regular and special reserve plum pudding now and they share a common thread... they are absolutely delicious. I do prefer the special reserve for it's added smoothness and depth of flavor. Normally i just prefer to slice off a slab and loosely crumble it into medium to large sized chunks for a solid 1.5 hour smoke. A word of caution: only prepare what u intend to smoke for the next pipe or day at most. I made the mistake of preparing half the brownie since i was smoking so much of it and then i ended up putting it aside for a couple months. The plum flavor will dissipate during that time. Smoked fresh the plum flavor is absolutely fantastic and is a companion from first light to last puff. Rich, smokey, mesquite, spicy, smooth, and truly a melange of fine smoky and plum flavors that is intoxicating in the best way. I dont deliberate on the flavors im tasting here, i just lounge in my chair and drink it all in and relax. A little mesquite here, a lot of campfire and leather there, and some spicy perique and cavendish throughout. Make no mistake though, this is more enjoyable with the plum flavor present and accounted for. If you like a rich english smoke its hard to go wrong here. Medium in body and mild in nicotine from my experience. Even after several relights it maintains its flavor and body without getting harsh. Special reserve ages magnificently, and gets even smoother and more rich/complex in flavor. In my opinion this is the best that SPC has to offer hands down, being a true stand out blend. If I may be so bold... both this blend and the original are easily in the top 10 best blends currently in production and for my preference top 3( even over penzance). As a lover of pretty much all tobaccos, and a guy whose rotation and preferences are forever shifting and exploring new blends, PPSR always finds ito way back to the top of my rotation. If you like English tobaccos I highly recommend trying this one. It may be a little pricey but it's worth every penny.
ADDENDUM: In the time since I first smoked these blends, I've learned that I largely dislike the processing done on most* Sutliff and McClelland blends. That being said, I still thoroughly enjoy PP Special Reserve and other blends from these companies. Generally speaking I do not, however, so I figured it might be a good idea to add this info in case there are people with similar likes and dislikes. My opinion of PP Special Reserve remains unchanged for now (I'm about.to pop a fresh tin and begin the journey side by side with aged regular PP), and that is to say that it is pretty awesome stuff and extremely smooth. It might be impossible to make this one bite, once dried correctly. Seriously. Read Less

Now I'm the first to admit that this review may be quite subjective - but this tobacco has made it to the top of my list and has become my all-day smoke; to the extent that I'm hesitant filling my pipe with any of the other great tobaccos in my collection.

I love everything about Presbyterian, starting with opening the tin, feasting my eyes on the coarsely cut mixture of bright and dark leaves. This is accompanied by the delicious musty, earthy, and spicy aroma. The cut is ideal for the way I fill my pipe (similar, but not identical, to the 'air pocket' method).

The tobacco lights easily, even when slightly moist from a freshly opened tin. When it has dried out just a little, it can be smoked all the way down from the first light, although I would rarely smoke a bowl in one sitting; that is no problem though, as it maintains its delicious taste and aroma, even after cooling down and sitting for some time before a relight.

As a lover of Orientals, I find these tobaccos to be the star of the show, perfectly complemented by the Latakia and Virginia. I have always loved Latakia, and still do, but these days I prefer its use as a condiment rather than a major ingredient (as found in many English and Balkan blends); and in this regard, Presbyterian really shines. The components combine to give the tobacco a somewhat sweet, almost aromatic note, but one can sense that it is all natural, without any casing or flavoring.

I love retro-haling, and this brings out even more flavors, adding a delightfully pungent note to the smoke; and to me that must be Presbytarian's greatest achievement - providing so many delicious flavors without resorting to anything artificial.

As a previous reviewer has mentioned, my main regret is the fact that it is not available in bulk.

Like aged wine, enchanting the soul.
And like the forest after rain, fresh and bewitching.

Through past and present, witnessing vicissitudes.
The smoke of the pipe tobacco drifts with the wind,
Thoughts fluttering, minds reaching afar.

A lot has been said comparing the latest version of (Bell's) Three Nuns and it's predecessors, but all I've ever had is the modern take. And that I can tell you, is pretty good. It's dominating character is some tasty dark-fired Kentucky. The Virginia and Burley fall in behind the DFK with Burley coming in second most but not all of the time. The cut is curly, a.k.a. coin, and they are not tightly spun. The coins are small and fragile, basically lending themselves to an easy rub-out and they have a good moisture level. You could try to stack these but they're too small to fold. If you've had Mac Baren Dark Twist, the cut is the same. In fact, the two tobaccos are very similar. In my experience the Bell's is fuller bodied and a bit stronger in the nicotine department, but the flavors are the same...smokey without the Latakia campfire. I enjoyed this one fresh off finishing a Dark Twist 100g tin to make a side-by-side comparison for myself and I think I prefer the Mac Baren, but because they are so similar this could just be the tins I had. The Mac Baren was 7 years old, and the Three Nuns only a few months and I know that can make a big difference. If either of these sound good to you, get a tin of each. Three nuns should be tried by all. Tobaccos with pedigrees as old as this one that are still around deserve a try. Enjoy. UPDATE: Since I posted this review, Three Nuns has expanded to a nine nuns lineup: Red, Green and Yellow. It's worth mentioning that the Green tin contains Perique like the original version by Bell's. If you're looking for something akin to older versions, you may want to start with Three Nuns Green. I've only been pipe smoking for 3 months now, after hand rolling for 2 years and then smoking Marlboro's for 25 years before that. I don't bother to give a review unless I feel it's worth 5 stars.... I was a real tobacco snob at first and resisted this stuff when I saw it in a smoke shop because the pouch brought back childhood memories and I figured if my Grand Dad smoked it, there had to be something better out there by now. I've been having great fun sampling various Lane and Sutliff aromatics, but did eventually get curious and buy a pouch. After just two bowls I jumped here and ordered a big ol' tin to make sure I never run out. This stuff provides just enough of a back-of-the-throat hit, along with nicotine satisfaction to keep this former cigarette smoker happy, without any cough or burn. I've been packing a bowl before bed every night so it's ready when I wake up. Get some and try it. Read Less

I’m fairly new to pipe smoking, so I hadn’t had a chance to try HU. I was pleasantly surprised to see it available on several US tobacconist’s sites for sale. After smoking a few bowls of the Director’s Cut I feel that I can safely say this is an outstanding blend. Each individual tobacco used can be tasted through nearly every puff. Smooth, flavorful, and oh so creamy, the tobaccos used seem to be superior quality. I mean most of what we get today is high standards, but this just seems outstanding. The dark fired Kentucky adds a great smokey flavor that accents the virginia, perique, and burley. Smokey, nutty, spicy, woody, fruity- a ton of great flavors. Burns well and cool. A slight roughness near the end but never harsh. If you want a detailed review by a long time smoker, check out reviews by Jiminks, or Jim Amash, on a few tobacco review sites. Apparently, the blend has been slightly changed at times, but hopefully now, it’s close to what Hans meant for it to be in the beginning. Edit: Im not sure why anyone would say this has maple or vanilla flavoring, or is wet in the tin. Ignore those comments, Director’s Cut may have a slight sugar topping, but it certainly isnt maple or vanilla! Certainly isnt wet in the tin. It has a bit of moisture but this isnt molto dulce at all. Burns well right out ofcthe tin with very little dottle. Read Less

This, in my opinion, is a firmly "middle of the road" VaPer. Tin note of raisin bran, smokes sweet and vaguely fruity. No particular flavors stand out from the constituent tobaccos. The perique is barely noticeable and the virginias are very mild. I suspect the flavors will improve with age. EDIT: I smoked another bowl this afternoon from a cob after letting the tobacco sit in a jar for a few weeks. You know, this blend isn't too bad. I still think it's middle of the road, but it packs enough mellow flavor that I added another star. I could see myself going to this tobacco for afternoon smokes when I'm not craving anything in particular. Read Less

SPC Plum Pudding Tin Note: what a glorious smell! Subtle latakia hit my nose on first whiff, followed by an almost citrusy bouquet. It smells like an “English” but with notes that I can only describe as refreshing—almost citrusy. I guess those refreshing notes are the Orientals and Perique? My nose is not yet so refined to say for sure. There is a sweetness to the scents as well, which I guess is the cavendish. In sum, the aromas are somewhat subtle; no one aroma oversteps the others except that the latakia calls the rest into line. This tobacco smells exciting. Appearance in Tin: hunks of what looks like very thick cut flakes. Not sure how to approach these. I figure I’ll try gently rubbing-out one of these and loosely stuffing it in my pipe. The hunks look like pieces of a pressed-dried fruit bar. Packing the Pipe: I’m smoking this fresh from the tin. The cake strips aren’t very moist. In fact, it was alarmingly easy to break up a bowl’s worth with just my thumb and index finger. I noticed that if I crumbled too hard, I would dust the product. I immediately emptied the tin into a mason jar. The moisture content is perfect for immediate smoking, but I’m afraid of letting it go much farther than that. I’m using a Medico Varsity Briar pipe with a bent stem, packed using the three pinch method, no filter. Char Light: this tastes kind of like Dunhill MM 965 on char, but not as latakia forward. There’s also the pleasant twang of orientals hitting my tongue causing slight salivation, which makes me want more. My initial impressions on char-light are that I’m going to enjoy this bowl. Relight & Smoke to Half: I love what the Orientals are doing for the smoke overall; they make the general latakia notes of this tobacco so much more exciting. Conclusion: consistently delicious. The orientals, perique, and cavendish kept the latakias nuanced and exciting from start to finish. Read Less
