About This Pipe Tobacco

Honoring historic US Burley growing regions, Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch: Eight State Burley showcases the often overlooked nuance and complexity of air-cured leaf, beginning with a specially sourced, matured blend of 2014 White and Dark Burleys — offering a mellow, creamy nuttiness, as well as a subtle, soft cocoa flavor on the palate. Top-tier Canadian Brights and SM2-18 Red Virginias (the same grade as in last year's run of Carolina Red Flake and Carolina Red Flake with Perique) complement those distinctive flavors with layers of sweetness, tang, and bready spice. Finally, Oriental tobaccos, well aged for 17 years, further contribute to the complexity of this unique Burley mixture: A blend of rare Sokhoum, Samsun, and Katerini sun-cured leaf from 2005 add a lightly floral, oily, spicy and tart flavor — their sweetness having deepened and their sour notes having muted with age.

The blended mixture is pressed, sliced, and tumbled into an old-fashioned "chop-block" or ready-rubbed cut for an elegant balance of easy preparation and optimized aging potential. Eight State Burley is perhaps the most elevated rendition of a Burley blend available on the market today: Handcrafted in South Carolina using specially sourced, rare varietals and components of the highest caliber, it evolves in depth and character from first light to final puff — offering a familiar, comforting, and nostalgic flavor that expands to challenge preconceptions and set the new standard for Burley blends across the board.

Great burley entry into the Small Batch series

Product: Cornell & Diehl Eight State Burley 2oz
Please stop reviewing pipe tobacco if you are inexperienced or can't taste. Eight State Burley is not egregiously topped, it has the taste of quality burleys mixed with top notch orientals, Virginia, and black cavendish. The burleys add a nutty, woody, and cocoa like sweetness. The orientals translate to a delightful buttery mustiness. That absolutely is not coming from a "Sun Bear" topping like so many misinformed reviewers have said here. I just don't want you to mislead others with your inexperience. This is pure, powerful blending of tobacco and not flavored with crap. If you're at all familiar with burley blends you know there's almost always a little something added to round out the smoke and make a more pleasant experience. Same is true of nearly all "natural" tobaccos. These are not added flavors but complimentary flavors and when well done they are usually barely noticeable, sometimes not at all. Or the addition can be done as with Haddo's Delight which has an obvious spirit addition that works fantastically with the tobacco blend. With Eight State Burley, the topping is apparent in the tin note but light and disappears behind the tobaccos. I pick up cocoa and a similar but greatly reduced note of whatever is used in Savinelli 145 (even in that blend, the topping was readily apparent but not heavy in tin note but took a far back seat during the smoke). Oriental forward with a solid foundation of burleys first half of the bowl which come into balance as they're smoked down. Pleasant, repeatable smoke that has nuance but isn't complex. Really looking forward to what just a year or two does for this blend....Read More

I'd heard a lot about this tobacco, and finally got my hands on a tin of it aged for two years. Upon opening, the tin exuded an aroma of cocoa and chocolate, which was a bit too much for my liking. The tobacco was quite moist, so I dried it out a bit before packing it. Unfortunately, I didn't like it, and I don't share all the rave reviews and praise described here. In my opinion, this tobacco is overrated....Read More
Incredible burley-forward blend!

Product: Cornell & Diehl Eight State Burley 2oz
This may indeed be the best burley blend sold today, er, every now and then. I just popped the top on a cellared tin from release before last, and it was even better than when fresh. No toppings, just quality ingredients, all in balance, all in harmony, and all with mouth-watering flavor. Sweetness from the Virginias. Nuts, cocoa, earth and more subtle sweetness from the burley. Sour and tangy, plus a little spice from the orientals. Not a nic monster, as some burley blends are. Packs, lights and burns flawlessly. Also burns surprisingly cool. Anxiously awaiting the next release. I’ll be buying the max of tins per person for several days straight....Read More
Excellent, complex Burley

Product: Cornell & Diehl Eight State Burley 2oz
Not a burley smoker, perferring VAPERs and VA's, but I do go back to Burley often. This is not what I expected, but far beyond expectations. I only got two cans and sorry I did not get more as I go back to this very often, again, not expected at all. Complex, yet easy smoking, enjoyable and always intriguing. A real delight for a change of pace. The initial tin note indicated that there was a lot of topping (and I despise aromatics), but now I am sure that is not correct - must be the tobacco itself with no topping, but perhaps with a little casing. But I am sure it is a great smoke!...Read More
Cool smoke

Product: Cornell & Diehl Eight State Burley 2oz
I was given a sample bag of this and now I’m wishing I had bought some tins when it was available. It’s a cool smoke, mellow with no bite, yet still strong flavors. Taste similar to almonds with a hint of cocoa. I’ll definitely get 4 or 5 tins if/when it’s available again.
