About This Pipe Tobacco

Honoring historic US Burley growing regions, Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch: Eight State Burley showcases the often overlooked nuance and complexity of air-cured leaf, beginning with a specially sourced, matured blend of 2014 White and Dark Burleys — offering a mellow, creamy nuttiness, as well as a subtle, soft cocoa flavor on the palate. Top-tier Canadian Brights and SM2-18 Red Virginias (the same grade as in last year's run of Carolina Red Flake and Carolina Red Flake with Perique) complement those distinctive flavors with layers of sweetness, tang, and bready spice. Finally, Oriental tobaccos, well aged for 17 years, further contribute to the complexity of this unique Burley mixture: A blend of rare Sokhoum, Samsun, and Katerini sun-cured leaf from 2005 add a lightly floral, oily, spicy and tart flavor — their sweetness having deepened and their sour notes having muted with age.

The blended mixture is pressed, sliced, and tumbled into an old-fashioned "chop-block" or ready-rubbed cut for an elegant balance of easy preparation and optimized aging potential. Eight State Burley is perhaps the most elevated rendition of a Burley blend available on the market today: Handcrafted in South Carolina using specially sourced, rare varietals and components of the highest caliber, it evolves in depth and character from first light to final puff — offering a familiar, comforting, and nostalgic flavor that expands to challenge preconceptions and set the new standard for Burley blends across the board.

Ridiculous.

Its absolutely ridiculous to be a paying customer who spends as much money as I do with Smokingpipes/C&D and that at least 1 tin isn't automatically reserved for customers who spend money in a certain tier. Especially something that is on a wishlist and is literally gone 2 hrs after hitting the market. A limit of 1 to 3 for the first day or two would be a better system. Or a subscription system. Idk. And then if you dont visit the site within a set time frame it goes back to the selling pool. Especially when you are certain that the Chinese Communist Party most assuredly bought them out for resale or just to make this 43 year old whine like a toddler. Three years waiting on a tobacco that is probably just another C&D one hit wonder that sits on the cellar shelf with the other one hit wonders. Yes I'm crying about it. Yes I'm aware there are other ways to vent about it. However its complete garbage that they don't make enough for the regular people that have jobs and don't sit glued to the Smokingpipes screen literally every minute. I get on here multiple times a day. And yet I'm still tinless. I feel better now that I've vented my simple minded rant as a keyboard warrior. Enjoy the most likely sub-par blend that's possibly overrated. I still cant give a valid opinion and I'm sorry if this review skews the ratings system. Better luck next year right? The rating may change once I try it. 2 tins came through the Straight of Hormuz. Thank God. I'll re-evaluate things in a couple of days folks. After receiving my 2 tins I give it a 5. It is worth the hype. But make more next time guys!...Read More
Great burley entry into the Small Batch series

Please stop reviewing pipe tobacco if you are inexperienced or can't taste. Eight State Burley is not egregiously topped, it has the taste of quality burleys mixed with top notch orientals, Virginia, and black cavendish. The burleys add a nutty, woody, and cocoa like sweetness. The orientals translate to a delightful buttery mustiness. That absolutely is not coming from a "Sun Bear" topping like so many misinformed reviewers have said here. I just don't want you to mislead others with your inexperience. This is pure, powerful blending of tobacco and not flavored with crap. If you're at all familiar with burley blends you know there's almost always a little something added to round out the smoke and make a more pleasant experience. Same is true of nearly all "natural" tobaccos. These are not added flavors but complimentary flavors and when well done they are usually barely noticeable, sometimes not at all. Or the addition can be done as with Haddo's Delight which has an obvious spirit addition that works fantastically with the tobacco blend. With Eight State Burley, the topping is apparent in the tin note but light and disappears behind the tobaccos. I pick up cocoa and a similar but greatly reduced note of whatever is used in Savinelli 145 (even in that blend, the topping was readily apparent but not heavy in tin note but took a far back seat during the smoke). Oriental forward with a solid foundation of burleys first half of the bowl which come into balance as they're smoked down. Pleasant, repeatable smoke that has nuance but isn't complex. Really looking forward to what just a year or two does for this blend....Read More

Damn it was easier to get Rolling Stones tickets in the 1970's than it is to get this Burley blend. Guess I will have to be glued to my phone and then if I am lucky buy as much as I can. Then if I don't like it sell it for more than I paid for it just like I did with pot in the 1970's. That is how I was able to afford Rolling Stones tickets 😂...Read More

Managed to get a couple tins upon release. Just opened 1st tin to try and yep, it’s good stuff. I’ve never been a big fan of Burley’s but it’s slowly becoming my favorite tobacco varieties. I love Virginia’s but man I’ve got to concentrate to avoid tongue bite with them. No such problem with this or most Burleys in my opinion. At the risk of sounding cliche’ it’s nutty, smooth and hint of cocoa, but in a buttery kind of way, not chocolate. I’d check your B&M or some under the radar internet tobacco shops, it’s worth searching for.
If your looking for another Burley to try, don’t sleep on Crooner. It’s highly underrated IMO.
I’m blessed to have some of my grandfather and my fathers old pipes so I smoked this Eight State Burley in one of my grandfathers old ‘75 Dunhill’s, that I’m 100% certain had alot of Sir Walter Raleigh run through it. So kinda cool that I got to experience a new upgraded version of burley blend in that pipe. BTW was drinking a bourbon barrel stout beer while smoking this ESB and it was a great pairing. Well those are my thoughts, hope this helps.
