The one for experienced smokers
September 30, 2017

I rarely find tobacco tin literature more than a nice gimmick. However, I think this one summarises the blend. "Recommended for the experienced smoker" and there is good reason behind this. The strength, the mechanics and lastly the targete... Read More
d palette. As soon as I opened the tin, I was greeted by - what is in my opinion - the most excellent cut flake I have ever seen. It is cut to perfection. It was 24 equal and stacked flakes of very dark brown colour. They have a soft, oily feel to the touch and give away a strong, smoky aroma. It reminds me a lot of smoked herring in the most pleasant way. the flake came moist and needed some drying time, though they never bit when smoked as they are. Though - and this is the first part of what makes it "experienced" - is that you need to dry it perfectly to get the taste profile. Other than that, it won't give away its secrets. I normally found that 20 minutes of dry time as a flake then rubbing it well and leaving it for 5 more minutes made it perfect.. It lights with a bit of effort as most flakes, but as soon as it lights it stays lit and smokes cool. Upon the first few puffs I didn't get much of a taste except a rich, dark taste. Then it starts to give away a beautiful, dark, nutty taste. This is burley and kentucky tango. They mingle and dance in your mouth. The taste is strong and commanding that I rarely felt any Virginia in there. Yet it has a surprisingly light room note. It smoked consistently and at most needed 1-2 relights.. It burns to the bottom well and rarely leave any moisture in the bowl. It is quite strong on nicotine though. After eating well and being paired with some tea or coffee, this will make your head feel light. So beware. And I have to say that this pairs well - actually very well - with coffee. It is strong, it is recommended and it is indeed not for a novice smoker

A Great, Strong Blend
September 15, 2018
Product: Peterson Irish Flake 50g
This is a great blend for those of us that like stronger tobacco blends. The flavor is a superb, straight forward tobacco that is slightly sweet, smoky, and tangy. But be warned, it packs a punch. Delicious.

cotine, you'll want to give this tobacco its proper respect; eat beforehand or else be prepared for a shamanic experience. The flavor is very strong and if you smoke slowly you will coax some serious smoky depth and complexity along with a little molasses sweetness from the dark fired burlies. There's a slightly spicy and mildly bitter anise casing that permeates the smoke but does not dominate it, which balances the smoky top notes of the dark fired burly perfectly. Mixes extremely well with straight virginia flakes, my favorite way to smoke it at the moment is a 1:2 mix of Irish Flake and Capstan. Outstanding quality tobacco. Read Less
Not as Intimidating as the Hype

ith a variety of flavors and room notes that don't compete but compliment each other. The flake is very moist right out of the tin. I've tried a few different ways of loading the bowl... folding, rubbing out, cutting..etc. I personally believe that folding gives the best experience. Back to the nic strength for a moment... I suppose for a novice smoker, this one might be too strong but if you've been around the block a few times, this is just right. I have also learned that the experience should take precedent over the nic and in that respect, this is an amazing blend that I will continue to buy everytime I get an In Stock alert. Read Less

A dissenting opinion
July 06, 2015
Product: Peterson Irish Flake 50g
Tobacco reviews are mostly subjective. That said, Irish flake is not for me, primarily because it tastes very manufactured. The dominant flavor for me is an unnatural amount of anise and/or tonquin. I also get some citrus and sweetness that don't ... Read More
taste natural either. While the high nicotine content doesn't bother me, if you don't like vitamin N I'd recommend staying far away. For some reason (probably the casings?) this blend makes me salivate excessively, something no other blend has done, and it''s not good to drool all over a vulcanite stem. ;-) If I accidentally inhale some, it immediately causes my lungs to ache, I'd guess because of combustion by-products from the casings. On the plus side, it's well behaved in the bowl, burns cool and slow. The flavors also mellow and merge with age. But it's not at all what I'd call "true to the pure tobacco taste" as the slogan says. I much prefer HH Old Dark Fired or to a lesser degree Bold Kentucky. As always, try it and judge for yourself - lots of people like it. Just not me. Read Less
Anyone can smoke Irish Flake
May 31, 2021
Product: Peterson Irish Flake 50g
I’ve never been a fan of the gatekeeping that goes on within this hobby, and with this blend in particular. Yes, the tin states that it’s for “the experienced smoker.” Yes, it takes a good amount of care and a certain gentleness to get the most out o... Read More
f it. However, like so many other things, I tend to take the approach popularized by a certain Pixar film, and to amend the famous one-line saying from that film, I believe anyone can smoke Irish Flake.
If you like a tobacco that’ll give you a kick in the throat and make the room gently and pleasantly spin; if you like a tobacco that has a complicated flavor that alternates with every puff between meaty and nutty; if you like a tobacco that produces a creamy, almost corporeal smoke; this is your tobacco. This is anyone’s tobacco. Smoke it quickly and get knocked on your ass. Puff it gently and slowly after a meal and it’s its own dessert, and you’ll likely still get knocked on your ass; it is a strong blend.
Holding the smoke in your mouth is similar to taking the first bite of a Thanksgiving turkey your uncle spent all day burning down the backyard to prepare, circa 1996. It’s a nostalgic blend that way, reminiscent of long summer afternoons where the sun refuses to just set. Each puff is delicate but present and significant. When I smoke this blend I always somehow feel like a young adult who’s only drunk little stolen sips of his parents’ beer before and is finally sitting down at the bar and ordering his first Scotch with an I.D. that no longer needs to be fake.
I grew up in a small town in the Ozarks. Marlboro country. Smoking Irish Flake takes me back to the long drives past cattle pastures and old half-collapsed barns, the sweet smell of mature hay blowing in through the open windows, a beautiful girl in the passenger seat and only two crappy radio stations to choose from. It didn’t matter what was on the radio though, really, or who was in the passenger seat. I was at once both driving and along for the ride. Completely in control and somehow not at all at the same time.
I don’t care how or why you smoke this tobacco, I only highly recommend that you do. Read Less

ere; we’ve all been affected by the pandemic. During this time though, I found myself reaching for Peterson Irish Flake more and more until it became a daily ritual. The tobacco itself was not new to me. It has occupied a corner of my mind since the first time I tried it, wandering the streets of Dublin in the company of a woman I had recently met. She eventually married her Spanish beau. But, he wasn’t there that evening; just she and I. We shared a meal at The Woolen Mills on Valentine’s Day. After, we walked along the River Liffey in the chill of the winter night. Opening the tin I am met with a rich aroma. There are undertones of smoke and a long whole-note of deep fruit buried way down. Riding atop it all is an anise-like pungency. It reminds me of fresh Copenhagen. I usually break the flakes and let them air out for a while, careful not to wait too long, though overly drying it doesn’t really diminish the richness of the flavor. The smoke is rewarding and full upon lighting. After that, I let it combust slowly, sipping the smoke. I taste the rich tobacco. There is slight a taste of the char on a Pittsburgh-rare steak. The anise-like element is there too, and a mild sweetness of a Virginia. This is a full-flavored smoke. It pairs well with most good whiskeys or black tea. I get that catch in the back of my throat from the nicotine, and some days I set the pipe down for a while. Some days I don’t. As the bowl progresses, I get a more spice on the retrohale. I write in my notebook and watch the old man across the alley spit on the cats down below. Life here and now is not ideal, but it never has been. Having a tobacco like Peterson Irish Flake can make everything seem a little less absurd. Even if for just a short while. Read Less

The flavor though, reminded me of the time I tried to smoke hey in a cob when I was a kid. Mayhap the flavors are just too subtle for my taste I don't know. The smoke really was quite unpleasant to my nasal passages as well, I know it's supposed to be strong, I get it, I am no stranger to strong pipe tobaccos but this was something that seem adjunct and unnatural. as enough to sell me on it. I probably should have started with something tamer, but I guess sometimes you just gotta go with the beast before you. This is for the "experienced" pipe smoker to the degree that it is strong and full flavored, but if you like the taste of tobacco then you'll love this blend. There is an anise topping, but I only barely notice it. I more than anything get a wonderful rich earthiness, and nuttiness. There is also a surprising sweetness that sits below the strength, and a pleasant spiciness. I have set this tobacco aside several times to try other things, but this is always the one I come back to. It's not an all day smoke, at least not for me, but it's something I could smoke daily. It's just a good solid blend. I have a few tins cellaring away, and I've had a preview of a 10 year flake (brick and mortar mustache guy had some) and what happens with 10 years of age? Smoothness. Incredible smoothness. I can't wait! I love this blend, I do. It's just a good, wonderful, honest straight forward tobacco. Very Slow Burn

I give this five stars because the flavor is nirvana. However it burns deathly slow. I smoke this tobacco in nose warmer pipes that don't hold very much and the smoke can last two hours. Stop puffing on this for 30 seconds and the flame goes out. But... Read More

I am not a big burley fan, so I was hesitant with this blend. I love DFK, so I felt it might work out. I rubbed this flaked out and packed my pipe. The charring light went smoothly. I think I had to relight a couple of times, but it was a fresh tin. ... Read More
The room note wasn't great, but the taste was pleasant. The dark fired kentucky seemed balanced well with the virginia and burley. The nicotine was strong, but not as much as I was led to believe. e anise or toppings then you might be turned off. The topping does dissipate with time, however, and in a years time becomes faint and the primary flavors are that of sweet and Rich Virginia and dark fired. Irish flake is strong in nicotine but not overwhelming for the seasoned smoker. A fine balance of dark virginia and sweet flue cured with enough dark fired to make it plenty interesting, irish flake hits most of the right notes for me. The flavor is solid and the topping persists but it doesnt wow me. Nonetheless i fond myself reaching for this on many a morning smoke. On a final note this can be a little harsh, often not noticed until the next morning or later with a slightly raw throat sometimes. Excellent stuff.
Addendum: a couple tins later and some age on my most recent jarred tin and I have to bump this up a couple notches. The flakes have darkened a little more in some places to near black and a couple patches of bloom/plume have developed. After a coming back to IF from a small break I realized how much I missed it. When I put flame to pipe I got a wonderful blast of sweet virginia and smoky dark fired flavor reminiscent of ODF by Mac baren and more so than before. The top note really dissipates over time but does remain faintly present and much more complementary to the tobacco flavor. I need to buy more of this and ODF immediately.. Read Less

s a crappy burning blend so they can smell the tin? The flake rubs out easily, but on opening I find is just a little damp and needs an hour or so to dry. a fan of GL pease "gas light".).
Irish lake is a wonderful combination of full-bodied tobacco flavor with just the right level of sweetness throughout the bowl . I detect no licorice or anise as other reviewer have mentioned which is surprising since I'm often verry sensitive to both and don't particularly care for either. My palette picks up good strong tobacco flavor and finds the sweetness comes through as hints of dried stone fruit or Turkish dates.
Strong? Yes....certainly compared to much of my rotation, but nothing to be frightened of. Not an "all day" blend but as a deeply flavored reward for a long hard day this one is in my top 5.
