A lot has been said comparing the latest version of (Bell's) Three Nuns and it's predecessors, but all I've ever had is the modern take. And that I can tell you, is pretty good. It's dominating character is some tasty dark-fired Kentucky. The Virgini... Read More
a and Burley fall in behind the DFK with Burley coming in second most but not all of the time. The cut is curly, a.k.a. coin, and they are not tightly spun. The coins are small and fragile, basically lending themselves to an easy rub-out and they have a good moisture level. You could try to stack these but they're too small to fold. If you've had Mac Baren Dark Twist, the cut is the same. In fact, the two tobaccos are very similar. In my experience the Bell's is fuller bodied and a bit stronger in the nicotine department, but the flavors are the same...smokey without the Latakia campfire. I enjoyed this one fresh off finishing a Dark Twist 100g tin to make a side-by-side comparison for myself and I think I prefer the Mac Baren, but because they are so similar this could just be the tins I had. The Mac Baren was 7 years old, and the Three Nuns only a few months and I know that can make a big difference. If either of these sound good to you, get a tin of each. Three nuns should be tried by all. Tobaccos with pedigrees as old as this one that are still around deserve a try. Enjoy. UPDATE: Since I posted this review, Three Nuns has expanded to a nine nuns lineup: Red, Green and Yellow. It's worth mentioning that the Green tin contains Perique like the original version by Bell's. If you're looking for something akin to older versions, you may want to start with Three Nuns Green.

s a simple enjoyment that’s worth recommending. Your first contact with Three Nuns regular will probably involve a sniff or two of the product upon cracking the tin. Notes of figs or fruit cake hit your nostrils. But it’s the char light that reveals the blend’s true character: fig bread mixed with the nut-like quality of the burley fused with the coffee and chock flavor that is borne of the dark-fired Kentucky (without the smoked meat flavor that often comes with DFK).
I can’t help imagining in a Danish cloister, called the Mac Baren Convent, three nuns are having a grand old time enjoying a breakfast of fig cake, nuts, coffee, and a bit of chocolate. And you can, too. 4.5 stars. Read Less

This is a very interesting and surprisingly good tobacco. It's Virginia-forward but it's difficult to tell where Virginia ends and other components begin. I'd attribute this to a well-concocted but somewhat prominent casing which is a bit too sweet for my liking (hence the docked 1/2 star), but not too intrusive to make it an aromatic. It doesn't burn hot for me at all, it burns well (1 relight per bowl) and is very forgiving when it comes to packing techniques.
I also think this is a perfect 1st tobacco for new pipe smokers: it tastes great and is full-flavored and since it's not too complex, doesn't require a developed palate to enjoy.
Great tobacco, will buy more and will add it to my rotation. Read Less

ing time which was not the case with the "old" version & the coins seemed to be smaller "back in the day." The initial tin aroma was a nice, smoke fired tobacco smell with a bit of sour note. One might notice a slight acrid taste initially but after a little is burned off, you will get a little burst of sweet, natural tobacco flavors that meld together fairly well.
Three Nuns has not earned legendary status for no reason & this newer blend works OK for me. As good or better than most blends of this genre. Mac Baren's Three Nuns is strong enough to satisfy and delivers a semi-sweet smoke well above mid strength. It starts tasting pretty good a short while after the charring light to the end... not much waiting for the flavor to develop. It can be smoked right out of the tin if one desires to do so. I'm sure it would be much better with a little age & will cellar some for later consumption. It smokes/burns well all the way to the finish.

Maybe I just expected too much after hearing the hype around this blend, but I found this extremely disappointing. It does have a some bright Virginia flavors, and some earthy/nutty flavors from the Kentucky's, but they're very light flavors and do ... Read More
not make up for the poor smoking mechanics. I've tried smoking rubbed out loosely, rubbed out very fine, and just folded and stuffed, but none of them worked well for me. It was an infuriating combination of refusing to stay lit and smoking harshly/biting my tongue when it actually stays lit. The jar that I have has been almost completely untouched now for probably a year, because there's never really a time when it sounds appealing to me. Read Less

There is a reason why this blend has been around so long. It's an all day, everyday smoke.

I have not had the original Va-Per blend (or any of the recent new releases), so this review is not a comparison.
At first, this blend did not appeal to me. I liked the tin note; it reminded me of rich fermenting hay with notes of dark fruits. My... Read More
first few bowls did not deliver on that unfortunately--it smoked hot and gave me an ashy palate profile.
However, after a break and some patience, the blend redeemed itself, showing dark fruit notes throughout the bowl, with a nutty aftertaste. I find it a very pleasant flavour now.
Mechanically, this blend burns well from first light to fine white ash, if it's handled properly. This blend seems to like smaller pipes or at least shallower bowls. Nicotine content is light/medium.
I recommend this blend to English smokers and adventurous aromaticons.
Cheers to all! Read Less

ittle over a week of smoking this in my rotation it has grown on me. It’s mild compared to a lot of the “va-pers” I smoke but it is a nice smoke for me in the morning and goes great with coffee thanks to the Dark Fired. Sweet hay notes mixed with crushed dry walnuts. It doesn’t sound to appealing but it really works in this Blend. Came ready to smoke right out of the tin. I also love the small roll cut coins. In short this didnt blow me away but I did have many moments of relaxation. Worth a Try! Read Less

I'm not talking about aging, though it probably would age well, I'm an escudo fan, and at first I wasn't a fan of three nunns, but after smoking a few bowls, I find my self going to it more often. Therss something in it I like, something different.

There is a time for this smoke, I loved it during the colder months, but have no interest in it during desert summers.

This is definitely a vintage blend, one of the Hall of Fame of pipe tobaccos.
Origin: 19th century, J & F Bell, Glasgow, Scotland, which later founded the famous “Imperial Tobacco Group” together with six other tobacco companies in 1901 (now “Imp... Read More
erial Brands PLC”, Bristol, UK). TREE NUNS was produced until 1980 and was available until the late 80s. THREE NUNS is now blended and manufactured by MacBaren, and still sold under the old, original brand of BELL’S. I am sure there is a story or an explanation behind the weird name of this blend, since nuns do not normally smoke pipe-tobacco.
Loose spun curly cut discs in the size of small coins. Surprisingly, the moisture in tin is quite low and the tobacco therefore rather dry, but still ok to smoke right out of the tin to start with. Later you may keep it under a little moisture. Nice for a change, since pipe smokers nowadays usually struggle with too high moisture in tin and wet tobacco. Stuffing and lighting is easy. Occasionally hot but steady burning. Very skilfully selected Virginias; most is dark and robust. They release aromas of bread, yeast and a scrumptious natural tobacco flavour. The Dark Fired Kentucky donates tasteful spice, wood and earth flavours to the blend, no camp-fire smokiness, though.
In earlier times, I guess before 1980, THREE NUNS always contained Perique. What a nuisance that Perique has been taken out now! I am sure a touch of Perique would fit in perfectly. I may try to add some myself one day. Nevertheless, even without Perique, THREE NUNS is a fantastic and tasteful mixture, even if it must be fairly different from the original. The sweetness is on my limit. Slightly less would make it more vintage like. And there is this pleasant, hidden, kind of outmoded, dark, soury touch, typical to so many real vintage blends. I love this. Over all THREE NUNS is an outstanding blend with great character and taste that I highly recommend to all Virginia, Va/Per, Va/Ky and Va/Bur smokers. Read Less

Bought this because I have heard it's the best stuff in the world. Burns dry and hot. The room note isn't wife approved and tasted like old man's Cologne smelled like. Won't buy again.

Relatively smooth with some pepper notes, seems to burn hot. Bought mine when it was $9.99 a tin, now $16.15 no thanks as there are better cheaper options out there. Escudo comes to mind.

st bowl was a tad harsh by my fault of packing a bit too tight and smoking it too quickly. the next couple bowls I smoked I eased up and really let the flavor come to me.
