About This Pipe Tobacco

Developed by Joe Lankford, Hogshead is the first pure Virginia blend in Seattle Pipe Club's pipe tobacco lineup, showcasing select Virginias from Africa, Brazil, and the United States. Available here in a 2oz tin.

From the Tin: In Colonial days, Virginia cultivated the nest tobaccos. Traditionally shipped in giant barrels called hogsheads, farmers packed their precious leaf. Our Hogshead is a blend of old Virginias from Africa, Brazil and the United States. Pressed into an easy to use plug, Hogshead evokes the greatest Virginia tobaccos. Enjoy Joe Lankford's exquisite Virginia blend. This just might be your perfect Virginia.

Chinese Scalpers Reviewing
January 16, 2026
Product: Seattle Pipe Club Hogshead 2oz
This is an OK Virginia plug, but nothing special. It smokes cool, but only mild natural flavor from the tobacco. Some aging might help. And for the 中国人 scalpers who want to buy it all and resell at a markup - stick to trading Pokemon cards. This industry is a bad business model for that behavior. Fake 5 Star reviews to create Artificial Scarcity only works on here. Most of us will find the same product elsewhere even if you buy it all here. We'll then shrug our shoulders at the FOMO and laugh at you. Get a real job....Read More

Just received my order. Full disclosure, I've never had the Sutliff produced Hogshead so this is the very first tin I've ever purchased.

First impressions are promising. For anyone in fear, no it does not taste like a C&D product. Sweet, tart, and bready Virginia's. Reminds me of Elizabethan
but without perique. It's very tame with no surprises. Just a good solid everyday Virginia....Read More
Not bad, but found wanting
February 03, 2026
Product: Seattle Pipe Club Hogshead 2oz
Hogshead has the distinctive tin note of vinegar that I associate with high quality aged Virginia. The cake (plug?) easily broke apart, without need of cutting implement. Was pretty moist, but I found that it didn't really need any drying time after smoking several bowls.

Found the strength a
nd body of tobacco to be very mild - initially it felt like I was smoking an ultralight cigarette. As the bowl burned down, it did intensify a little as expected of a Virginia blend.

Throughout the smoke, there's a consistent tingle of nicotine like it wanted to bite but didn't. Flavor wise, the blend is rather one dimensional and very mild. Mainly a sweetness like rock candy or sweet tea diluted by the water after the ice melts. Subtle flavor that reminds me of sun warmed sweet feed on the finish. You get a little bit of green vegetation on the retro hale.

Having never tried previous versions of Hogshead, maybe this is a case of mismanaged expectations on my part, but this blend didn't have near the rich, bready sweetness that I expected and want from a good Virginia blend - it pales in comparison to Down Yonder or Give Me Liberty or even the Stokkebye blends. I also note that it's been incredibly cold in my part of the world, so I may jar this up and try it in the summer to see if the profile becomes less delicate in a warmer climate. But as of now, there are better Virginias blends that provide the taste I want from one.

If you review this just to complain and cause the tobacco to have a false rating you are….

If you review any tobacco to complain about the scarcity of the product and give it a rating based on that and don’t review the actual tobacco you’re a piece of shit. This one’s decent 3.5/5 There’s alot better Virginia blends out there and there’s a lot worse. Breasd and hay, smokes well. Better with age like the Sutliff version I’m sure. Why leave a review saying these reviews ain’t reviews and leave half a star. Your an idiot...Read More
