If you're a fan of Plum Pudding Special Reserve, you are going to love this. It's the same PPSR you expect, but with an extra layer of bourbon flavor that actually comes through in the final product. The flaked crumble cake gives an interesting presentation that I haven't seen before. It rubs out easily, and is the perfect moisture right out of the tin. This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. A standard; a classic. So terrific when your pipe aquires a taste for it after a few bowls. I cannot state enough how beloved Orlik Golden Sliced is. It is as perfect of a flake as one can hope for. First go with Mississippi River Rum Barrel Aged… Peeled open that tin and really got my nose in there. Damn! I wish my cologne smelled this good!!! Dark sweetness, and a bit of spice right up front and plenty of it! An earthy slightly fig kind of chocolate rounded out that tin note. The best tin note I’ve ever experienced, no contest. The 1/4 slices didn’t feel as moist as many reviews led me to believe they would be. Crumbled nicely, and packing the bowl was effortless. Didn’t take to flame as readily as I expected and a few relights were necessary early on, after that it burned cool and clean to the bottom of the bowl. The flavor wasn’t what I expected right off, as the tin had me elated and expecting a bit more. After I got into it a bit, the flavors built, and began playing with my not so sensitive palate. I don’t drink rum, never cared for it so I can’t relate any “rum flavors” imparted by the cask. Sweetness came first, a mellow very creamy sweetness which was carried through by the almost physical feel to the texture of the smoke… thick and creamy filling my mouth and ol factory. So far, I have to say it was perfection. The flavors once the bowl was burning properly (next time it’ll get 30 mins or so drying time) were heavenly blend of breadiness, creamy sweetness, slightly smoky, no rough edges and no one baccy playing more of role than another. The exception is say is the Perique which I’d say was a no-show til the last 1/3 of the bowl. Smoked this first bowl in my Molina bent apple, and since I don’t do rum E&J XO, a nice sweet brandy did just fine. The only thing I can add, is that I wish this was available by the pound! Loved it. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!! Read Less

Look, Captain Black is one of those tobaccos you might have to stash under the couch cushions when your pipe-snob friends stop by—you know, the ones who only smoke blends hand-picked by monks on a Himalayan mountaintop. Yeah, sure, you can grab this stuff at your local liquor store or even Walmart (gasp!)—but let's face it: it's ridiculously delicious. Burns perfectly, stays cool and dry, and smells so good even smoke-haters seem suspiciously drawn into its magical smoke cloud at the park. Seriously, Karen, if you hate smoke so much, why are you standing directly downwind, hmm? I've loved this blend shamelessly for decades, and I'm not even sorry. Captain Black forever! Read Less

Escudo is well represented in my cellar and for good reason. This blend ages with the best of them. Although, I really enjoy this blend with just a year of age on it. At this time when you crack a tin it has an incredible tin note of muscadines. The smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. The blend supports a wonderful mix of fruit, spice and a touch of hay (particularly when it is young). Give this one a try if you have not done so already. Read Less

I don't write reviews often, but this one seemed to be a given. As is my usual practice, I opened a tin of Peterson EMP, the day after I got it, and the day before I smoked it. The introduction of air to a vacuum sealed tin always tends to excite the poor tobacco that has been deprived, and it gets it pretty excited. Well I must say I was incredibly happy to have EMP back. From the moment I opened the tin I could remember the wonderful scent of Dunhill EMP. From the moment of the 1st burn, everything was right in the world again. I had very high hopes when I cracked the lid on this tin. The tin note was overwhelmingly powerful. A nice delicious vanilla creamy cupcake smell that even Boswell would have trouble competing with. Those hopes faded a bit when I lit a bowl up. Although not as much sweet or vanilla taste as I had hoped for, if you sip it slowly and slightly breathe through your nose you will get a little sweet vanilla fairly often. Drying for about 30 minutes prior to smoking and packing it a bit lighter than normal helps as well. Pack too tight it gets wet and hot. The room note is fantastic. My wife, who hates all my tobacco except for a couple Boswell brands like raspberry cream or berry cobbler says this one actually smells terrific and I'll have to give it that. It makes your house smell like a cake shop. Absolutely amazing.

The tobacco quality in this is excellent. Far and above any overcased drug store brand you will ever smoke, just not as sweet or cakey as you expect from the tin note. I’m hoping this will satisfy my sweet craving when I want to smoke something other than Nightcap or Sqaudron Leader. This will likely become a tobacco that I stock up 5-8 tins of as it does make for a nice smoke. Read Less

This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! McConnell Scottish Flake and Scottish Cake are truly, uniquely magnificent. As an everyday pipe smoker, I am hard pressed to 1.) find a blend which displays mature flavours even while young 2.) find a blend which is neither too strong nor too light 3.) find a blend which has adequate complexity and strength, but will gracefully fade into the background if needed, and 4.) find a blend which really just tastes like good tobacco, instead of having a more distinctive flavour which, while excellent, bores you after 5 tins (I'm looking at you, Wessex Brown). If you are a VA smoker, don't try this--don't buy it. I don't want it to get too popular, I want all of it. It is too perfect to share. 10/10, will buy again (and again and again and again) Read Less

I am NOT A fan of this type os Aromatic tobacco. So you may wonder WHY I bought a tin? All I can say is that I was suckered into buying it because of the promotion, the packaging, and my deep respect for MOST of what C&D produces. I like to try almost everything in pipe tobacco, at least once. Consider myself a connoisseur and I believe that I shouldn't judge a thing until I've tried it. Big mistake. This blend is EXACTLY why I generally don't like many aromatics. The taste of Maple, or Brown Sugar or pancakes simply does not belong in my pipe bowl. I ate pancakes this very morning. I don't need to smoke them. The taste of this heavily sweetened, overly flavored tobacco was so cloying that I can't get the unpleasant taste out of my mouth yet. The classic "Cavendish" sweetness that I most hate is redolent in this blend. If you love Captian Black White or any other of the thousands of cheaply made, overly sweet stuff your grandfather smoked for thirty years, then you will love this. I'm an English, Balkan, Va/Per, Va/Burley, straight Virginia smoker, and I know what I like. I also know what I hate, and this personifies everything I HATE in pipe tobacco. I hope I can get the taste out of my mouth some day, and I pray that I can rid my new Nording Prince of it's fouling aftertaste. Buyer BEWARE!! Read Less

It should be evident that this blend is for those who truly love Latakia. Tin aroma: Imagine a forest floor charred from a recent fire is starting to grow back and the morning dew has moistened the rich earth beneath the smoked bark creating a deep dark wet velvety musk. Taste: The latakia is boldly forward while the other tobaccos play an essential yet supporting role. It is not a complex blend but neither boring. Its somewhat lack of complexity is made up by its dedication to a lush, thick and creamy delivery of plentiful clouds of smoke. There are some things left better without complexity… If you enjoy your coffee black, your chocolate dark and your meat gamey you will enjoy Old Ironsides. Read Less

A lot has been said comparing the latest version of (Bell's) Three Nuns and it's predecessors, but all I've ever had is the modern take. And that I can tell you, is pretty good. It's dominating character is some tasty dark-fired Kentucky. The Virginia and Burley fall in behind the DFK with Burley coming in second most but not all of the time. The cut is curly, a.k.a. coin, and they are not tightly spun. The coins are small and fragile, basically lending themselves to an easy rub-out and they have a good moisture level. You could try to stack these but they're too small to fold. If you've had Mac Baren Dark Twist, the cut is the same. In fact, the two tobaccos are very similar. In my experience the Bell's is fuller bodied and a bit stronger in the nicotine department, but the flavors are the same...smokey without the Latakia campfire. I enjoyed this one fresh off finishing a Dark Twist 100g tin to make a side-by-side comparison for myself and I think I prefer the Mac Baren, but because they are so similar this could just be the tins I had. The Mac Baren was 7 years old, and the Three Nuns only a few months and I know that can make a big difference. If either of these sound good to you, get a tin of each. Three nuns should be tried by all. Tobaccos with pedigrees as old as this one that are still around deserve a try. Enjoy. UPDATE: Since I posted this review, Three Nuns has expanded to a nine nuns lineup: Red, Green and Yellow. It's worth mentioning that the Green tin contains Perique like the original version by Bell's. If you're looking for something akin to older versions, you may want to start with Three Nuns Green.
