This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! When this first came out some years ago , it didnt do it for me . Got a tin recently in a trade to try it again , it's been 18 years or more ... Man , do I love this blend ! It's a no brainer to light and keep lit and smokes wonderfully to the dry bottom . This is no gooper , as a friend of mine would say . The aroma is pleasant . If you enjoy a mildly+ flavored black Cavendish , it's one to try . The flavoring itself is superb and it does have a natural type taste . An all dayer in my book . I'm thrilled to see it in bulk Read Less

This blend is something almost mystical. It’s definitely a hybrid of VA and English. It’s somewhere in the middle. Smoky meaty bold savory and salty. The smoke is thick and chewy in the best way. Nice warming nicotine level. Burns perfectly out of the jar. Which might I add I love its jarred already. Burns down to dense grey and white ash. If you are looking for something that is unique and delicious this is it. Now we have to wait for it to be restocked. Read Less

This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. A standard; a classic. So terrific when your pipe aquires a taste for it after a few bowls. I cannot state enough how beloved Orlik Golden Sliced is. It is as perfect of a flake as one can hope for. Escudo is well represented in my cellar and for good reason. This blend ages with the best of them. Although, I really enjoy this blend with just a year of age on it. At this time when you crack a tin it has an incredible tin note of muscadines. The smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. The blend supports a wonderful mix of fruit, spice and a touch of hay (particularly when it is young). Give this one a try if you have not done so already. Read Less

Now I'm the first to admit that this review may be quite subjective - but this tobacco has made it to the top of my list and has become my all-day smoke; to the extent that I'm hesitant filling my pipe with any of the other great tobaccos in my collection.

I love everything about Presbyterian, starting with opening the tin, feasting my eyes on the coarsely cut mixture of bright and dark leaves. This is accompanied by the delicious musty, earthy, and spicy aroma. The cut is ideal for the way I fill my pipe (similar, but not identical, to the 'air pocket' method).

The tobacco lights easily, even when slightly moist from a freshly opened tin. When it has dried out just a little, it can be smoked all the way down from the first light, although I would rarely smoke a bowl in one sitting; that is no problem though, as it maintains its delicious taste and aroma, even after cooling down and sitting for some time before a relight.

As a lover of Orientals, I find these tobaccos to be the star of the show, perfectly complemented by the Latakia and Virginia. I have always loved Latakia, and still do, but these days I prefer its use as a condiment rather than a major ingredient (as found in many English and Balkan blends); and in this regard, Presbyterian really shines. The components combine to give the tobacco a somewhat sweet, almost aromatic note, but one can sense that it is all natural, without any casing or flavoring.

I love retro-haling, and this brings out even more flavors, adding a delightfully pungent note to the smoke; and to me that must be Presbytarian's greatest achievement - providing so many delicious flavors without resorting to anything artificial.

As a previous reviewer has mentioned, my main regret is the fact that it is not available in bulk.

I don't write reviews often, but this one seemed to be a given. As is my usual practice, I opened a tin of Peterson EMP, the day after I got it, and the day before I smoked it. The introduction of air to a vacuum sealed tin always tends to excite the poor tobacco that has been deprived, and it gets it pretty excited. Well I must say I was incredibly happy to have EMP back. From the moment I opened the tin I could remember the wonderful scent of Dunhill EMP. From the moment of the 1st burn, everything was right in the world again. The more I smoke of this the more I love it. 16 bucks for 100 grams. That isn’t cheap gas station pipe tobacco prices but for a quality blend that seems a very fair price. This should give almost anyone the ability to buy a can or two. This is my first experience with a Rattray’s blend. Amazingly cool and flavorful. Very clean on the palate. Definitely a lighter blend than I usually smoke. I actually enjoyed this because of the lighter smoking. I realized after smoking this how flavorful and satisfying a lighter blend can be. All I have smoked for years is full flavored blends with pretty good strength. Bottom of the bowl will have you craving another one because of how clean and refreshing it is. No thick oils or tar covering my mouth after the pipe. No bite. A broken flake that burns as well as a shag cut. It never ceases to amaze me what a fine blending house can do with two or three tobacco’s (this is made by Kolhase and Kopp in Germany for Rattrays). Comes somewhat moist in can. Lovely grassy, lemon scent from can with the characteristic raisin smell of Virginia blends). Dried for 15 minutes. After the charring light pipe stays lit until bottom of bowl. Bought 100 gram can (now wishing I had gotten 500 grams). Going to be my after work pipe daily until it is gone. If you love this tobacco and cannot get it in stock you may love Blairgowrie by Druquer & Sons (Blairgowrie is a little bit more stout and contains some Latakia). I could see pretty much any pipe smoker enjoying this blend. Will be purchasing more Rattray’s blends in the future. Read Less

I've been smoking it for a couple days now, and it seems to get a bit better each time. It wasn't terribly moist out of the tin, but I do reccomend a little dry time. It seems more of a crumble kake than a plug to me, which I found odd, wasn't exactly expecting that, but I treated as a plug all the same slicing thinly through the layers to create a shag cut.

The latakia is a bit more mild than other English blends, certainly not a "lat-bomb". The earthy Virginia comes through enough to be noticed, bit it too isnt over bearing and compliments the orientals well with a touch of sour earthiness.

Overall it's an enjoyable mild english plug, not much utterly remarkable about it but it's good. And imagine it will only get better with age. Definitely worth a try if you haven't, but be patient with it and give her time to breath. Read Less
