Best Selling Tinned Pipe Tobaccos

This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental - but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. Escudo is well represented in my cellar and for good reason. This blend ages with the best of them. Although, I really enjoy this blend with just a year of age on it. At this time when you crack a tin it has an incredible tin note of muscadines. The smell takes me back to my childhood and stopping at fruit stands on the side of the road with my mom. The blend not only smells great but it also taste pretty darn good too. The blend supports a wonderful mix of fruit, spice and a touch of hay (particularly when it is young). I don't write reviews often, but this one seemed to be a given. As is my usual practice, I opened a tin of Peterson EMP, the day after I got it, and the day before I smoked it. The introduction of air to a vacuum sealed tin always tends to excite the poor tobacco that has been deprived, and it gets it pretty excited. Well I must say I was incredibly happy to have EMP back. From the moment I opened the tin I could remember the wonderful scent of Dunhill EMP. From the moment of the 1st burn, everything was right in the world again. Look, Captain Black is one of those tobaccos you might have to stash under the couch cushions when your pipe-snob friends stop by—you know, the ones who only smoke blends hand-picked by monks on a Himalayan mountaintop. Yeah, sure, you can grab this stuff at your local liquor store or even Walmart (gasp!)—but let's face it: it's ridiculously delicious. Burns perfectly, stays cool and dry, and smells so good even smoke-haters seem suspiciously drawn into its magical smoke cloud at the park. Ugh, I hate saying it... It's easily in my top 5 favorite tobacco of all time. If I only had this to smoke for the rest of my life, I would die a happy man. I wasn't blown away by this at first. However, the more I smoke the more I reach for it. This is a nice mild blend, burns well to a nice ash and takes to a flame easily. I will be buying more, this is really started to grow on me. As a follow up to this review, I just bought a larger tin, this has really grown on me and moving it to 5 stars. Read Less

I don’t see any reviews!Just gripes!It would be a shame if artists quit painting,because there was already a Michael Angelo,and we as pipe smokers are very lucky to have master blenders like Jeremy,at Cornell and Diehl! These small batch blends are a great thing let’s not gripe about them!Buy them if you want give an honest review so the next person can decide! This is the blend for the back porch when the wife and the rest of the world are in bed, the dogs are curled up somewhere else, the traffic noise died down, fire pit going, you’ve spent all day banging the corporate drum while boss makes a dollar and you make a dime, and you pour one up, stuff this in a big briar and say “man, what a day, tomorrow is Friday”. This is a very good blend, but not for $25/tin - Capstan Blue has lost it's value for me... there are a number of Virginias I have found that are close enough for nearly half the price. This is one of C&D's core blends for a reason. Throw a rock and chances are you'll hit 1 or 2 pipe smokers who've tried it. And at the end of the day, it seems to elicit a love it or hate it response. I love it for many reasons. Firstly, I'm a burley man through and through, and BF delivers. Secondly, it brings the nic and the strength without blowing out my palate for the day. And last but not least, this is a very simple blend that takes very little thought. It's best sipped, especially in a Missouri Meerschaum cob of absolutely any size. I can smoke bowl after bowl of this while drawing up spec sheets and doing paperwork. Awesome blend again C&D! To me, its the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Smoky, sweet-honey mesquite bbq goodness all the way down the bowl. Lately, I've been strolling down Codger Lane quite a bit. After years of seeking only premium tins like anything less was not worth my time, I've learned that the more I think I know about tobacco, the more I have yet to learn. To my surprise, with rare exception, I have found that time-honored so-called “codger” blends are some of the best. Half and Half is no exception. Based on the simple principal of offering an equally Virginia/Burley blend when the majority of pipe tobaccos were either mostly or all Burley, Half and Half made it's own niche. It has a mellow pleasant smell in the pouch/can, and most people enjoy the lingering aroma in the room. It's probably one of three aromas that people lovingly identify as someone smoking a pipe, even if they know nothing about pipes and tobacco. The textures are soft and easy to load, catch light and burn at a nice rate, and the flavor is consistent from matches to ashes. The taste is mild and pleasant. It reminds me of sweet corn, but the formula contains many different flavors and notes from the common alcohol/anise combo to less common kitchen spices and nuts. A flavor profile often imitated, Half and Half is the original in its category. Like many old recipes, it's good because there's nothing wrong. It doesn't need to change or improve, it will always be successful. Although it's production has changed hands a few times, I've heard it said it remains remarkably unchanged. A lot has been said comparing the latest version of (Bell's) Three Nuns and it's predecessors, but all I've ever had is the modern take. And that I can tell you, is pretty good. It's dominating character is some tasty dark-fired Kentucky. The Virginia and Burley fall in behind the DFK with Burley coming in second most but not all of the time. The cut is curly, a.k.a. coin, and they are not tightly spun. The coins are small and fragile, basically lending themselves to an easy rub-out and they have a good moisture level. You could try to stack these but they're too small to fold. If you've had Mac Baren Dark Twist, the cut is the same. In fact, the two tobaccos are very similar. In my experience the Bell's is fuller bodied and a bit stronger in the nicotine department, but the flavors are the same...smokey without the Latakia campfire. I enjoyed this one fresh off finishing a Dark Twist 100g tin to make a side-by-side comparison for myself and I think I prefer the Mac Baren, but because they are so similar this could just be the tins I had. The Mac Baren was 7 years old, and the Three Nuns only a few months and I know that can make a big difference. If either of these sound good to you, get a tin of each. Three nuns should be tried by all. Tobaccos with pedigrees as old as this one that are still around deserve a try. Enjoy. It's worth mentioning that the Green tin contains Perique like the original version by Bell's. If you're looking for something akin to older versions, you may want to start with Three Nuns Green. Been smoking this for Years!. It is dry, BUT, I add slices of Orange Peel when i first open the bag. Shake it up and let it sit sealed for a day-ish.... good thing is... if it gets too moist, i can let it sit with the bag open until i get it just right.... I am NOT A fan of this type os Aromatic tobacco. So you may wonder WHY I bought a tin? All I can say is that I was suckered into buying it because of the promotion, the packaging, and my deep respect for MOST of what C&D produces. I like to try almost everything in pipe tobacco, at least once. Consider myself a connoisseur and I believe that I shouldn't judge a thing until I've tried it. Big mistake. This blend is EXACTLY why I generally don't like many aromatics. The taste of Maple, or Brown Sugar or pancakes simply does not belong in my pipe bowl. I ate pancakes this very morning. I don't need to smoke them. The taste of this heavily sweetened, overly flavored tobacco was so cloying that I can't get the unpleasant taste out of my mouth yet. The classic "Cavendish" sweetness that I most hate is redolent in this blend. If you love Captian Black White or any other of the thousands of cheaply made, overly sweet stuff your grandfather smoked for thirty years, then you will love this. I'm an English, Balkan, Va/Per, Va/Burley, straight Virginia smoker, and I know what I like. I also know what I hate, and this personifies everything I HATE in pipe tobacco. I hope I can get the taste out of my mouth some day, and I pray that I can rid my new Nording Prince of it's fouling aftertaste. Buyer BEWARE!! Read Less

St. Bruno has been around a while and had several variations. I only recently added this to my rotation, so I'm reviewing the most recent version on it's own merits. Let me start by saying this is probably not what most people call an aromatic. This has none of the overly chemical top casings added that cover the natural flavors of the tobaccos. What we have here is a very nice VA/Dark Fired Kentucky flake where the rich Virginias seem aged to perfection. This is not a light VA flake of grassy notes, but rather a spicy, rich, peppery flavor some would compare to ketchup or BBQ sauce. That's not to say St. Bruno tastes like either, but it has that same sweet and spiciness with an obvious vinegar aroma. In fact, I've never had any rust in my tins, but inside they place a card saying that the tin could show some signs of rust due to the vinegar used as a preservative. But, that does nothing to harm this great flake. In fact, it's all the richer for it. It's part of what sets St. Bruno apart in taste. The flakes come on the moist side but were smoke-able, and after a couple of days of drying they were perfect. Even fresh they rub out easily for loading and smoke consistently throughout the bowl with little variation to the taste and flavor. I do feel the nicotine here. It's not too strong, but it's not a daybreak smoke either. If you haven't tried St. Bruno and are a fan of sweet & spicy flake tobaccos, this could be just what you're looking for? UPDATE: this flake ages superbly. The sugars in the Virginias show up as white streaks in the flakes and combine with the vinegar to easily make this sweet enough to smoke anytime of day. As it aged I felt less nicotine and overall it smokes much sweeter. Also since I first reviewed this, I've had the ready-rubbed version and cannot tell any difference if you're going to rub out your flakes anyway. And, yes, some rust did eventually appear on the edges of the tin. Surprisingly though, these flakes hold a nice moisture level for quite some time if kept in the tin. Enjoy. Read Less

Simply a solid choice for a sweet but balanced experience. I really enjoy this in my rocker looking at the woods and listening to the creek. It kind of grew on me, now it’s like an old friend. My wife hates the smell of all tobacco, but she hates this the least 😉 Read Less

Much upset for the guys who cellared 100+ tins of Dunhill tobacco to flip, only to find Peterson bought the rights to Dunhill's excellent blends.
Same factory, same blend, same process as Dunhill's Flake.
The only thing that's changed is the sticker on the front.
Great solid Brown Virginias, sweet grassy smoke which gets much better with age. Read Less
