Captain Black: Royal 1.5oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-537-0003

Made under the Lane Limited name — a tobacco manufacturer with roots dating to Dresden, Germany, in 1890 — Captain Black is among the world's most iconic lines of pipe tobacco, having made its debut in 1956 and eventually becoming America's best-selling pipe tobacco brand. For many pipe smokers, Captain Black's blends represent the archetype of Aromatic mixtures, redolent of nostalgia and conjuring memories of times when pipe-smoking was more commonplace in society.

Marked by a royal-blue color palette, Captain Black's aptly named Royal mixture combines Black and Gold Cavendishes with toppings of vanilla, molasses, caramel, and subtle liqueur for a delightfully complex flavor profile and enticing room note.

The Classic

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
My grandad smoked it, my dad smoked it, and of course I do. The more I explore tobacco the more I realize it's not my ideal blend, but the room note is pure nostalgia. Deliciously warm and smooth with a hint of leathery spice.
Royal for a reason.

Definitely better than the original, but not as good as the platinum. It's clean, it's crisp, it's light and enjoyable, but lacks any real distinction or personality. However since you can get it just about anywhere, not a bad standby if you want something you know won't let you down when you're out and about....Read More

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
They seem to know what they are doing, they've been doing it for 120 years now. Perfect moisture, not dry, not to wet, decent flavor, slow burn. Best of all this is sold at even convince stores, no problem finding this tobacco
My Current Favorite Daily Smoke

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
I started working my way through the Captain Black line up due to my grandfather having smoked it in the 1970's. I enjoyed the original, then really enjoyed the Gold version, but when I landed on Royal! Wow. Just brilliant.

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
When I first started to smoke a pipe this was my very first tobacco purchase and the first one that I packed into my pipe. It's good budget tobacco made by a classic and well known company. If you are just starting your pipe smoking journey this a good starting point in that journey.
Royal Disappointment

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
Despite what my esteemed peers in the reviews section would say, I found this the most lackadaisical of the Captain Black tobaccos. The strength is on the light side, but not too light. The flavor is just simply too bland for me. Having just gone through and sampled each Captain Black tobacco recently I found this one to lack much redeeming quality for a second buy. While not revolting or nauseating, it is certainly just a basic flavor that doesn’t do much for me in terms of memorability or eliciting desire for more. I smoked this sample pouch for a week and found it to be a rather boring affair. In fact, on one bowl I thought to myself it felt as though I were ‘going through the motions’ as I smoked the pipe; something that should never occur for a truly contemplative, restful, and enjoyable pipe smoking experience. Rather, a good bowl should leave the smoker feeling at ease, and long for more time to commune with his favorite blend. This one, did no such things. At least it did not have the sickly sweet taste of Captain Black Cherry, though. Still, it was just a disappointment, for what should be the Captain’s best....Read More

Tastes good and gets plenty of compliments from those around me. Burns well with no bite. Reasonable price. My favorite OTC blend of those I've tried so far.
Better than the white label

Unassuming daily smoke

Product: Captain Black Royal 1.5oz
If people would leave their snobbishness behind they would realize that the CB line provide an unassuming pleasant aromatic line. Royal is a step above original in taste.
Royal is part of my regular rotation (don't judge me).

Captain Black unfortunately gets pigeonholed into drugstore fair. They are actually quality blends at a reasonable price – Win/Win. Both Royal and Dark are in my regular rotation. I like a good solid English blend with the rest of 'em, and I like purity flakes and VA/Pers, I even like Burley blends sometimes, but sometimes...sometimes I like an aromatic too. Captain Black is great for this. The Original (White) is quite good, but Royal just steps up the sweetness to where I like it. It's ultra-mild, a fine ribbon easy for packing and lighting, burns away to very little ash at a moderate rate. It has a discernible topping that isn't quite vanilla, but certainly is generically sweet (I assume a glycerol humectant?) but it doesn't seem too artificial or ruin the natural flavors of the tobacco. It is all Cavendish so the sweetness could be a result of the process too. I don't know what they use, but I like it. It makes for an easy anytime smoke that's good all year round. It's also great for beginners until they get a feel for what they can tolerate. If you can't smoke CBR, you need a different hobby. If you just can't bring yourself to try Captain Black, just go ahead and get Lane Limited 1-Q. I'm pretty sure they are one-in-the-same. Why 1-Q can be rated so highly and Royal be often overlooked because it's Captain Black is beyond my comprehension....Read More
