About This Pipe Tobacco

Sir Walter Raleigh pipe tobacco was first introduced in 1927 and is currently produced in the United States. Sir Walter himself was introduced quite a bit earlier, the 1500s in fact, and became known for many deeds of valor and courage, as well as the man who popularized smoking in Europe. Sir Walter Raleigh's Aromatic is a unique blend of aged Burley and Virginia tobaccos flavored with imported French and Dutch liqueurs for a rich aroma and a mellow, comfortable smoke.

Great for Beginners!

Product: Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic 7oz
I just began my journey in smoking pipes a few weeks ago. My first smoke was Petersons EMP, then Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding, both of which are enjoyable though a bit difficult as a beginner to get to light and smoke smoothly. I am a long enjoyer of Islay scotch and Bohea/Lapsang tea, so I know I have a deep potential to love English blends. This being said, as a complete beginner, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic was incredibly approachable, enjoyable, an easy light, easy pack, and very enjoyable morning pipe to pair with a breakfast coffee. I see myself reaching more for this as a beginner than the two aforementioned English blends, as it seems much more forgiving for a beginner like me. I highly recommend this venerable codger blend for new pipe smokers like me. The room note is nostalgic and pleasant, the flavor is mild and sweet on the tongue. In some way, it seems to correspond to how I imagined pipe smoking to taste like. I know in time this will be a cornerstone in my eventual "rotation"....Read More

Sir Walter was the go-to tobacco for many of the older generation. As a kid growing up in the 1960s, I remember George, the 70 year old gentleman that lived next door, always sitting on his front porch with a pipe loaded with Sir Walter. It's a great blend for beginners, and in fact, many in my generation started right here. Believe it or not, I still keep Sir Walter in my rotation even to this day....Read More
An aromatic for people that usually don’t like aromatics.

I’m not sure why I haven’t tried this sooner. At some point or other, I’ve tried most all of the other OTC brands. The tin note is attention grabbing, yet hard to define. Smoking it I can taste nice Burley with an occasional grassy Virginia note, as well as a chocolatey boozy taste that is not at all unpleasant. Lights and smokes well. My normal smoke is old Joe Krantz, and I like to dabble with English blends as well. I’m not at all a fan usually of aromatics. Sir Walter Raleigh aromatic is different. The topping/casing is very mild and plays second fiddle to the tobacco. I can easily see this being in my regular rotation, if not a daily go to smoke....Read More

This codger blend is easily an all day smoke. Burns cool and easily with few relights if any. Flavor that delivers to the bottom of the bowl. Easily obtained, reasonably priced, and have yet to be disappointed.

Since the introduction of VINEGAR to Sir Walter Raleigh Regular, Ive been searching for blends that will fulfill my simple burley needs. Prince Albert has made the rotation. I've ventured successfully to Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic. Eureka! It is delightful and close enough to its deceased brother/cousin, Sir Walter Raleigh Regular, that has fallen into Gehenna or Hades (which ever you prefer). The Aromatic lights easily and certainly has most of the components of the regular. It is not a sickening sweet smell, or floral escape, or enough additives that you start searching for the tobacco. If you are lamenting the fall of the Regular, grab the Aromatic....I'm pretty sure you will agree with me....Read More
