About This Pipe Tobacco
Charing Cross from G. L. Pease is a traditional Balkan style blend of fine Virginia leaf, richly seasoned with smoky Cyprian Latakia, and spiced with the exquisite and exotic tobaccos of the orient. This is the one for Latakia lovers. Hints of roasted cocoa beans, orange zest, green pepper and campfires. This is the big one - fuller than Blackpoint, and a little less sweet.

Creamy, Incense-Like English That Rewards Patience

face,” it’s integrated into a thicker, weightier smoke. Where Pirate Kake can feel like breathing fog, Charing Cross feels more like dense, creamy smoke—richer and more deliberate. The Orientals show themselves nicely in the top notes, adding a subtle spice, while the Virginias linger and carry the finish.
Mouthfeel is where this blend really shines. It’s oily, rounded, and satisfying—more like slowly sipping a good cup of coffee than gulping water. Smoked slowly, it becomes downright magical: creamy, incense-like, and deeply aromatic. Smoked too fast, it turns sharp and ashy and loses its nuance, so it clearly rewards patience.
Nicotine strength is a steady medium—comforting rather than aggressive, with no head rush or wobble. This is a reflective blend that wants a slower cadence and some quiet attention. One of the most beautiful aspects has been the room note and after-aroma: smoking half a bowl, letting it rest overnight, then finishing it the next day produces a sweet, cathedral-like incense scent that fills the room. Something about the moisture and oils in the Latakia and Orientals creates a truly special aroma.
This has become a favorite for evening smokes, especially in cool, foggy Pacific Northwest weather. It’s perfect for sitting outdoors by a firepit, slowing down, and enjoying the retrohale.
Charing Cross isn’t a blunt Latakia hammer—it’s a thoughtful, well-balanced English that rewards patience and reflection. Highly recommended for smokers who enjoy depth, texture, and a slower pace....Read More

n option. Another good option was Hearth & Home Daybreak, but it was discontinued. I have some tins of FM stockpiled but I know they won’t last forever, so I’ve been searching for something to replace it. I tried some of Peterson’s English mixtures, but they all caused me the telltale signs of too much nicotine: mild nausea and dizziness and elevated heartrate. I came across the G.L. Pease English mixtures and tried several of them when they were on sale. Many of them seem quite low in nicotine and do not have the negative effects of nausea and dizziness I get with most tobaccos.
My favorite G.L. Pease English tobacco blend is Charing Cross. It has a pleasant spicy flavor with a mild pepperiness that I really like, but is not overpowering like some Balkan blends can be. I find that I actually like this better than Frog Morton. I don’t detect any toppings or other flavorings, just the flavor from the different tobaccos used in the blend. I found the moisture about perfect in the 2 oz and 8 oz tins I have tried, and did not notice that it contained humectants as stated in other reviews. I am going to stock up on some tins of this while they are available. If you’re searching for a low nicotine English tobacco blend I highly recommend you give Charing Cross a try....Read More

Good flavors, too much humectant

rible idea, at least in my humble opinion. It changes all the characteristics of the leaf: the way it ages, the way it packs, the way it burns, the way it tastes, and the way it smells both in the tin and in the bowl. I hate it that all the big production companies are doing this now. It seems the last holdouts still doing traditional packing in most of their stuff (for now) are Rattrays, Peterson, and both Gawith companies- thank God for European purity laws. Even McConnell has gone the synthetic humectant route, and Mac Baren has been bad for a while. I'm so disappointed. I have a whole cellar of 3-5 year tins I've been waiting to enjoy, pounds and pounds, and it's looking like at least half will be nasty because someone thought glycols were a good idea. What a waste. This is so depressing. I could almost give up pipe smoking over this. I'm giving serious consideration to never buying production brands again. This really upsets me....Read More

erve as the base and provide support from background. Smoke is very soft and almost creamy. Everything in balance and without doubt work exactly as master blender intended.
Problem lies with me. Going through different oriental blends I noticed that I usually enjoy interplay between Virginias and Orientals as a front stage contrary to lone Orientals taking that place. In this particular blend Orientals rule the ball. My palate demands more interplay with red/dark Virginias and more sweetness.
Therefore even though it is truly a great blend it is not my blend. May buy it again once in the blue moon when in the mood for the true Oriental Balkan....Read More
