Celephaïs is beautiful!
September 30, 2019
Product: Cornell & Diehl Visions of Celephaïs 2oz
Upon opening the Tin you are first greeted with pleasant grape scent. I ordered a fresh tin, and found it dry enough to smoke after letting sit for about 45 minutes. My first puff was a blast of flavor, sweet, and spicy with a strong grape aftertaste... Read More
, the virginias were mild, but the Dark Fired Leaf and Kasturi gives it a fantastic bit of spice and a great room note!
It burns very cool for a fresh aromatic, and I didnt have to relight it once. As I burn through my bowl I find it gets a bit more spicy the more I smoke it. The taste remains pleasant from start to finish. This is by far the best aromatic I've ever had. (Though may it be noted, I'm not typically an aromatic smoker.)
Although the taste is pleasant I could best compare it to a grape swisher sweet, with a bit more spice. Ultimately this leaves me feeling as though a 3 is as high as I can rate it.
*UPDATE* After just 3 days of jarring it, I went back. Another chap in the reviews recomend dedicating a pipe to it. I decided to use a Missouri Meerschaum Cherrywood, that had been seldom used. The swisher sweet taste was totally gone. It was much more spice, and sweetness with the grape taste being mild in the background. A very enjoyable smoke! It's such a unique aromatic that its hard to describe, all I can say is pick up a tin and try it! (Upping my review to 3.5) Will update after 1 month of aging.
Lastly, The Tin is a solid Ten! Love the art, very lovecraftian. As a fan I am happy to have this in my tobacco on my shelf.....................................................................................
*years later*
This tobacco ages more dramatically than anything in my collection, years down the road and it's a very complex mix of spicy, nutty, and sweet with little being recognizable with its earlier flavour profile. It's almost got a mild buttery tone to it, but it's good, very good. Grape is almost entirely gone, but still mild in the background of various other flavors. Certainly an interesting tobacco to jar up and taste periodically as the flavor evolves more dramatically than most.

antly bought a tin simply to complete my favorite series. Much to my surprise I found this extremely enjoyable. As others have noted, the topping is not too heavy-handed or sweet. It's reminiscent of a ruby port (Wine of Pnoth?) -- certainly more grape flavor than the raisin you get from a tawny port. Definitely a dessert smoke with an aroma akin to fine incense (I mean this in a good way) . Very decadent. Those who enjoy flavored hookah tobacco will absolutely love this. Burns evenly with little effort. It's not something I'd smoke every day, or even every week, but I'm glad to have it in my cellar as an unique option for those odd moods where I crave something truly unique, ...or when I want to be transported to the mythic Dreamlands so eloquently described in the works of HP. An interesting blend that brings heavy notes of grape with a nice and smokey backing. Another hit in the Old Ones lineup.

With the more negative reviews, I was a bit concerned I may not like this. A very pleasant smoke. The "grape" is not overwhelming, its more like something infused in wine. If you like that you'll like this. 4.5 stars.

r and perique dancing around the fire of the madness of the blend. Days later attempted again and the grape calmed itself down and was almost like a Primativo wine note (to me which is a raw version of red wine, not quite finished) with cigar leaf and dark fired playing the drums while the cavendish danced around and brought some soothing tones to the madness. This blend is wild; its is almost a fever dream that after about halfway turns into a stout blend with the wine flavor dissipating and the tobacco sobering up and being present.
This blend is out there. I have never wanted to try grape infused tobacco, but in this style (which replaces my late afternoon navy blend smoke) it finds it's niche and definitely drums up madness before soothing the end of the day Read Less

i've explored with abandon since my start.
Not a bad problem to have, in the grand scheme of things, so perhaps worry was too strong a word, but I had begun to wonder if my palate was either hopelessly indiscriminate, or simply not yet adjusted to the endless nuances of pipe tobacco. In stepped C&D's Visions to allay my concerns. Admittedly purchased for aesthetics and literary allusions alone, the tin note was the first troubling sign. Have you ever been curious what aroma would result, were you to soak grape-flavored White Owls in Welch's grape juice for a year, and then leave those soggy stogs out to dry? Of course you haven't, but a tin of this will surely help you if you now find yourself intrigued but want to skip the mess.
I'll admit, I did not do research of kasturi before purchasing, and perhaps that's the culprit of the unpleasant smoking experience which followed.
The bowl did not taste like a grape-soak blunt, and I'm still debating on whether or not this was a turn of fortune. What i did get was an incense & floral bomb which combined to create an overall taste akin to how i'd imagine a badly perfumed bar of soap to be received by the palate. I'll admit, the bowl burned well, until i dumped it out 5 minutes in. Glad I smoked it in a cob, bc I'm considering just giving the pipe a toss along with the remainder of the tobacco.
This stuff is absolutely terrible, but so bizarre that I can also imagine it being some other oddball's favorite. Certainly not for me or my apparently discriminating palate. Read Less

tucky pretty noticeable as the recurring stabilizing taste. I found myself thinking of Holst's "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity." Also images of the Ghost of Christmas Present (the one who has the poor with him.) A really weirdly enjoyable smoke but you'd have to be in the mood for something very different. I agree with others' about the banal reek of stale cigar this leaves in my clothes. The grape, to me, isn't like the grape bubble gum flavor I found in VS Sweet Bourbon Cigars; those have an artificial grape taste that's different from the more natural but still strong flavor of this stuff.
