ll smoke is alike in memory. Smooth, bready, with a wonderful peppered stake that builds mid smoke down. I notice a stronger nic hit as the pepper kicks in. Probably coincidence. I used to think this came too dry until I noticed the very fine oil left on my fingers after packing. I would recommend smoking this as is with no dry time (or increased humidity), in a Virginia friendly pipe, and with moderately pressured packing. Too loose and it loses flavor; too tight and it seems a bit bitter. Read Less

a unique flavor and aroma. It’s pleasant and I will update my review as I smoke more. This is based on a first try from a freshly opened tin dated 4/11/19 and purchased at Stag in Albuquerque.
Update: overnight humidifying in the tin with a moisturizing button improved the tin note but made it harder to light. Evidently, it’s moist enough in spite of feeling dry to the touch. Flavor and aroma were unchanged. Still stayed lit well. It has good strength and gets sweeter towards the bottom of the bowl. Finishes clean with no excess moisture.
Update: Would recommend a deep bowl, large pipe like a 616 Savinelli. Thick walls help keep it cool and the deep bowl allows the flavor to develop as it becomes sweeter towards the bottom of the bowl. For me, it likes to be sipped and not puffed. Still enjoyable but after a dozen bowls I’m convinced that it’s a pretty strong smoke that needs to be enjoyed slowly. I ordered more and read the history of it...pretty interesting. Read Less

nally, I was giving it a very light and quick rub and load my pipe with medium pressure, although I'm finding I like it more when I just load my pipe with zero manipulation of the tobacco. It takes a few lights to get it started but once it takes the flame, I had very few relights. Will you like this blend? If you are a big fan of dark fired tobaccos and enjoy some strength in both nicotine and body then I'm fairly certain you will enjoy Sansepolcro. As a lover of all types of dark fired I enjoyed this blend from the start, but I'm enjoying it more and more with each passing bowl. It seems like an acquired taste almost. I understand this is why people usually don't review tobaccos without smoking a tin first, as often a handful of bowls isn't enough to truly taste and understand a blend, and for me this rings true with Sansepolcro also. Finding that sweet spot for packing density and pipe used has opened up new flavors for me, and I now get the cloves aroma mentioned in the description, though mainly in the retrohale. The dark fired within shares many similarities with american DF, but it is indeed unique, and in my opinion maybe a little more mild and agreeable as an all day smoke (as I have been with this blend). The dark fired doesn't completely dominate the blend. Starting out you can really taste the rich virginia flavors, and just a hint of dark fired spice. As the bowl develops, that spice builds in strengt, ending with a crescendo of flavor and strength that I've come to quite enjoy. If you like medium/strong blends and dark fired then do yourself a favor and pick up a tin, or if you enjoy an occasional smoke that has spice and strength. However, if ur looking complexity this isn't it. Imo. There are subtleties to the spice but that's where it ends for me. Read Less

ind English-made tobaccos. The clove flavor is there, but not at all like you find in GH's Conniston or Bosun Cut Plugs. The one caveat for me was that I was hoping for some black Cavendish (per the ingredient list). There was no discernible amount of it; just a few tiny flecks in a whole tin. Some B.C. of the unsweetened variety would've rounded-out those 'rough edges' a bit and given it a more cohesive flavor profile (more like some of those elusive English brands' offerings). Not an all-day smoke, rather one to savor. Functionally, I found it works best in wide-chambered pipes. as the little leaves unfurl with a vengeance as they catch an ember. Sansepolcro is a very solid entry into C&D's Small Batch category, it's just not my all-time favorite. I am looking forward to opening the other tin I bought several years from now. d had a very odd ribbon type cut with small pieces of cigar leaf recognizable here and there. From the very beginning, it was sour and spicy (and dry) on my tongue. The spice, I’m sure is coming from the Italian Virginia florets. It’s not a Perique type of spiciness but more of a black pepper kind of spiciness. I just couldn’t get past it and it just built up on my tongue. If it was a bit lighter to me, it would have added a nice complexity. As it was, there was just too much of it. The Kentucky and the USA Virginias were always recognizable and pleasant but, to me, were too far in the background. It stayed dry in the bowl and burnt to a clean ash with no mechanical problems at all. I think that after a few weeks, the spiciness may tone down a bit and make it easier to smoke. If not, I can always blend it with a mild Va/Per like Orlik Golden Sliced to give the Orlik a bit of complexity. The unusualness of the blend alone gave me the impetus to give it three stars instead of two. Read Less

ints of "spice". Definitely a dark fired leaf. Though it's blonde appearance wouldn't lead you to believe that.
On the fuller side. Gets quite robust near the end of the bowl, but never overwhelming.
Tin note is earthy, and I mean exactly that - smells like, well, dirt. Very simple aroma in-fired. Leaf itself is lovely and packs nicely.
Smokes dry, cool and quite easy. Burns all the way down to a nice fine white/silver ash. Ever so slightly sweet to the palate, with subtle hints of spice, grass, and floral notes.
Near the end I get the hiccups (As I do with all dark fired), fairly nice Vitamin N hit, but not at all overwhelming.
I think, had that added a bit of a more floral/spiced oriental leaf it would've enhanced the flavor a great deal.
A very toned down version of the Italian cheroots these are based off of.
In many respects this reminded me a lot of Semois, a tad milder, with a more pleasant room note and aroma. It's very dry, and smokes as such - but even being a prodigious puffer, doesn't over-heat on me. I wouldn't call it "Strong" but it isn't "mild" either. For those that are sensitive to nicotine, or stronger blends I'd advise a small bowl. I've enjoyed this anytime of the day, but most of all mid-day early evening - when I need a "boost". Leaves a nice room note behind, even non-smokers wouldn't be too offended. Nice clean finish on the palate, with a very pleasant after effect.
Do not let the description fool you. This is by no means at all an aromatic, nor would I call this a "Virginia". In the same family, yes, but it's a quite distant cousin. What flavors are there, are natural qualities of the leaf. It's quite good. I plan on buying a few more tins before it's gone. I plan on adding some blending oriental to some and see how that goes.
C&D and I haven't melded. I've yet to find a blend of theirs that I "loved", but this is one of the few I've personally found that I'd order again. Has some of the classic VA flavor I love, and enough of a change to keep me interested. Read Less

And gratify, Sansepolcro did. With its tin note of a fresh crusty baguette and the slightest aroma of coffee, I imagined I was enjoying breakfast overlooking a Tuscan landscape.
