About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Bob's Chocolate Flake is among the pinnacle of Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s production: a distinct mixture that combines Latakia with Virginias from Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Malawi and a touch of Malawi Burley, all cased with a subtle cocoa aroma and flavored with chocolate and vanilla. The blending house is particularly lauded for their flake tobaccos, which are still produced using machinery from the 1790s and with production patents from the late 1800s. Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s only production change in the last 100 years involved transitioning from coal-fired to gas-operated tobacco presses, and their flakes are pressed for nearly a month before being sliced and tinned, personifying traditional pipe tobaccos at their best.

Cool-Smoking & Indulgent

First of all, for the Philistines that think they're dunking on this blend by giving it one star because it has Lakeland essence -- of course it has Lakeland essence, it is GH&C. Let's get one thing straight: one star is for either a blend that is obviously comprised of lugs / grade C leaf only, or Captain Black Grape. Whether Lakeland is your cup of grog or not, GH&C leaf choice is unimpeachable. Don't believe me? Let it sit in a mason jar untouched for five years and come back to flakes absolutely coated in sugar crystals. Giving this blend one star is like ripping a flier for guitar lessons off a telephone pole and shouting "I DON'T WANT GUITAR LESSONS!". That being said, I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions, however misguided they may be. At least this isn't as bad as the people who review bomb Sun Bear because they don't understand how supply and demand works. BCF is mechanically a great smoke, staying cool and burning slowly with proper pacing. Let it dry for 30-45 minutes before you pack it. It's a smoke best served as dessert. A slow retrohale is the key to taking in all the flavors and complexities of this blend. I knocked off half a star for GH&C being a little inconsistent with the amount of chocolate topping they apply from batch to batch....Read More
Better Than Expected

I have been exploring Lakeland blends for the last couple months, specifically ones with the “essence “ added to it. They seem to be love or hate, and I love them. After reading a lot about this blend and watching reviews online I was confident I’d like it and did something I’ve never done before, I bought 8oz on a blind buy. They arrived in perfect flakes like the ones in the photo and are longer than typical flakes. Fit perfectly in the 36oz mason jar I put them in. Tin note was a chocolate explosion, which I loved and thought wouldn’t be as strong based off some reviews. Rubbed out half a flake and put it in my dedicated Lakeland pipe, a MM Emerald, last night and it was even better than I expected. Didnt even give it any dry time. Didn’t require the amount of relights for me that the SG/GH blends typically require and I got a nice cocoa and vanilla flavor from the smoke with just the slightest Lakeland essence, which I think is a great combination. This will be a staple in my cellar for as long as I can get it....Read More
Utterly Unique

One of the most unique tobaccos currently being produced. An aromatic? Sure, sort of: but not an American-style one and also far less scented than G&H's other aromatic brands like Ennerdale. The natural scent that is applied here is not candy-like chocolate, but more like dark coco powder with 8% smoky latakia for contrast. The Malawi sun cured leaf also adds a sweet and rich cigar-like quality to produce an exquisitely tasty flake in the Old World tradition. There is a reason this tobacco is a cult favorite for discriminating pipe smokers everywhere....Read More
I can see the appeal

Finally picked some up after hearing so much praise for this blend. It's a wonderful english mix, with enough Latakia to be noticed. Chocolate is there, but I wouldn't describe this as a full on aromatic. One of the longest, coolest smokes I've ever had. The key is preparation. I'm sure there will be many opinions, but here is what I did. First, I rubbed it out into ribbons. The flake has already done its job, so now's the time to make it smokeable. I let the ribbons air out on a paper towel for 15 mins, and put them in a meershaum pipe. This was before dinner. Later in the evening, I took the prepared pipe, made a couple of charring lights. You're essentially creating a layer of charcoal at this stage. I let it rest for a minute, then went in for the full light. Burned long and beautifully with a couple of re-lights. Treat this blend as an event, not a stuff and smoke, and you will be rewarded....Read More
I see why it’s so popular

Smoking this in my grandfather’s medico pipe. Room note is bakers chocolate and the taste is a mild flavoring of cocoa and bakers chocolate. Occasionally you’ll taste the Latakia in the background and it ends well with the Virginian sweetness. A better way to describe it is Molè. Savory chocolate with some spicy and mellow sweetness. Delicious and pleasant. It does require some drying time because it burns hot in the bowl right out of the package....Read More
