The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Dark Bird's Eye is a bold mixture that showcases mature Virginias and Dark-Fired Kentucky for a rich flavor profile that highlights the varietals' natural essences. While Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has traditionally only offered shag-cut versions of their blends to the U.S. market, this Vintage Cut edition presents Dark Bird's Eye in a classic ribbon format.

Smooth. Not too sweet. Not too smoky. Not too much much flavor. Solid blend. Comes out a little wet, not really a need to dry it, as it doesn’t do much in terms of flavor, or burn. Pretty reliable. Not really any bite, even for a wet smoker, like me. Overall worth your time.

This one is growing on me...updated from 3.5★ to 4.0★.

I would recommend this; for trying an 'oz' or two. This one is better with the moisture left "as-is"; when received. I tried a couple of bowls after allowing it to dry some, from a handful of minutes for one bowl, to crispy dry for another; and it is better as-received. *Update*: after having more of it, and for not drying it prior to filling a bowl, this one is growing on me. So it is now a firm 4.0★....and is encroaching upon a 4.5★ with each bowl. This blend is definitely "Burley strong/dominant." But it comes with a tasty bit of sweetness in the first half of a bowl with the savory side of Burley in the second half. In the pouch, the smell reminds me of driving through the hills of Kentucky at that time of year when all the tobacco is curing in the barns, and smoking sheds. The Dark-fired Kentucky is unmistakable, but the Virginias are in no way subordinate to it. Kentucky and Virginia compliment each other. The nicotine level is respectable but not overpowering. Tongue bite should not be an issue, the room note is that classic pipe aroma that could never be mistaken for cigarettes or cigar. This was my first GH purchase. I have heard people talk about this "lakeland essence" but I guess I never paid close enough attention. If I had to summarize it: imagine bottling up the smell in a windowless room three days after an old man wearing too much cologne walked through.. like one of those old men at the gym who still uses powder on his parts. I really don't understand how this is even a thing, why are we always spraying complete garbage on tobacco rather than letting the leaf do the talking.
