About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s Dark Birds Eye is one of the oldest blends produced by Gawith. The blend features Dark Malawi and Indian leaf for a full, rich smoke where the strength of the Malawi leaf complements the smoothness of the sun-cured Dark Indian leaf. While Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has traditionally only offered ribbon versions of their blends to the U.S. market, this Vintage Cut edition presents Dark Bird's Eye in a classic format.

(*Update*...tobacco being two years aged now): This is now one of my favorites and is now a firm 5.0★ for me. This blend is definitely "Burley strong/dominant" and yet comes with a tasty hints, or wisps, of sweetness during the first half of a bowl; with the savory side of Burley more forward during the second half. I ordered 1/2 kilo (500 g), even before this update, for the blend growing on me between the original review and the update. (*Original Review*) I would recommend this; for trying an 'oz' or two. This one is better with the moisture left "as-is"; when received. I tried a couple of bowls after allowing it to dry some, from a handful of minutes for one bowl, to crispy dry for another; and it is better as-received....Read More

In the pouch, the smell reminds me of driving through the hills of Kentucky at that time of year when all the tobacco is curing in the barns, and smoking sheds. The Dark-fired Kentucky is unmistakable, but the Virginias are in no way subordinate to it. Kentucky and Virginia compliment each other. The nicotine level is respectable but not overpowering. Tongue bite should not be an issue, the room note is that classic pipe aroma that could never be mistaken for cigarettes or cigar. This was my first GH purchase. I have heard people talk about this "lakeland essence" but I guess I never paid close enough attention. If I had to summarize it: imagine bottling up the smell in a windowless room three days after an old man wearing too much cologne walked through.. like one of those old men at the gym who still uses powder on his parts. I really don't understand how this is even a thing, why are we always spraying complete garbage on tobacco rather than letting the leaf do the talking. Good strong smoke, not good enough to get over the old man. I gave what I had to someone who doesn't know better...Read More

Fed /watered the chickens - let them out, two flakes of hay and a quart of grain for the horse - let him out, milked the cow and need to filter and heat it... but first I'm going to take a break. This is strong but not too strong. It's perfect in a small billiard for a short break. The nicotine will sate your craving but won't make you sick. The KDF isn't American and so there's no spicy, charred oak-like nuance. It's an assertive type of burley that's stronger and has better mouthfeel without the tannic, walnut like flavor of burley. It has a wine and clove like thing going on. It's a smoother version than the American and pares really well with VA. It's not overbearing and it goes nicely with the natural sweetness of the VA tobaccos used. This is one I can smoke while on the go or between chores. Nicotine is 3.5 out of 5....Read More
